How am I wrong when Steam dose not have all the games made for Mac.. Until Steam has all the that are for Mac then Steam will be a joke for the Mac.. Also you can get them games from other places other then Mac App Store.. Steam only works if they have the games for the Mac and as of right now there is only a hand full of good games on Steam but it still to limited when it come to Mac games..

So again I am not worng because them games ARE NOT ON STEAM FOR THE MAC

You are wrong because you are using specific games that aren't on Steam as your example as to why Steam is a joke, but you completely missed the part where Steam has way more features for developers and still has more games than the MAS (ones that aren't just Angry Birds and the like). I specifically mentioned 9 very popular games that are not even available on the MAS. Out of the ones I listed the only one available on the MAS is Braid.

So maybe the MAS is the one that is the joke? Plus it doesn't have any of the features I mentioned. Where is the integrated server browser for multiplayer games? Or a friends list so you can see what your friends are playing and chat with them (including full social profiles to see what your friends are up to)? Or achievements? Or the automatic syncing of save games (and keyboard mappings) to the cloud so that if you need to reinstall them you won't need to back them up? Or how about cross platform compatibly so you can play multiplayer games with your PC friends?

No, I am sorry but the MAS is the one that is a joke for gaming. Sure it has BioShock and a couple other games that aren't on Steam, but the lack of a couple games does not make Steam a joke. The fact remains that the MAS will never get most of the games I mentioned because they either make use of Steamplay (for server browser support and such) or the developers believe that there is a lot more money to be made on Steam (which is true since it's cross platform!)

My problem with these games isn't the price. I'd be willing to pay $50 for Borderlands, as I found it worth it. Instead my problem is with the lack of announcement about the Mac versions until it's nearly ready. I bought and played Borderlands on Steam for Windows 6 months after it came out. At that time there was no sign of a Mac version.

If these Mac developers would establish better relationships with the original game developer, it would help a lot. Then things like SteamPlay might be used more often, and revenue splits could be set up based on the percentage that play on Windows vs OS X. Instead, they try to sell standalone versions limited to OS X only, months, or even years after the game first came out.

As much as I'd like to see OS X be a viable gaming platform, I'm not going to wait an unknown amount of time to see if a game is coming out.

This! Yes this is exactly why Steamplay is such a good thing for gaming, and why not using it is just screwing over gamers. There is so many people who are simply not going to bother buying certain games on the Mac because they don't want to repurchase them. It's so stupid that the developers that ported the game don't understand that. Okay so maybe they didn't have a choice, they could have gotten forced by the publisher anyway. Still, added value is how to appeal to gamers, they are already poor enough from buying games all the time, let alone having to buy the same game multiple times just to play it on the platform they want.

Dam Trolls

All it is, is price gauging for old games that are inferior cider ports. They aren't even native, just a windows exe in a wrapper with a performance loss. It's a joke. If people want games then they should just use Windows with DirectX which is built with games in mind, that way you get the wider range of titles with proper performance and driver support.

These games where more for the xbox but if you don't like them don't buy them. Price makes sense since they have to make it work with os x and no Troll not everyone is going to buy or build a PC just for games.

Those prices are a total joke.

Here are the prices on steam:

Bioshock: $19.99
Borderlands GOTY: $29.99
Rome Total War Gold: $9.99
Lego Harry Potter: $29.99 (not 100% sure if this is the exact same title though)

I hope nobody buys these overpriced ripoffs and waits for them to at least equal the steam price!

Ruahrc

Steam offers only Windows version of CoD, BioShock and Borderlands.

I bought CoD:4 from the official website for £39.00, on the App Store is £29.00 and there isn't on steam for Mac.

Borderlands is £30 on amazon as on the App Store and is going to realease tomorrow for the Mac.

It was old for Windows is new for the Mac; however, I would like to see those priced cheaper than that too.

I think you do not get it.. Steam for the Mac is a joke because it lacks games that I can buy else where not just on Mac App store but online or in a store.. Again Steam for MAC only has a SMALL amount of good games but that dose not make Steam is better just because it has some games.. It would not be a joke if Steam for the Mac had as many good games as PC then I be wrong but I am not.. It funny is you keep comparing Steam with Mac App Store where I am not.. I comparing Steam with what I can buy in the store on a self and Steam loses there and that why I think Steam for Mac is a joke.. Learn to read because I never said any thing about Mac App Store but All stores where you can buy games from..

Again I am not wrong and it is you that is wrong..

can you get Bioshock, Borderlands GOTY, Rome Total War Gold, Lego Harry Potter on Steam for Mac? No then I am right and you are wrong....

P.S. Why do you keep bring up Angry Birds and the like when I was not talking about them? You keep dancing around the games I am talking about and other real games..

While the Steam selection for OSX is hardly ideal, neither is the App Store's, so neither truly beats the other in that regard. I will purposely ignore off-the-shelf games, because as Apple itself believes (as do I to a certain extent), optical media are on the way out.

Steam outshines the App Store by a mile specifically for games because, as the poster you quoted rightly pointed out, it really is an "ecosystem" with it's many social features, Steamplay, etc. A concept that should be familiar to anyone who has purchased an Apple product.

And my last real issue with the App Store is, correct me if I'm wrong, that updates are not incremental. TF2 isn't on the App Store and never will be, but hypothetically if it were, I would need to re-download the game in it's entirety every time Valve added a new hat or something...

Games are available outside Steam because the distributors know they can maximise profits by selling to a smaller market at a higher profit.

So what if the same game is available in Steam for 50% of the price in the App Store? Most consumers don't know and will by from the App Store. It is not as if Mac users are price conscious / driven in the first place (apart from some here who know better, for example)

It makes sense to withhold titles from Steam while more profit can be derived through alternate channels. Steam know how to sell to gamers but Apple know how to sell to Mac users.

That is my point.. there are other places people can go that has more games then what is found on Steam for Mac..

Jesus Christ.
Shut the **** up.
I can't bear to hear any more of your ****.
Assassin's Creed 2 was on the shelves in Apple Retail stores a month before it came out for Mac on Steam. Odds are, the games that just came out on the MAS today will be out on Steam for Mac in a month, give or take some.
Nevertheless, it seems to me that you are certain that Steam's lack of five games makes it an inferior product to the MAS. You seem to have forgotten that Steam carries dozens of games for Mac with full support (chat, achievements, dedicated servers, playing with Windows users, etc) that the MAS currently lacks.
MAS is not built for gaming.
If I have to read another one of your posts, then I might have to strangle myself.

Wrong again. 90% of the Mac games available on Steam are not available in disc form. For the ones that are available in disc form, your paying 50% more money then you would be paying on Steam. (not to mention Steam Support which is free) I don't know about you, but I'm not made of money. Also, what kind of ****** buys games at Best Buy?

Get it on Steam! (When available) they are cheaper on holidays and other times of the year xD

And of course, with Steam Play all is better :D

Good day people!

They were more expensive on the Xbox, now they aren't worth even close to what their gouging for on the MAS. There is absolutly no reason these games need to be almost twice as expensive as their Steam counterparts.

I need to shut up.. I am not the one that keeps comparing Mac App Store with Steam.. Out of 160 games on Steam for the Mac only 6 or 8 games are any good compared to PC that has 30+ more good games... Also There are way more then 5 games that are not on Steam for Mac but your to blind to see that because you are a Steam fanboy... Again Until Steam for the Mac has more then 8 good games out of 160 and more closer to PC Steam it is a joke on the Mac.. Again Steam is not the only way to get digital copies of games for cheap... There are other sites that have more digital copies of games for Mac then on Steam.. Again I am not wrong, you are just keep digging yourself a hole when you keep comparing some thing that I am not even taking about.. Again I NEVER SAID ANY THING ABOUT MAC APP STORE. YOU ARE THE ONE THAT KEEPS BRING IT UP NOT ME... ..

With the Best buy I was making a point that you seem to not get..

P.S. I have a Steam account because I sign up when Steam was giving away Portal for free for the Mac.. So I know what I see and it not that good when it comes to "games".......

I believe the word you're looking for is "does". Also, how is steam for the mac a joke? It has only been out for about 8 months. Did you expect all those games to magically get ported to the Macintosh in a flash? Give me a break!

And for the record, Farrel doesn't use Cider. Cider is for lazy companies who don't want to spend the time, money, and resources to actually "natively port" a game to Mac OS X. Anyone can wrap a game in a wrapper and sell it. Cider makes games a piece crap with a freaking bow on it.

Yes if the game been out over 6 months to a year... When you can buy the games some where else. That funny seeing I own a game that was ported using Cider and it run the same way it ran on a good PC on my iMac at high settings... I have not had any problems running the game.. Not every game is crap just because it used Cider.. Maybe it is your mac that you run the game on that is the problem..

Slim: the Mac App Store does have a number of good games, yes, but Steam is superior as a game delivery service and platform. Feral has stated in the past that they won't put their games on Steam because then gamers would be able to get both the PC and Mac version for one price, and they weren't fond of that. Fair enough, but it's their fault and not Steam's for not having those games.

And I think people would tend to agree with him more than you. I have over twenty good games under OS X on Steam, and of those perhaps two are available on the Mac App Store.

The thing is that I am not comparing Steam with Mac App Store tho.. I am comparing Steam "games" to what is out on Disc and able for Digital copy else where that is not on Steam.. But I guess people are missing that part and think I am talking about Steam and Mac App Store and that where they are wrong...

I'm not going to get caught up in this whole Steam vs Mac App Store war (if I can help it), but I wonder why the developers are releasing Mac versions of games on the MAS when they are Windows only on Steam. Now there should be no reason why I have to boot into Windows 7 just to play BioShock anymore!

I think you are comparing Apples to Oranges. Some people don't like Steam and there are some problems with steam when you are off-line so you are going to see some difference between Steam and a stand-alone version. Steam titles require you to launch steam to play them so that could be a sticking point.

Plus the games his listed are not even able for Mac on Steam but are able in the Stores (I am saying stores and I am not talking about Mac App Store)..

Sure, you can stop repeating that now, because Steam is still a better distribution platform than any physical media and a better experience than any big-box store. Steam's selection may be a joke for now, but Steam itself as a platform, as an "ecosystem", is hardly a joke.

I thought this thread was about the Mac App Store, and extrapolated outwards, digital-delivery platforms.

Finally some one that sees that I was talking about the games and not the platform.. Also I take physical media first then Digital copy from other online stores.. I do not care about chat or online play.. I do not even use chat on Xbox Live and PSN why would I care for it on Steam..

Yes it is but I was not talking about Mac App Store or comparing it like others keep doing...I was talking about other ways people can get games that where not on Steam..

Feral have already said they won't be releasing on Steam, which they should, because apparently whatever platform the game is played on (Mac or Windows) decides who gets paid, at least that's what I read on Steam's forum from a developer or something.

Different priorities, fair enough.

In fact, more than one I opted to buy a physical copy of a game, even if it was just for the CD key to activate on Steam. Something about having boxes, I dunno.

Still for argument's sake, I feel Steam is unbeatable for now. More on-topic, the App Store has a long way to go in this regard.
