Apple care what others see. Very smart on Apple’s part. Distinguishes other devices from the iPhone. People are saying the notch is because of the Face ID sensor. But it was intentional.

Exactly. And not just in “real life”. Until now, every time a phone is drawn in a comic or cartoon, one knew it was meant to be an iPhone by the drawn home button. The notch now has that same purpose.

The notch put me a woman in my bad almost everyweek because they know what im holding when im in the bar and the three pointed star outside the bar
[doublepost=1510433849][/doublepost]So the notch is the front signature and apple logo on the back. Just like an mercedes, in front and on the back

By masking the notch in software, you're going to have a bad time with non uniform luminance degradation on the top part of the screen (essentially burn in).

There's a reason Android flavors dont keep a static black bar at the top/bottom anymore.

I'd love it if the folks that do not understand this concept think about a scenario in which you buy four brand new tires, but you only drive on two of them somehow. Over time the tread on the two sets of tires is going to look different, one is going to be slightly worn out.

This is essentially what you're doing when you create static dark zones on OLED screens.

So the appearance of a bezel instead of a notch? I prefer the notch.

Would have worked better in that example if the top was gray to eliminate the bezel look. I still prefer the notch.

Thanks for helping those who are looking for a solution.

There’s no point in attempting to conceal a defining design charismatic.

Or buy another iPhone that has a nicer looking front panel lol.

In seriousness though I really do hope the notch is just part of a transition period for Apple while they perfect the technology. I hope this apparent gash looking design compromise isn’t just ‘run with’ and turned into some kind of distinguishing identity aesthetic. It does make me cringe a bit.

The most logical post in this thread. The notch is Apple's new trademark, contrary to what others may believe. Accept it for what it is as you stated or ignore it altogether. But it's here to stay for the time being.

I do expect the notch to act as a defining differentiator with only minor tweaks like the home button was tweaked since iPhone 1.

From a design perspective the only logical reason to choose an a funky aspect ratio like 19.5:9 is headroom for Face ID. Without it you’re much closer to a more sane 18:9 which is the standard everyone else seems to be going.

That’s what I fear. Apple have always been very good at styling and as a product designer myself I’ve always admired this style, but this is perhaps the first time I’ve felt they’ve messed it up. It’s one of those things you’ll get to live with, but i’ll always think it let’s the design down. It’s one of those Marmite features that will have some fully behind it and defensive, and those that think it looks rubbish.

To be fair, Rudolph's nose only changed color. Now if they had modified it to obstruct his airways and the shape of his nose.... that would sound like a more fit example ;)
Actually it did make his nose much larger. He couldn’t breathe through it so he “talked funny”.

I have watched Rudolph every year without fail since I can remember. :D.

Someday when Apple perfects the technology to completely fill the screen, people will complain about losing the notch that gave the iPhone its distinct character.
nah
People will be plenty happy with the apple logo and name on the back of the phone. Its the way everything should be...

Apple's guidelines restrict developers from hiding the notch because it is the notch itself that makes the iPhone X distinct and identifiable. They want people around you to know you are using an iPhone X. If you hide the notch, it looks like any other full screen smartphone.
Thats why APPLE designed their stocks app to not be anything what you said.
That is the way developers should embrace the notch just like that app.

Well, if nothing else, Apple’s design decision has certainly generated a lot of conversation about their new phone. Much like the intense debates over whether the Apple Watch is attractive or ugly (I vote the former), which is still debated to this day.

Also as a side note, at least one of Apple’s own apps, Reminders, hides the notch.

If you can hide the notch then why can Apple get rid of it when playing video in landscape. If this is all form over function then that's a really stupid approach. Steve Jobs would never have accepted the notch. Like the majority of us he would have seen it as unnecessary.

It will be gone in A YEAR.
