Well I am rooting for Canada though I think Belgium will win this. Too bad about the missed penalty (a wide shot) I must confess I know nothing about Canadian football currently.
@decafjava: While I sympathise with Canada, - they deserved better, and certainly deserved a draw - I cannot understand how any team that qualifies for the World Cup has not practiced penalties (endlessly) and become proficient in - and comfortable with - taking penalties.

This is too important a skill to leave to chance.

A team will rarely be gifted a better opportunity to score, than as a consequence of a penalty that they have been awarded.

@yaxomoxay: I will never forget the sight - the spectacle - of Roberto Baggio blazing the ball over the bar and sending it into the stratosphere during the penalty shoot-out following Italy's appearance in the World Cup Final in - yes, 1994, I believe.

Canada is a darn good team. The class of Concacaf...though, considering the other three teams have managed a pair of points, that may not be saying much. I'm very much looking forward to this game.

I would say the US and Mexico are the class of Concacaf.

Yes. 1994 vs Brazil. It still hurts a lot for some reason, probably because Baggio is a decent man. I loved watching that man play, in real life or on TV. By the way, there’s a pretty decent movie about him on Netflix if you want to check it out.

After he got screwed in 1998 when he was promised to play the World Cup if he pulled an impossible miracle (which he did) just to find out they lied to him, he retired. He’s now a farmer, he’s very private and he just wants to live his life driving his beloved Fiat Panda. This is him at work:

1994 still hurts because the two best players, Baggio and Baresi, missed the penalties, and those two are amongst the few Italian players that are respected by almost every football fan in Italy, probably because of their character, they were talented, correct and unassuming, on and off the field, I remember Baggio playing while injured, at some point he couldn't even bend his right leg, it also hurts because many think that we could have easily beaten Brazil; penalty shootouts are a strange beast, "it's the rules" when you win, even if you still hate them, and "it's not fair" when you lose.

But Baggio did play during the 1998 World Cup, I think he was not a starter because Italy had Del Piero at his peak, but he played, and scored more goals (2) than Del Piero (0) - curiously, Del Piero was never able in his career to replicate his performances with Juventus with the National team, it was like you were watching two different players -, and Baggio didn't retire after the World Cup, he still wanted to play for the National team but he wasn't called up for Euro 2000 and for the 2002 World Cup because, according to Trapattoni, he wasn't in shape after yet another knee injury - it's for the 2002 World Cup that Trapattoni said that if Baggio could have healed from his injury and perform well with Brescia he would have called him up, but he didn't call him up, notwithstanding his great performances towards the end of the season -, even though he was playing for Brescia, scoring goals while being the leader of his team. He kept playing until 2004 when he retired.

He always had a plethora of injuries and surgeries, he's so banged up that, I read in an interview, his knees are so bad he can't even play soccer with his grandchildren, he can't even take long walks; and sometimes coaches didn't like him because they didn't know how to use his skills in a football that was tactics first and talent second.

He was an amazing player, probably the best Italian player of all time - some say Valentino Mazzola was better than Baggio, even if Mazzola's career was cut short by the Grande Torino's plane crash, but there are only a few films of Valentino Mazzola, so I don't really know -; had Baggio had less injuries we would be talking about one of the best in football's history, like with Ronaldo - Brazilian Ronaldo, the strongest player I've ever seen playing, a real monster, but, again, I was a baby when Maradona was at his peak - they both had their enormous talent tainted by way too many injuries.

I remember I had Baggio's life size poster in my room - I was a child and he looked like a giant -, and was devasted when he left, especially because he went to Milan, for a while I thought about starting to support Milan because he was with them but, as we say here, you will change women, but you don't change your football team.

Ahh Roberto Baggio… the divine ponytail… now there was a player.

But I think Germany are not going to make it out of their group. I’d back Japan to win against Costa Rica, which leaves Germany needing a win against Spain, not guaranteed by any means. It looks like Spain and Japan might be the ones to go through.

What did you all think of that second goal by Japan though? It reminded me of Dennis Bergkamp’s famous goal in the Netherlands-Argentina game in the 1998 World Cup.

I think Germany's midfield and defense will have a hard time containing Spain, but they have good and fast attackers, they could try playing counterattack, trying to gain the ball, which is not easy against Spain, and then launching their fast and technically gifted attacking players, especially if Sané is back and healthy, him, Gnabry and Musiala can do a lot of damage to Spain's defense, if they'll try to play football against Spain they will lose, but the whole team will need to bring its A-game for the whole match, and Rudiger shouldn't think he's head and shoulders above everybody else.

They could watch films of the teams that managed to beat Guardiola's Barcelona, they all played like that, defense, intelligently outrun them, gain the ball, launch fast attacking players, score.

Germany definitely underestimated Japan, they almost wanted to toy with them in the first half, they'll need way more pragmatism against Spain.

Hopp Schwiiz!*

Good show by Cameroun who had several opportunities but the Swiss kept their lead.

*Go Switzerland in Swiss German - even the French speakers use this phrase.

You’re right, it was 2002. 1998 was the whole Del Piero/Baggio thing. I still think that after his performance with Brescia, he should’ve been called up especially considering how bad Italy played that year. The only good thing out of that debacle is that with Baggio playing for Brescia, we got one of the most memorable off field performances:

As for Baresi, as a lifelong AC Milan fan he was my hero. I had several posters of him in my room (and when Baggio played for us I had one of him), however for some reason his penalty hurts less. If you remember Baresi also got seriously injured early in the tournament but was able to recover at record speed.I had the pleasure to talk to him a few times, he was always cordial.

As for Baggio I do understand the feeling. I assume you’re a Juventus fan. When he moved to AC Milan I got more expensive season tickets just to watch him better. Then he went to Bologna for a bit but, worse, then he played for Inter. I hate Inter. I can’t stand Inter. And yet, whenever he scored for them or made a good play I was somewhat happy. Go figure.

I can't wait for the next two matches, what I am more excited about today's games.

So far Saudi Arabia is kinda surprise. Also Japan was always a good team so no wonder they could win. Also in my opinion top teams like Germany and Argentina should be more devoted to the game and spend more time training and preparing and not be too careless

Yes, Juventus fan here, naturally I despise Inter Milan, but Roberto Baggio is one of those players that if you like football, or just value classy people, you just can’t hate, no matter where he plays.
