Finally got my 7 digits

Ok, I think the panics were caused by something I did, not the update, that is what I get for making too many changes at once, I'll have to test the configurations to see what caused them. All is well at the moment.

I moved the 2 GPU machines to the basement where it is much cooler (I know the dust and spiders might kill them, but... hopefully no snakes...) and it is almost quiet upstairs now! The mac pro is soooo quiet! No other Mac that I remember having has been so quiet. I had to run the KVM and network cables between an air duct and the floor, it's kinda goofy but better than a new hole in the floor. Oh, and I accidentally created a network loop, not a good thing as it took me a while to fix. Downtime was only about 2 1/2 hrs, should have been less but I wasn't very well prepared; it was getting way too hot upstairs already.

Good! 12 cores would be awesome! (24 logical cores).
As long as you have a case on your machines. The spiders and dust shouldn't be too bad, just clean them once a month or so

That is about 11-12 days per 1 million points, which would mean about 2.5 million points per month. If I can keep that up for the rest of the year that would put me at around 34 million points or therabouts. The big question is can I afford to keep it up! and also if nothing breaks, catches fire, melts or runs away!
What computers do you have operating to get those points? You must be an IT admin or something surely they are not your computers?

I have 4 amd athlon x2 4400+ machines which don't produce vary many points, a phenom x4 9600, a phenom II x4 965 black with 3 gpu's, core i7 920 with 3 gpu's and a 2009 Mac Pro 2x2.66 cpu's running bigadv units. The gpu's are 2 x GT 260 and 4 x GTX 275. I know that is a bit of money and the power bill is quite high, but hey it's a thing to spend money on I suppose. I could spend it on my house and yard which could use it but... At work we have a pile of new Nehalem Dell's and IBM power 7's that I would love to fold on but I can't do that because it would interfere with the work they have to do which is bio science related as well. And well, I would lose my job... they aren't very keen on personal use of company hardware.
That much, what are modern computers pumping out these days! What would be producing the most points per day? I'm thinking about buying a graphics card just to fold on if that is the case Also how do you find the GPU I have had to limit mine down to 70% as I find it interferes with the effects that Windows 7 does.

yeah i've spent a lot on systems also. and yeah, i think it's a good thing to spend money on

well if you have a fast i7 pc, or a dual xeon mac pro 08-09, then you can run the -bigadv units. that's really where the points are at. the faster you get the unit done, the more points you get (you get a time-based bonus). so some people have i7 pcs and they overclock them to get it done as fast as possible.
GPU folding can get a lot of points, but they produce more heat. i have 3 gpus in one machine, and they get around 15-20K ppd. but with one i7 overclocked, i can get over 20k ppd
So I should put the -bigadv into my i7, it's not a great i7 I think its at 1.66ghz and in a laptop. Should I risk it? How can I maximise the PPD from my i7 as its only doing like 1-2k a day I think.
1.66 Ghz and a laptop isn't going to make it for bigadv units they need to be completed within about 3-4 days to make it worthwhile and I doubt your machine would make that time frame. An overclocked i7 920 at about 3-4? Ghz will work. My i7 920 is not overclocked so I don't do bigadv units on it and it also is running 3 gpu's so it has some overhead from them.
Hey twoodcc, when did you sneak past lyzardking, I totally missed it, congrats for making it to 3rd place! And you're at about 1200th place overall, won't be long before you get to 3 digits!
sorry, i should have been more clear. i forgot that they have i7 laptop processors out. only the desktop processors can do -bigadv units, and they gotta be overclocked to be worth it (they are very easy to overclock).
yeah, i wouldn't overclock with 3 gpu's in there (well, actually i'd probably try it, but you're doing so well with ppd already, not worth the risk)
haha, thanks. yeah i think i moved into 3rd yesterday or the day before. yeah looking forward to 3 digits. i just gotta get this other system up and running. i really need to rearrange my gpus again, but just haven't had the time

so i hit 6 million on 17 mar, and today (20 apr) i hit 7 million! that's about 34 days. much better than my last million, but still not as good as it could be. hopefully i'll get everything worked out and going smoothly
