So, we're talking about folding on iMacs now. Still have a question about that: How do you guys get the iMacs screen go to sleep when folding? Mine screen keeps going out of sleepmode after a few seconds.

you have that problem too!?!?

its so weird, current my imac screen will rewake after a few seconds of turning off (i have a hotkey to turn it into off mode) - but then it turns back on. the thing is though that its not even running. so i dont know.

my work imac isnt effected by this.

you can use a little app called Shades, or something like that. It will put the contrast all the way down (first remember the hotkeys of this app! Trust me on this one!!) but haven't found anything to get the brightness all the way down or get the monitor to stay asleep...

im nearly at 200,000!!! :D

hey keep it going, you'll get there!

Hey all! been kind of apathetic for awhile... Our team numbers look really good, keep it up! I should fire up another machine or 3, maybe...

Thanks.

nice to hear from you whiterabbit! well, we could use a few more machines that you have lying around. how's that 6-core doing for you?

May I ask what the heck you guys are talking about?

folding@home. check out this link. it's a distributed computing project that helps scientists solve diseases like cancer.

a user downloads work units, and gets points for completing those units. this thread is to congratulate those that get over 1 million points. feel free to join our team! we'd love to have you

I fired up the 6 core machine and it is working on a bigadv unit.

I suppose I might as well get the rest of the hardware going for awhile to see what we can do for team points. Maybe we can hit 4 grand for 7 day points, that would be cool.

OK, everything is running again, 7 gpu's and a bunch of cpu cores.

Now I just wait for the electric bill.

wahts this mean?

(apart from the obvious)

Hi, my limited understanding is that this is normal for the smp client.

It occurs when one or more threads start to get desynchronized due to other processes taking CPU time, so it starts to reallocate/balance threads.
I think there is a slight performance hit having to do this, which is why it isn't on by default. However, it's better than having to wait for all threads to sync at the end.
If you run a system that doesn't have many other processes running you may see it getting most of the way through a unit before it has to enable it, whereas a heavily used system may trigger it straight away.

Hope that helps
Rob

Congratulations! 24 million is a lot. How long have you been folding? I should have hit 7 digits by now.... :p

thanks! i started back in Jan 2008, but didn't really get into for real until late 2009 or early 2010 though.

If your i7 rig hadn't blown up, you probably would be!

yep! that's right!

btw, do you plan to fold again after your rig catching on fire? i don't think anyone would blame you for folding anymore

Oh yeah, I'll be folding again. I know the next few weeks are gonna be kinda slow but after I get everything situated in my new house, I'll be folding 24/7 again :D
