Gotta love the $600 upgrade from 8GB to 32 GB memory! Absolutely beyond ridiculous. Just price the stupid thing higher, we get it, it's a new state of the art display. But don't take us for idiots so you can advertise the price as "only" being $2499 when most people will at least want to upgrade some of the most basic specs.

Correct.

Connecting 2xDisplayPort 1.2 is a silly option to even bring up. Do it right or don't bother.

:apple:

And you need two TB controllers to push more data through your two ports than a single TB2 port (and controller) provides. No Macs beyond the Mac Pro have more than one TB controller. Very likely because the mobile CPUs/chipsets don't have enough PCI lanes.

So the OP was correct in saying that there are no applications that will look good on this monitor for years to come.

Fiction. I've been using tons of retina-sharp apps, from Apple and third parties alike. You mean "years ago"?

There's a reason people love retina MacBook Pros.

Really Apple? I think the price is really really ridiculous. As glad as I am in terms of getting a display that allows me to play/edit my GoPro videos, I am really really really bummed out at the price. If apple thinks this is not meant for mass market, then why have it on iMac. They should make the cinema displays 5K... Oh, and did I say "really" enough?

Yup. Wake me up when Apple releases the 21" Retina iMac. It should not be all that difficult for Apple to put retina in the smaller iMac display.

Enjoy your perpetual nap. I don't see a 21" in the pipeline anytime soon. The engineering challenges of a 4K or 5K display at 21" are potentially higher. The smaller dot pitch means a way higher pixel density. Such a display is likely not feasible today due to challenges in manufacturing. No one is going to put R&D dollars towards a product with a limited market. I've never heard anyone say, I'd love to edit video or photos on a smaller monitor. Once you go desktop, portability largely goes out the window.

You don't have to buy Apple's RAM for this, do you? Anyone know?

Apparently 4 slots of RAM available. When I ordered mine (16GB) the sales guy said two open slots available which could take any RAM.

False. I have to use the old pages on my 2014 rMBP because the latest version lacks basic functionality. (Canvas, page reordering, facing pages, vertical ruler, for example).

The whole application looks terrible. The text is horribly fuzzy.

The problem is that rMBPs have been out for over two years and there is still no software to replace the old iWork apps from apple. The new versions still don't have the basic functions of the original. So the OP was correct in saying that there are no applications that will look good on this monitor for years to come.

If iWork is really the only thing you use on it, then sure (besides the fact that OS X will look a lot nicer). I still don't know if what you said about Pages '09 is true. Are you sure you aren't running it in "low-res mode"? Lots of old apps that haven't been updated have crisp text on rMBPs.

P.S. I dumped Pages for TeXShop for the time being: open standard LaTeX format, and it plays nice with git :D

Dell's 5K display with the exact same resolution is $2500. With the iMac you get a desktop class computer thrown in for free. I won't be updating anytime soon as I just got my iMac last Christmas. $2500 is quite reasonable in my opinion.

The target market for this iMac is the pro photographer/videographer, not the average guy that just bought the GoPro Hero 4.

I want and need this in my life. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with my specced out 2011 iMac. Guess I'll wait to see how the screens fare given the problems rMBP consumers had.

What problems? Running an original rMBP (also specced out) without issue. Keep trying to sell myself on a reason to upgrade, but it's just too damn rock solid to give up.

Yeah, I didn't even think about this at first. This iMac is an amazingly good deal if 5K is what you need. The 5K displays will get cheaper once they get more popular, though. Also, the guy you're replying to is complaining about the cost of the RAM upgrades. Apple always gouges you on those.

Looks great! Agree that 8gb of RAM is not good.. in fact, it's quite bad for a computer of this price. At least go 16gb standard. I wonder why they swapped back to AMD?

I was originally thinking of replacing my ailing Hackintosh with a basic MacMini, but after making some minimal changes to the base it doesn't seem worth it when the 27/5k is roughly twice the price for far more than twice the computer. I mean, come on, sure it starts at $500, but for a dual core i5 at 1.4ghz. It's a stripped down Mac Air in a box. Darn that screen is sexxy and would make working on pictures a dream.

i don't know why it's shocking, it should be fairly obvious. Apple gave you the least amount of specs for $2499 because they want to make money. It's as simple as that. I thought people love choice.

I would never understand naysayers, build this computer yourself and see what price you get.

Mac Pro cannot power 5k display with weak Display Port 1.2.

No mac can power 5k so ZERO chance of 5k Thunderbolt display coming.

:apple:

Is that for real? The Mac Pro, released LAST year, can not power this high-resolution display? I find that unbelievable! Guess we'll be seeing updated Mac Pros by January.

it's definitely not POWER considering it's more powerful than the imac. It's mostly to do with I/O. Has resolution finally outpaced I/O?

The 13" and 15" panels in the retina MBPs are feasible, right? And people are clamouring for a retina Air. It's not about "professionals", it's about people who want high-dpi displays -- a trend which will only increase given how bad Yosemite (in particular Helvetica Neue) looks at low-dpi.

This new iMac looks amazing, but man what I would give for a "lamp" iMac g4 with a 15 or 17" retina screen on it.

Don't they have the MacPro for that, which drives up to three 4K displays? I think the iMac is for average Joes.

Well, 5k is super bleeding edge that nothing can do it in a single link yet. This is because 5k is a very recent development. A lot of stuff doesn't support 4k above 24Hz.

It sounds like they chose not to support it. Dual thunderbolt / dual Displayport can probably do it by tiling or similar method. It remains to be seen if that works well without sync "tearing".

Really? You want bleeding edge on dirt cheap budget? Since when is anything like that?

Here, Dell announced 5k in September, still not shipping, and the projected price for the monitor for $2500:

Purchased.

AMAZING technology Apple.

WOW

You bought one before even being able to SEE one in person? If you believe half of what was said about it, then I have an AMAZING Bridge for sale. One look and you'll say "WOW". :D

Just finished ordering!

Opted for the 4.0GHz i7 processor, 3TB Fusion drive, and 4GB video card. I'll max out RAM later.

It's not like high DPI screens never existed before. There are people that have it, just on a smaller screen.

Personally, I'm happy people run out to get the latest, I tend to wait and see.
