I very much doubt it. The way FCP works is that it has to wrap all movie files in quicktime containers in order to edit them properly; as such, your MPEG-2 transport streams such as that must be transferred into FCP using Log and Transfer to gain the wrapper.

I feel compelled to point out that MTS is not just used for AVCHD. MTS is an MPEG transport stream, which are often used for MPEG-2 recordings you find on HDD camcorders. It's a container for multiple formats.

Did they fix the "insufficient content for edit" and " action will split a dissolve (paraphrased)" bugs?

While there is some interesting looking improvements (especially in Color) I'm a bit underwhelmed. This feels more like a solid .5 update and not a whole new version. Hopefully, we'll see another solid feature update in 2010 (kinda like FCP4 to FCP 4.5) 'cause if this is all we get until 211 I'm even less impressed. I mean, should it really take four years to go from Color 1.0 to Color 2.0?

I'm in the middle of some projects though so I won't be able to upgrade until towards the end of the year.

i was kinda feeling the same way, but considering how mature of a product fcp is it's understandable. was hoping for a nicer interface in color though :(

Well, I'm between projects right now so now is actually the perfect time to upgrade and tinker. I'll be heading up to the Apple Store today to see if they have any upgrades and hopefully I will install it today and let you guys know what I think.

I was a bit disappointed with the update, but the update included two thing that I have been absolutely begging for; namely, dynamic shadows and depth of field in Motion. I really like the ProRes upgrade, too. For me, $300 is a steal for what I need.

Keep you guys posted!

I've been using Final Cut Studio 2 since it came out. I definitely recommend buying it!

about the FCS bible, it isn't useless, just easier to find tutorials online + video tutorials, and if anything happens and you don't know how to solve it, there is always google ;)

Do you mean the new Final Cut Suite or the real Final Cut Studio 2 that came out in 2007?

If it is the new version did you use the previous suites? Is there a vast noticeable improvement for you?

[Shout to anyone with big Apple contacts]

Can someone please go ask someone at Apple "WTF is going on " and "How long do we have to wait for the next release?"

Much appreciated

I'm new to Apple so strictly speaking I'm not talking about upgrading, but I would like to hear of anyone's experience in using the latest version of FCS. I would like to buy the 13" MB pro for maximum portability (with 24" cinema display at home), but am unsure if it will run FCS 3.

The minimum specs suggest that it will not work - Apple say the graphics card must have 128mb of VRAM (and 512mb of VRAM for Colour 1.5) and the Nvidea GeForce 9400m, which is the only video card option for the 13" MB Pro, has none. In other words, they say that if I want to run FCS 3 then as a minimum I must buy the 15" with the additional video card. Further, there seems to be the suggestion that the program will not even load unless it detects the higher spec video card.

But entries on this forum and elsewhere seem to suggest that the minimum spec as detailed by Apple is not necessary, although clearly it will lead to faster performance. Indeed some (but not all) Apple assistants think it will work - but they may only have experience of FCS 2 and not the latest, version 3.

I would much prefer the smaller 13", but clearly there's no point if it's not going to work. Therefore I would like to hear from anyone who has managed to load version 3 of Final Cut Studio onto a 13" 2.53ghz MB Pro to see if it works (none of the machines in the apple store in London have FCS 3 loaded yet.)

Many thanks.

That said, I've seen a lot of people jump into FCS or not get proper training from others. Editing is about more than just pushing clips around. Anybody can do that. A real editor knows what they're doing, why, and how to fix it when it breaks.

Care to elaborate in specifics. I really wanna know what a "real" editor knows and what makes him more "real" than any other guy jumping into FCS?

Maybe an editing moustache ... :D

Let's see...it includes, but is not limited to:

-Video formats (There's more than just DV, or HDV), framerate and why it matters, bitrate and why it matters.
-Pre/post roll content and how transitions work
-Audio levels and how to deal with a signal that is too "hot"
-What tools to use and when
-Making proper backups so a failed hard drive doesn't set you back several hours with an impending deadline
-Balancing color, understanding what a white point is
-Understanding what interlacing is and why it matters
-Properly formatting your text or graphic elements to work well in video

There are many, many more things but these are just a few that sprang out of the top of my head. If you really want more, ask.

Well i did ask, however - nothing out of the ordinary for any curious guy who can read, understand and use.

Not to mention matching action, sequencing, usually some mographs creation, what filters to use on music to help it 'duck' under the dialoge
(a good editor will do this, NOT just lower the volume of the music),
matching sound so that interviews recorded in two different places
sound as similar as possible....chroma keying, motion keying (yes, just
yesterday I had a timelapse shot in which some annoying people walked
aimlessly in the forground ruining the shot. I used motion keying to
remove the people from the shot.....took me about 45 seconds to do....)
and a HOST of other things. The more I learn about editing, the more I
realize I DON'T know!!!

You'd think so, but I attempted to train a lot of people who weren't really interested in doing more than pushing clips around before calling themselves editors. I had to bail them out of a lot of problems of their own making. It's a common attitude with many people.

A professional knows how to tell an engaging story. Everything else is supplemental. There are many technical aspects to editing that you may or may not need to know depending on your situation and many additional skill-sets you may or may not need to know depending on your situation, but if you can't tell an entertaining tale you are sunk.
