The 7800gtx is a PC card that has a rom chip transplanted from a donor mac card, or so i was told by the guy who i bought it from in the states - though i read that a few months later he started ripping people off and not sending cards out after receiving payment, so it may not be true i suppose. The original card was the stock card available at the Quad 3 years ago when I bought it, and when i try to boot with the stock card, nine times out of ten i get vertical lines all along the screen, and only 25% is visible. It has booted without problems using either card on a couple of occasions, but most of the time it freaks out in one way or another. This is driving me mad - I can't believe that a 3 year old machine may need to be replaced!

Thanks
Matt

Do you mind my asking who you bought it from?

I think I might have been another victim. :(

Can you make Blu-rays on PowerPC?

...I can't. Using information from this fantastic thread, I succeeded in getting a fully working FCS3 installation on my dual G5, EXCEPT that I cannot "Share" to a blu-ray from Final Cut Pro, and Compressor 3.5.2 is not behaving well for that purpose either.

I saw a post here of this same missing-preset problem and another similar post at Creative Cow - both unanswered. Adding mine, there are 3 posts of a missing "Blu-ray" option on FCP's Share pop-up menu. So I'm beginning to think this should be noted as another known problem with the unsupported installation.

It's really frustrating that one of the very few things not working is the one thing I want to do! I've been experimenting with Toast 10 for making "blu-ray on DVD" disks. Toast works OK for this but I was hoping Final Cut Studio might be superior (faster, better, easier, all of the above?). No luck so far. Advice welcome!

Indeed FCS Studio 3 does run on a Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz. I have 8 GB of RAM and a video card with 256MB of VRAM, 2TB. I have been using it now for about 6 weeks. It actually runs better then FCS 2 did on my G5.

You don’t have to use Pacifcist to load it either. The first update 7.0.1 was seen and loaded from Software Update, just like it is suppose too.

Hi Dave,

I'm running a MAC G5 Quad 2.5ghz. I want to run FCS 3 and see from your post that you didn't use Pacifist to load the software. Can you detail how you did load it in the first instance without pacifist?

Much appreciated.

this post tells you how to make an FCP installer that dosn't look to see if the machines is intel

make a read write disk image of the main install disk then follow the instructions on how to modify the installer, save back on to the disk image ( dont rename the file ) and install from that file.

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8406208/

Another approach is to instead delete the line below from the .dist file.

<installation-check script='installationCheck()'/>

Deleting this line will allow installation on anything, including machines without minimum VRAM. The approach of modifying the installer is MUCH faster and requires less manual input than using Pacifist. It seems like it might be more reliable as well, although I can't say I found anything wrong with the Pacifist installation. I think others have.

If anyone uses this unsupported method to install on a PowerPC, I'd very much appreciate hearing whether you can access share to Blu-ray options. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Evil Santa,

Do you use Disk Utility to make the read / write disk image of the main install disk? Also did you have to uninstall FCP 2 before successfully completing the install of FCP 3?

Your help is much appreciated!

Balls, it looks like it's academic as I can't seem to source Xcode 3.1.4 for Leopard (which I'm running on the G5). Any ideas?

The answer to your first question is yes, Disk Utility can "convert" the image to a writable one.

I was able to get XCode for free by signing up as a developer at Apple. It's not as bad as it sounds, just fill in the form and away you go. But I just went to look there and it looks like they want money to join. Hmmm... I wish I could recall exactly how I got in. You may have to search a bit, but I did get it directly from Apple in the last month or so, for free.

UPDATE: Found it: http://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa/wa/getSoftware?bundleID=20414

For those of you that have installed FCP7 on a G5, whats it like, speed wise? Compared with previous versions?

I figured out a new workaround to install with the original installer.
I opened the file "FinalCutStudio.dist" which is located on the Install DVD:
Installer/FinalCutStudio.mpkg/Contents/
I edited this file with Xcode.app (I have Apple Developer Tools installed)
and just removed the lines where it says Intel..., saved and burned a new Install DVD.
Now there's no error message anymore and you can use the installer as supposed!
Works perfectly and now I don't have to reenter my Serial everytime I restart :)

I tried this and got a java script error. I'm a newbie, could you be a little more detailed on "removing lines" is it just the word "Intel" the entire line, the brackets on previous and following lines, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm actually trying to install Final Cut Studio 3 now on my new (scrumpymacs.co.uk) Dual 2.3GHz PowerMac G5 with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive and my god this is pretty quick! I'm separating out my work from my personal stuff and this G5 is gonna be my work machine. I'm a high-quality YouTuber who uses Final Cut for my videos and I was quite annoyed when I put my FCS disc in and it told me that it wasn't Intel. However, it's installing nicely now with Pacifist so I'll see how it goes. Totally ridiculous that Apple no longer support A 4 or 5 year old machine! There are still a lot of loyal PowerPC customers out there who are the original, long-term Mac users!

Rant over, thanks for introducing me to Pacifist!

Thanks a ton Mr. Stabby. I am still stumped in the xcode part of it because I have never really used it. I cant seem to open the install package in xcode. I even called apple to see if they could tell me and the guy who i talked to said he had never even heard of xcode. I replied that it comes with snow leopard.
anyways, i cant figure this out. do i need to build it in packagemaker?

how do you find the .dist file in xcode i cant figure out how to use it to delete the part that talks about checking if its an intel machine
thanks

i figured it out.
ok its simple to find the .dist file if anyone else is an idiot like me.
first things first, make sure xcode is installed
burn the first install disc into a dmg onto your desktop
open disk utility
click on the dmg that you just made
click on convert on the top of the disk utility window
save it wherever you want but change the image format from compressed to read/write
press save
once it saves, open up the dmg
right click on install final cut studio
click on show original
right click on installer
click on show package contents
double click contents
right click on finalcutstudio.dist
click on open with
click on your harddrive
click on developer
click on applications
click on xcode
click on open at the bottom right part of the window

now wait for xcode to open (it may take a few seconds)
go down a few lines and there are two lines that say intel.
delete those two lines and press file then save in the menu bar.
install like normal

Youtube Video

I will make a video tonight showing how to do this and put a link on the thread.

can i ask a stupid question?

I have FCE 4.0 on my Quad G5, however when i try to import HD video (AVCHD) from my camera into G5 it gives me an error saying something like AVCHD is not supported on the PowerPC platform. Which i have read up on and it seems to be right. Now to my question...
Whats the point of using FCS3.0 on a PPC unit? really with everything going HD now how can you guys be editing HD video on a G5??

Your question is not stupid at all - FCS 3.0 doesn't help on a G5! After hours of unsuccessful trials I went back to FCS 2.0. I edit HDV as HDV (no conversion) in FCP and play the edited product back to tape with no visual loss. And with Toast I was able to burn HD material onto a "normal" DVD (I could put like 35 minutes on it) which only plays in a BluRay player.

So far my G5 experience. But now with the new Mac Pro finally here I decided to take the step, because HD on a red laser disk is not only limited in time but (so they say) also in picture quality. And the Toast menus really suck ... I am looking forward to a hopefully better experience - but most probably having to take the Adobe way as Apple doesn't want to beef up DVDSP to BDSP:(

Not everyone uses Hi Def, not every one can afford a new Mac Pro.

I found myself in need of Final Cut Studio 3 running on a PowerPC computer pretty badly today and this thread was helpful, after sifting through and finding this:

Another approach is to instead delete the line below from the .dist file.

<installation-check script='installationCheck()'/>

One of my Intel computers went down and is in for repair, and I needed something desperately. And there was my Quad Core 2.5 GHz G5.

I made a read/write disk image of the install DVD, then I navigated to the .dist file, opened in in Text Edit (believe it or not), searched for and deleted that line, saved. And that was it. Installation went normally. And it runs far better than Final Cut Studio 2 did on that same computer.

I think Apple dropped support for PowerPC just because. I'm quite happy with the performance compared to what I expected from it.

installing with pacifist

i dont get how to install with pacifist. it extracts fine a lot of files, but where to copy them? if i put fcp app in the app folder it crashes immediately and tells me that it miss files in library and in other locations. sorry for innocent questions, i am not very trained in this computer install things ... :)

updat:
i went the xcode route modifing the install file, and everythings fine on my ppc 2,5 quad.

FCP version to work on G4 and new MBP? (PowerPC AND Intel?)

I realize that no one's posted on this thread for a while, and my question is not one that anyone else is going to care about, but hoping that someone will take pity on me, here goes:

What (if any) version of FCP could I try to buy that would work on an old 667Mhz PowerPC Powerbook G4 (ti-book)(upgraded to 1GB SDRAM, running 4 external FW drives, 3 from a PCMCIA adapter - since the internal drive is only 30GB) but also work on a MacBookPro with Express Card slot that I am hoping to get?

Have been using FCP 4 with the HD updates but that was installed when I was an assistant editor so I need my own discs so I can install a larger internal hard drive.

I've heard of "universal" versions that work both on PowerPC's and Intel processors, but were they FCP 4 or FCP 5 and what do I need to specifically look for?... thank you!

My idea is to buy this and then an upgrade for the MBP. Thank you for any suggestions!

ps. I am looking for a 15" (better to fit in carry-on when flying) MacBookPro with an Express Card slot and a Matte screen - any recommendations regarding that? Thanks again.

You should be able to make Final Cut Studio, w/ Final Cut Pro v5.1, to run on both without "hacking", although you may not be able to install all of the programs on the PowerBook. I'm not sure if you could get something as late as Final Cut Studio 3 working on the PB w/ the tips in this thread, but perhaps it's possible. If you wind up trying it, let us know!

Now, for a follow-up question of my own. I'm ecstatic to have FCS3 running on my G5/2.5GHz DP...thanks for the tips here! I've modified the RT enabler, as even unmodified DV clips in a DV sequence required rendering if I didn't. I don't relish the idea of having to say "OK" each and every time I launch the program, though, due to the "One or more unsupported enablers" nag message.

Has anyone found a way around this, or know exactly what the program checks to determine that mods have been made? It's more than just modification date on the file, apparently, as I replaced the file w/ an untouched version, but FCP still knew something had been changed (even though I'd changed it back). When I replaced the entire "Enablers" folder that the RT enabler file sits in, the error went away. Hmmmm...any thoughts?

Thanks,
Fred

Thank you Fred / fhturner! I didn't know all versions of FCP 5 would work with either Intel or PowerPC chips.

please, need help, already deleted INTEL lines but cant install, allways get ERROR READING PACKAGE Java Script Error,
thanks in advance
