So do we need to update our cars somehow for the new 3rd party app navigation in CarPlay? I updated my 7+ to iOS 12, connected to my 2018 Atlas but no Google Maps. Which I’d LOVE to be able to use Google Maps or Waze in CarPlay.

The apps need to be updated. Apps don’t just magically modify themselves to add CarPlay code just because Apple now permits developers of map apps to target CarPlay.

Can’t take effects photos in messages. Just closes the photo mode.
Works for me

The release notes with this beta are long and list a dozen or more apps (all EA games, e.g.) that will have issues. You may not lose iMessages, but if you did Apple is not going to have much sympathy.

I've installed these early preview betas before and usually regretted it due to instability and app incompatibilities. I went a month last year without access to my main banking app.

Also, FYI, a *bunch* of the highlighted features are not yet shipping on iPads. Like multi-user FaceTime.

I really look forward to hearing reports back from you brave souls installing today, so thank you guys for taking one for us and telling about your impressions!

That’s why it’s best (and advised) not to install them on your daily driver. A lot of us (devs) have devices we only use for development purposes, so it’s not so bad slapping it on there and making sure your apps will be fully compatible come launch day.

Saying that, I have in the past, if I’ve found a beta stable enough and with enough new features I want to play with put it on my personal devices. Don’t think I’ve ever actually regretted it, because when I do it I know to expect issues at some point. It’s a beta after all, not a finished product.

iPhone X? With Memoji?

So, I decided to take the plunge and install 12 on my daily driver as it seemed pretty stable on development devices.

Effects photos works fine for me (iPhone X) but can’t add an Animoji to Effects Photo. Animoji and Memoji working fine otherwise.

Edit*
Sad though it may be, one of my favourite things right now is Screen Time. I’m a sucker for information. And that information is already telling me I use my iPhone too much. Once every 14 minutes, that can’t be good :D

I have been waiting for a feature like Screen Time to limit my kids' device use and I can't wait to try this. But once we install the developer beta, how are we supposed to test this without installing the beta on our kids' devices? I can't see any way to do that unless I sign in on their phones with my Apple ID, but wouldn't that replace all of their iCloud data with mine? Is there another way to install the beta on their phones?

Just add their device to your developer account. You don’t need to log into it with your id.

I don't have a paid developer account, just a basic free one. I poked around but it seems like there is no way for me to add more devices to my account.

I guess I thought it was a simple display redirect handled by the OS, not a functional the app itself. Much like when iPhone apps first ran on the iPad. iPad could double the resolution to make the app bigger on the display.

Nope, that's not how CarPlay works. It's why CarPlay apps look nothing at all like the same app looks when displayed on the iPhone. It's handled much like iphone/ipad in the sense that you have to create different interface builder scenes for both (but unlike iphone/ipad it's non-optional). You also need to have entitlements for CarPlay in your bundle, and those have to be granted by Apple and included in the app package - they don't magically show up just because apple changes its policy.

Can you not just add them from Xcode? Sorry, i've always been paid so I don't know the limitations of the free accounts.

Does anyone know if I use a developer certificate to install iOS 12, will I be able to update to the public beta? Or will I have to restore back to 11.4 and then install the public beta certificate?

Anybody who could tell us how it runs on iPad Air or iPhone 5s? thanks in advance.

well I have it running on 10.5 ipad and its fast...so far what I use as a day driver works fine. VPN, exchange email (manual since I dont use push on my ipad) etc

I have an iPad Air that was perfect with iOS10, with iOS11 is now a brick. Was wondering if Apple will give my iPad back with iOS12, I'm not part of that 95% satisfaction.

Yea I would hope so, since my young one has a iPad mini 3 and ios 11 is slow and crap on it. Considering on putting this one it... even with it in beta its still better than ios 11 on that POS right now.

I was curious about this as well, but haven't come across the answer yet. I'm curious if we would just delete the Developer Profile off the phone and then re-add the public profile once it is available...

Just stay on the dev version. The dev and the public beta are the same.
