Pretty sure England was favorite going in? The betting odds favored them, I think
Depens who you ask. But Mexico were on home soil and had barely conceded any goals let alone lost prior to this game.

Maybe Tuchel can call DT to overturn Quansah's red

Someone on twitter suggested a different way to get to the playoffs:

Have the group stage winners advance automatically to the 1/8 finals, and have the runners-up play the first elimination round.

I thought there was merit to this idea, and broke it down with ChatGPT as follows:

- 12 winners of the group stages advance to the 1/8 finals (round of 16)
- 12 runners up do a second group stage, four groups of 3. The four winners advance to 1/8 finals

This way, there are only 12 games in the second round, and a total of 100 games exactly in the tournament. Winning the group stage is much more desirable for the first round as it offers a material benefit, and winning the second round is necessary.

No more of this calculating optimal paths to knockout rounds. And four less games make the tournament just a little more compact, although that may not be what FIFA and commerce want.

What does everybody think about that?

FIFA has embarrassed themselves again by allowing politics to sway their decision. Infantino has to go, after the FIFA peace prize I though it could not get any worst. How wrong I was.
Yup. Between the mexican fans' extreme poor sportsmanship (setting off fireworks outside England's hotel all night long), and this political BS, my new interest in futbol is pretty much evaporated now.

Personally, I devoutly hope that the US are thrashed, not just by Belgium, but by whoever they play.

Such interference is unwarranted, unjustified, and uncalled for.

It undermines the credibility and - of even greater significance - the integrity (and independence) of the competition, - and, also, serves to taint and tarnish the tournament, above all, for the hosts, as, notwithstanding their fine performance to date, questions inevitably will be asked about them - and the credibility of their achievements will be forever tainted and tarnished should they proceed any further in the competition.

Agreed. I hope the US gets utterly thrashed against Belgium. But you’ll understand I won’t be staying up for it!

To be clear: Whether it is or isn’t a red to Balogun is now irrelevant. Government interference is a violation of FIFA Article 2 & 15, and the punishment is disqualification and suspension.
Agreed. All of us that follow football (and know a lot more than the person saying it wasn’t a bad tackle) have seen decisions go against us. But you don’t pick up the phone to call the governing body.

Hopefully once the US are out that particular person will have less interest in the tournament and try to stop being the centre of attention. But I’m not sure he’s capable of that.

That's not gonna happen. this world cup's objective was to finally conquer the US market, which has been largely indifferent to the sport until now.

So far it seems this has been successful, they're not gonna ruin it by standing firm on Balogun's red.

There are enough layers of obfuscation to avoid disqualification of the US team. Infantino himself just said his call with Trump had nothing to do with the decision to overturn.

Sure. I believe every word.

In other news a surprise change in the VAR line up for the match, Trump has managed to clear his evening and will be making the decisions!
😝

Currently watching the Spain v Portugal match. I have no skin in the game so a lot more of a relaxed watch compared to last night.

What is also ironic about this is that Trump is trying his best to ban birthright citizenship. This is exactly why this player qualifies to play for the US. His Nigerian mother who has British citizenship happen to be on holiday in New York when he was born.

I died laughing when I learned that; you can't make this stuff up.

What were those Portuguese players doing deep into added on time. You need to get the ball INTO the box. No point pinging it about at the back. Not that Spain were too clever. A very average side.

Both teams were cautious, made for a dull game.

But the way Spain just clinically finished it in the last minute of regular time makes me suspect some of that was calculated on their part.

The assist was superb, the goal was delivered with cold, surgical precision. And they weren't even all that elated about it.

Makes me wonder if they had that in the bag the whole time and just waited for the last minute to crush Portugal's morale?

Although the reason behind this decision is obvious I feel it's the fair outcome in this very specific situation.
Do you have the expression "write right by bent lines" in English?
It is not about fairness, it is about integrity. This was not and will not be the only disputable red card. Will all other disputable cards at the tournament be suspended by FIFA for one year? French star player Olise received a controversial yellow card in the match v. Paraquay. Because it was his second overall, he is banned for the quarterfinals match v. Norway. The French soccer federation have appealed to FIFA to rescind the card. Will FIFA grant the request? Will Macron have to call Infantilo?

Exactly, and very well said; and an excellent observation.

This is an absolutely nauseating story, if true.
I joked about it with my son in the morning before the news broke. My jaw dropped when I found out it was true. DJT talked with Putin for 90 minutes yesterday as reported by MSN. He did not say, “Vladimir, you haven’t just slapped Ukrainians in the face, you killed and are still killing them. That is not fair. Will you at least suspend your aggression for one year?”
