Fire on Plane Caused by Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7

If that's the opinion you hold, then you're holding it wrong.
Just something I’ve learned over a few years of doing business.
There are times when I’ve seen big contracts, (approaching 6 figures lost), and then won back again when the price is right. Unfortunately society today is built on blame and litigation.

Because everything is better with an XKCD reference:

I looked it up once, laptop batteries do have about as much energy as a hand grenade. It's all a question of how long you take to discharge it...

Except the Note 7 is expensive as the iPhone 7 Plus. Also, no, people DON'T have short memories because Apple critics always bring up the iPhone 4 antenna gate from 6 years ago.
There is a saying, “You must have the courage of your convictions”. When the price and circumstance are right the vast majority of people will do what suits their wallet and their wants, (not necessarily their needs). They will bring up historic events and then still go ahead and exchange monies.

The information we have now is that Samsung pressured the suppliers to deliver early and clearly skipped over checking their work.
So they weren't victims in this, they voluntarily and knowingly rushed their product to market to get a leg up on the competition and now they will pay the price of doing it.
This isn't bad for everyone it's bad for Samsung and their costumers who shouldn't stay costumers after this fiasco is over.

Apple is a Samsung customer.

Feel free to play as "fast & loose" with YOUR safety as you choose.
I believe that most of us treasure our family's lives and our own lives enough that this "one example" (ummmm.... really?? try googling "replacement Note 7 fire) is enough to concern us & really really not want to be on a plane w/ a Note 7. Full stop.
I have 5 fire resistant bags used to store electronics I rarely use, spare camera batteries, and RC batteries. If that is fast and loose, I guess I need to slow down in life! o_O .

You're not wrong. But this is worryingly recent. Phone gets recalled and the replacement which can't be more than days or a few weeks old has already gone boom. Doesn't look good.

I am curious whether we are absolutely certain it's an actual replacement though.
I question the history and use of that phone as well. Could very well be that it was at unmolested phone, but, we don't know the motives behind this person, or if this is a legitimate claim.

Will never understand how people can hate a company just for being the competition of a company they like.

Samsung makes amazing tech, many of which apple users will profit from. Competition is good.

It's because in our modern, consumerist society, people wrap their identities around the products they purchase. They get lots from advertising execs, who convince them that they're making these identity decisions on their own.

And people knock Apple for their QA when I don't think they've ever screwed up something this bad. The launch of the Galaxy Note 7 may go down as the worst product launch in history.

The initial exploding batch was forgivable. When you're going through the motions, mistakes happen--happens to everyone, even serious ones from time to time. But replacing it with yet another exploding phone is a whole new level of botch. It exposes a much more serious character flaw than inattention: the unwillingness to learn from even your biggest and loudest mistakes. It's the flaw that "keeps on giving". It's a foretelling and guarantee of a company's downward path and inevitable demise, just as it is a person's--unless character can be corrected. But that requires paradigm shift which is sometimes simply out of one's control.

But first let's wait to see if more reports of exploding replacement phones come in.

Also fast charging. I love how fast Samsung phones charge compared to an Iphone.

And it could very well be that fast charging is behind these Samsung fire incidents. Aggressively charging Lithium-Ion batteries comes with consequences; some short-term, some long-term, some relatively benign, and some very adverse.

Incorrectly specifying the battery design, placing high current demands on both discharge and charging cycles, not understanding how to properly dissipate battery-generated heat, along with insufficient and nadequate testing and QA, can result in adverse consequences.

Dear Samsung,

'Fire' EVERYONE responsible for producing these batteries.

Sincerely,
TMRJIJ

EDIT: That was not unintentional but I'll take it.

Exactly there is so much misinformation on this thread its quite funny.

The batteries at fault were made by SDI part of samsung group. There was an issue with Cathode and anodes making contact thus causing an explosion. It was nothing to do with Wireless charging or fast charging.

Samsung pushed a software update which limited the capacity to 60% or 80% if you changed the toggle. This was a precautionary move BUT ALSO a clever one as many people were stating "well my phone doesn't heat up so im gonna keep it" So by crippling it at a level which cannot be reversed ensures EVERYONE returns there note 7

However

An interesting issue is that Samsung was unable to track exactly which phones had faulty batteries, their IMEI checkers were useless. I had the dual sim model, one imei number said my phone was to be recalled the second said it was good to go.

This leads my on to why it could be possible for a replacement to be faulty.

My replacement was received last Saturday, i have the green battery icon but more importantly i have the black square sticker on the outer box. BUT some receive a box with a printed black square box and others the sticker like mine. Mine was manufactured before the recall thus was still in the shipping channel, those with a printed black box were manufactured after the recall. So if their imei checker is next to useless, without opening the phone (and every phone in the system) how did they know mine and others were actually safe? In the short period from recall to exchange how the hell could they verify every single phone in the shipping channel was safe?

But regards to people harping on about this will tarnish samsung forever is this the new apple is doomed meme people like putting out? I will buy the best product at the time from whomever regardless of previous issues, by your reckoning, tesla should be out of business as well as Volkswagon and BP but they seem to be going strong. Uber cause nothing but grief for existing taxi systems in cities and the public back the local cabbies out of "solidarity" and then proceed to book an uber because its cheaper and faster.

However as i stated in an email to Samsung head of Uk division, the phone exploding is unfortunate and can happen to any manufacture but the piss poor way they handled the exchange in the UK as well as for Dual dim owners was a downright embarrassment and that alone did make me think twice and was going to put the device on ebay.

I see lots of people asserting various causes for the fires. Never any links. What I'm hearing is that the replacement phones are identical to the recalled phones except for firmware changes. I have no link, so that's just hearsay. If you're going to claim you have more than hearsay, then could you please add a link so all of us can finally be informed? Thanks!

No it won’t, don't be ridiculous. People have short memories and smaller wallets than they would like. If price and circumstance suits them they will very likely change anything - not just their phone.
Unfortunately I agree, sulfuric. Like a kidney stone this will painfully pass and out comes the Samsung Note Rev 2 or whatever and people will line up.

The only unknown is if Apple will "go there" with their next round of ads. Everyone else makes anti-Apple potshots their ads' centerpieces, but Apple hasn't done that since the I'm A Mac campaign. Not like Cook's Apple to kick someone when they're down, but this debacle is begging for some classics!

They forgot to copy Apple's battery and charging tech. They should stick to wafer fabrication - that's what they do best.

I don't even like their TVs.

This happened so conveniently for both Google and Apple. I do wish that Google dethrone Samsung. The smartphone game would be more interesting when it's finally Google VS Apple.

Screw this. They need to ban them from selling Notes and they need to ban Notes in airports. Samsung had a chance to rectify the issue and clearly it failed. Suck it up; your device failed this year. There's no need to put people's lives at risk for profit. I hate sounding knee-jerk, but this is a replacement device catching fire; it's time for them to own up.

Maybe going supernova was supposed to be a feature? Or a premature planned-obsolescence scheme?

steve jobs would've never made a replacement samsung phone with batteries that exploded on a flight from louisville to baltimore.

Must admit. I did wonder how stuff like this gets past. Then again, the years of my position in management have taught me a lot.

Whilst in the field, I’d say to myself, “I don't know how they didn't find this in testing”. Once in management I found that they test just a small sample of devices, (and obviously not nearly enough of them). Also that sometimes companies know of significant faults and still release the product anyway.
