I disagree, the US team did not deserve that. The interfering and scheming US Soccer organization did. FIFA did. Trump did.

But not these guys, they were not to blame.
Unfortunately the only outcome that could insure no further interference was the US exit. Was it the fault of the players? Absolutely not. But their further involvement would invalidate the competition further than it has been.

I don't share your optimism. As anyone could have predicted, he's made it all about himself, and it'll stay that way until he's figured out how to salvage a win from it.

The big question now is, how did this US team beat Paraguay when Germany couldn't and France needed a PK to advance?

I don't know if you generally watch football or not, but this is not unusual at all. There's tactical mismatching, some teams' strengths and style simply don't fit another team that may be objectively stronger. There's also the fact that better teams grow into the tournament as time passes so the weaker ones will usually peak early and fall off (this is why I still think Spain and Argentina are the favorites ahead of France).

Last but not least, being the underdog plays a big part as it influences not just tactics, but mentality, as well. There are teams who are incredibly hard to beat if you're objectively stronger than them and they have to dig in and survive, as some teams simply thrive in that setting, they feed off of being underestimated.

I'm saying all of this to say that Paraguay's games vs Germany and France have almost nothing to do with their game vs the USA. Completely different matchups in every sense.

I was very satisfied seeing the US being knocked out by a Belgium that has openly admitted to struggling of late. The controversy clearly gave them a huge boost as they played very well last night. I mean no disrespect to the US team btw, they were a passenger in all this, but their exit was justice for the outside interference. Infantino has to go and this whole debacle has overshadowed what I think has been a very strange World Cup. Has anybody else felt this tournament has lacked the atmosphere of previous ones or just me?

I have just about recovered from only having 3 hours sleep on Monday morning, watching England win against Mexico. I can't be doing any more 2am matches lol.

FIFA, IOC, ISU (International Skating Union since most here are not into that sport) need major overhauls and purges. 😡 Well at least the US is out. I am rooting for Switzerland against Columbia tonight though their star player, Johan Manzambi is out with an injury. Plus ii starts at 22:00 so doable.

Obviuously sucks for the US team to lose like that and be in the scandal, but I am finding the "Balogun honoured the red card by not playing" jokes very amusing

Scoreline was pretty accurate. USA and USMNT richly deserved that beatdown. What a horrendous performance all around.
We have a pretty poor record against Belgium, so I more or less expected this result. USA had a decent tournament and pretty much performed at par IMO. In another world without all the political nonsense I would be content with it.

Perfect summary of last night from the 🇺🇸 side of things

It is not about fairness, it is about integrity. This was not and will not be the only disputable red card. Will all other disputable cards at the tournament be suspended by FIFA for one year? French star player Olise received a controversial yellow card in the match v. Paraquay. Because it was his second overall, he is banned for the quarterfinals match v. Norway. The French soccer federation have appealed to FIFA to rescind the card. Will FIFA grant the request? Will Macron have to call Infantilo?
It is one thing for a team - a manager, a soccer federation in an international game - to appeal a red card; while regrettable, (as it serves to further undermine the authority of the match officials), it is still something that occurs within the orbit of the actual game and its administrators and ruling bodies.

However, it is quite another thing for a powerful political leader of the host country to wade into such a matter, and it is completely unacceptable, unnecessary, unwarranted, as it is nothing more than flagrant interference and a desire to influence the outcomes of games.

Very happy that the US was knocked out. If they had advanced the controversy surrounding the meddling would have run and run.
Completely agree; delighted to see the US knocked out.

As a result of this (the decision to rescind - or suspend - the sanction - a one game ban - attached to the red card as a result of improper influence), I didn't just wish to see the US defeated: I wished to see them thrashed.
The US should be banned from holding tournaments in my opinion. If they can’t abide by the rules you don’t deserve to be able to hold them.
An excellent idea and one I am in whole-hearted agreement with.
Unfortunately the only outcome that could insure no further interference was the US exit.
Totally concur.
Was it the fault of the players? Absolutely not. But their further involvement would invalidate the competition further than it has been.
Absolutely true and very well said.

Damn straight. The way we treated the teams and fans from the Middle East and Africa😞... The team from Senegal detained for hours at the airport. Thousands of fans from Iraq forced to return home. The Iranian national team forced to go back to Mexico immediately after the match instead of being allowed to relax. There are many other instances.

Bullying FIFA to rescind the 🟥 card didn't help.😩

I ain't a saint, but if I ever treated guests at my house this way, the family would disown me in a heartbeat. You don't treat invited guests as criminals.

Pochettino the manager is tainted with the stank now. He had the chance to do the right thing and didn't

I think you overestimate the power of his position.

If the US Soccer organization (the guys who pay his salary) lobby the FIFA who overturns the decision, and the friggin’ POTUS brags about making it happen, you think he has a choice in the matter?
