Anyone have any first hands experience yet?

Yep.

Thanks for the pic, SonicJay. That's a clue to the price drop, for sure:) Kinda glad I have 1&2. I actually have used the Bibles, both for Logic and FCP. Lots of excellent info, but certainly NOT the way to learn the program.

Kinda sad actually....I dug the "Hard Copy"....not so fond of PDFs.

Mine arrives tomorrow. Have you installed yet? Are you going from FCS1 to 3 or were your running 2? Anyone else have actual user experience yet? I'm a bit nervous to install right away, I have a couple of projects to wrap up first before the leap. Interested if anyone is having issues or if all looks good.

Where did you see that printed?
Regarding FCP 7 using only 2 cores for RT (on Leopard), this info was from a call to FCP tech support. Would love to be wrong, though.:)

The Macworld review for FC 7 had this line; "While Apple states that there will be performance benefits from running Snow Leopard with Final Cut Pro 7, no new features are enabled by running it". I couldn't find that information any other place, like in an Apple document. Anyway, those benefits may be use of grand central and OpenCL, along with 64-bit capabilities.
I hope this turns out to be the case.

PVC Review here

Finally a more 'raw' review. Since discovering the lack of 64-bit, the only real draw for me towards the new version was the new render management. Thats been shot down. Cancel the order and wait for Apple to wake up and produce a worthwhile update.

No prob. I just installed it last night; it was getting really late, so I didn't have time to try it out, but I will tonight. I went from 1 to 3. I'll try pulling in a few older projects to see how that goes.

Abandoned? No. Put on the back-burner? Yes.

Lethal

Agreed. It's been 2 years and all that's been done to the suite is a few minor changes. They've missed some key developments such as 64-bit processing, the homogenizing of the Color UI to fit the rest of the suite, native 4k and .r3d editing, and real Blu-Ray authoring. By now these features would have been expected. It is arguable that Apple has simple released a few point updates, and this does not merit a "new" version of any of the apps. In fact, Apple themselves are a little confused about this, and seem to have had some trouble in the naming of the suite (hence 2+ vs. 3).

While it's still a pro-app release, it's certainly a lot less than the pros were expecting.

I believe Apple's playing it conservatively here. They probably need to handle this transition well.

1. Get people off of PPC
2. Fix the internals to align with the objectives of Snow Leopard and subsequent OS.
3. Fix long standing bugs and issues.
4. Minimize UI changes for now.

Now we simply need to let Snow Leopard mature and reach the type of polish that it needs to host Pro apps like FCS, LS and Aperture without issue.

Wow, that box really is slot smaller!

By doing this apple is shaving quite a large cost associated with printing and shipping! I almost have enough money for my pro and this suite! I can finally say goodbye to express and my dads iMac and sisters MacBook!

Has anyone installed yet? I got mine yesterday, both FCP and LP. A bit leary of installing now, but I did wrap up the post of two of my three projects last night. I have another wedding to shoot this weekend with a 4 week break between it and the next show.

I am REALLY itching to do the upgrade. I do have FCP(6) on my MBP if all goes bad, I suppose....I could edit the final wedding on my laptop:)

I think I am gonna install it tonight...LOL. What the heck, we only live once, right? (I always tell my clients the video production is a 4-8week turnaround during peak season, this will save me, I think....)

Anyone with experience on the new software yet? Any issues to be aware of? Or is it smooth sailing?

I would expect with 2 years of development and no major new features it should be pretty bug free! (I hope)

Incidently, went to the UK's flagship store on regents street and they havent even installed it on any of the computers yet! apart from their show computer... But I didn't get to have a go on that!

I installed it the night before last, and did one really short super basic project last night; worked beautifully, but I really didn't do much. Captured 2 hours of Mini-DV, a few cuts, a few audio ajdustments and a 3 way color correction, then tried the new Share (replaces Export using Compressor) to output for Apple TV, but didn't have time to watch the file on the TV

Have you posted it anywhere?

I'd be interested to have a look as I like seeing what other members have created. I have collated a list of films that Macrumors members have made which can be found in my sig...

Cluster workaround still necessary

I am still exploring a recently installed FCS3. What I have found is that I still need to export to a QT file from FCP then drop into Compressor if I want to use the Qmaster cluster on my Mac Pro. The direct 'send to Compressor' from FCP continues to fail when the job is submitted to the cluster. In addition, when I try to quit Final Cut Pro I get a further error message 'You cannot quit Final Cut Pro while rendering a job for Compressor'. I don't recall FCP 6 adding the error message and refusing to quit.

As I understand the reason you had to leave FCP to use the cluster in FCS2 was a licensing issue - Qmaster tries to invoke multiple instances of FCP and so looks for multiple licenses. So, not really a bug as such, however I had hoped that in FCS3 this might have been sorted out so that we could avoid the extra steps of producing a QT file and having to quit FCP.

Man this the one thing that pissed me off so bad when I got my 8-Core Mac Pro.

I think i'm gonna wait to they fix this bug before I upgrade again.

I might have to wait along time because apple considers this a unsupported feature not a bug. Wtf?

In FCS2, I never have to actually quit FCP (it can leave it open in the background) in order to render in Compressor using QMaster. But like everyone else, I still have the same issue with sending straight from FCP. So as annoying as it is, I've become accustomed to outputting QT files prior to setting up a render batch.

But the point is, FCP7 simply doesn't have enough compelling features that matter to me to run out and upgrade. I think I'll wait for the next release when Apple has something significant to put on the table.

Out of curiosity what big features could they bring to the table in terms of features (excluding support for AVCHD and stuff)

Well, for one, a properly 64-bit, multicore aware app so we can all render faster. I think I'll be waiting this round out, just like I was CS4 for the next version that can actually use all of my Mac Pro's processing power and RAM. It makes a difference when you're dealing with HD video. I'd like to be able to store an entire SD project in RAM. That'd be fun.

For another, fixing Compressor and Qmaster, or at least making them behave predictably or more user-friendly.

I forgot about the 64 bit part!

Could do with that for when I get a mac pro but on the lowly macbook FCE and no 64 bit will do just fine! :D

And everytime I open Compressor the white "welcome square" with the serial number is stuck on top of all the other windows. Annoying, must be a bug that should be fixed
