To me it is a very specific and direct explanation of what doesn't constitute news for a news site dedicated to Apple.

I think you'll have to tell us where you ceased to see constructive commentary in that post. As an added service, I can also demonstrate how words can be rearranged to be far less constructive.

And please, if we're going to go along with this farce and call this reporting, can we all remember that extant writings are still in a state of being? That's not too much to ask from a professional writer, right?

Lol the mr writers are professional writers?? They're me and you except they have a successful business and i make money off stocks. man it's funny .ppl trying to tell others how to make money....

They're professional because they're paid for their writing.

I wouldn't accuse the current staff of being professional in the meritorious sense.

I agree with all the posts that lean towards this piece not being with the "traditional" genre of "reporting" that many of us old timers are accustomed to reading on this site.

this is ...

NOT interesting at all and NASCAR is LAME!!!

----------

I threw up a lil in my mouth when I came to MacRumors and saw NASCAR logo everywhere.

One of the longest threads here on Macrumors on one of the [edited] sports in history.

I guess someone here at Macrumors is a big Nascar fanboy.

----------

Or it could act the same as Lion. 4 fingers to left/right to switch back and forth between apps. That's efficient .. And fun :D

Wait what.... Do you even own a iPad?

Don't Buy!

A motor racing story. A Facebore story. An Apps story. No real computers then? Record profits ... enough cash to build a mountain to the moon and not a single state of the art computer. Look at the Buyers Guide folks. Top prices for 3 year old tech. It must cost FA to put a Mac Pro together these days.

I don't think I've seen such a long article for something so worthless. Nascar? Fat inbreds watching a flypast by Bomber Command ... eating a whole cadaver of some poor unfortunate, whilst their children get fed to the grinder of the predatory Army recruitment drones. Oh, and the noisy thing that goes round for a very long time. Pointless.

Baffles my mind that this post is on the front page.

Sadly this is what you get when Apple is making so much money from idiotic devotees paying top dollar for 3 year old tech that it feels no need to update its computers. No computers = MR looking for content; Verizon tariffs, some game for dopes getting ported over etc. If Apple could make the same monstrous profit with a G3 400 MHz processor they would. Apple computers are a joke now. Mac Pro? FFS! The price for that level of tech should be a crime.

Crap content is not Apple's fault. The other Mac sites were able to find relevant Apple related content to write about.

This weekend, he'll be covering the NASCAR Nationwide race live from the pit road at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Coverage of qualifying begins at 11AM Eastern on ESPN, with the race beginning at 2:30PM Eastern on ABC.

I sure hope there is another article deemed worthy of being put on the front page of MR this long US weekend to push this one down. NASCAR? Oh boy. It's great to see the iPad used in such a novel way but seeing NASCAR on the front page of MR makes me ill. What a 'sport'. Like professional wrestling is a 'sport'.

I'd rather see a story about how any random dentist uses the iPad in his/her practice.

Love what Apple products can do [my household is nothing by Apples, well - plus a few old Wintels here and there],,, along with any technology, when fresh thinking can open up not just new but unseen doors. With that said, however [as a few others have stated too], I find this "reporting" more of an advertisement than a rumor. Sorry jlgolsen - the iPad is great, my oldest son uses his iPad 2 for 90% of his engineering / calcuseless / physics classes - but IMHO, this is NOT reporting, but honestly really does have the feel of an infomercial.

In other news, my local library have started using iPads to help catalog books. Who cares? Do we really need an article for every time someone finds a use for the iPad?

That's the worst part. They actually suck-up for free. Day after day. And all they want in return is nothing.

This story? A free advertisement about a "contest" between a $5 pad of paper and a $500 tablet? How about a story that compares and contrasts the document and content creation abilities of a tablet verses a laptop? Speed, durability, precision, and the like. Things that actually matter to people who know what a computer should be capable of.

Good luck holding and entering data into a laptop while standing up.

This is more a feature than a news story - I think that's the core issue here.

I've been coming to this site for a very long time, and read about some exciting rumours as well as some real stinkers. But you know what you're getting with rumours and that's always been cool by me.

I've come back pretty much every day over the last 8 or so years - and I have to say this is the only time I've been disappointed by a front page story.

I know the site has been drifting away from Mac rumours since the iPod took off, but this article is miles away from Rumors territory now, too.

If this is the direction the site is heading, perhaps a rebrand - or at least some sort of announcement - would help people get to grips with that? Dropping a feature like this onto the front page is just too jarring in isolation.

I think a majority of the criticism comes from users who do not like nor understand NASCAR. I think the basis for the article is fine, but I agree that it's not FP worthy.

I'll admit, all I know about NASCAR is that it is racing and it was on a South Park episode once. But an article about them using iPads instead of paper is total trash, not at all MacRumors worthy. I couldn't care less whether NASCAR is classed as a real sport or not, an article, never mind a front page article, about them using an iPad is a total waste of Internet data.

I think people are just surprised this made the front page, rather than the iOS Blog where this sort of thing might usually go, since it really has nothing to do with Apple, or rumors.

I'm not going to rip the article or topic, but I do agree with this. I'm fine with this the article as written. I'm just surprised it's on the Front Page as it's a bit bloggy and niche for my tastes.

Looking at the FAQ:
The Front Page is for the news and rumors that the editors think will have the most widespread interest. Stories of less importance or interest or that have fewer supporting details are posted on one of the blog tabs.
My personal opinion would be to classify this as a story of less importance and less interest. I understand that this is purely subjective and probably does't matter though.

From the original topic:
I was at the Iowa race anyway and saw Dave using the iPad, struck up a conversation and this story was the result. But yeah, you're right. We simply don't have the budget to send reporters out into the field to write stories about things like this.

That said, we both had a lot of fun with it and I hope to continue it as a bit of a series -- interesting folks using iPads in interesting ways. Pitches welcome: jlgolson@macrumors.com

So, that explains that. I guess we have more of these sorts of news stories to look forward to. I don't really mind, personally, but it would be nice if they were put on the iOS Blog instead of the Front Page where we expect stuff Apple- and rumor-related.

Or perhaps MacRumors might want to start a new page on the site for features?
