I had promised myself I would resist buying the new iPad. Damnit!
Me too but I failed
I had promised myself I would resist buying the new iPad. Damnit!
Said in a hoarse whisper: I want it.
"IF YOUR CARRIER SUPPORTS IT"
Anyone know how much EXTRA it will cost for hotspot tethering?
So what happens by this time next year? Will it still be called "The New iPad"? It seems that Apple will have to change the name sooner or later.
Maybe the 2013 iPad will be "The Really New iPad" followed by "The Ultra New iPad" in 2014.
Success! Finally I got in and completed an order for a 32GB White AT&T version (using Safari on Windows). In the meantime, I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 and downloaded iTunes 10.6, and still managed to get a little bit of work done this afternoon.
I guess working late tonight and the weekend is worth it.
"The Tablet, Formerly Known As iPad"!

I am a long time MacBook Air user and skipped the first 2 iPads, but the LTE and Retina Display were enough for me.

Yes, I'm a little annoyed by that. AT&T supports hot spot on the $50 plans for the iPhone. I wonder if they will do that for the iPad, or if they will make it available on the $30 plan, or if they will find a way to charge extra for it.
90% of the market using a desktop computer has requirements over and above anything these iOS devices can do. How much RAM is in the latest iPad now? 1GB How much is in the typical newer Mac or Windows PC today? At least 4x that much! How about video capabilities? You *really* think the iPad's video processor is anywhere near as capable as a mid-grade (never mind a "high end") video card from nVidia or ATI?
The concept of "cloud storage" will not likely go away. But it may evolve into something different than companies are currently developing.
Where things are going is really towards a world where you have your data and it is stored somewhere, accessible everywhere. The debate in the tech sector seems to be over where that "somewhere" is. Some think it is in centralized services like iCloud/Dropbox. Some think it is your smartphone. Some think it will be in more advanced NAS systems.
Sounds like you fall into the third group. Personally? I think it will be all 3 to one degree or another. There are some real technical/social issues with personal clouds (either the NAS or smartphone variety) that aren't exactly easy to solve. Where at least some of them are considered solved when talking about centralized services.
When you're running 10 apps at a time as you may on a desktop PC, then you need all that extra memory and available GPU. When you're on a single-task oriented device, you do not. It's really that simple. There is no reason a device with a 10" screen needs to run 4 or 5 apps at a time, when the screen is too small to allow you to quickly switch between them.
And you seem to be missing the whole MOBILE thing. The tasks you're going to do on these types of devices are going to be while you're away from your normal workspace. More than likely most people will use these devices to either update stuff they've already created or use them to create something quick and simple on the spot. You seem to act like once you have an iPad you'll never be able to buy or use another desktop computer ever again! Really?
90% of the market using a desktop computer would more than likely disagree with your opinion.
Did you miss that "the new iPad" is just the marketing term?
Haven't you had the chance to see the back of the new iPad?

The reason they use that phrase is to wean people off the notion of version numbers. Two months down the road this will just be "the iPad" (full stop). In fact, I'd be very surprised if the next iPhone isn't just the "the iPhone". From a marketing perspective, I think it's brilliant.
Now here comes the question - what cases for the iPad 2 will fit the iPad 3![]()
If you look back in history...
There are many different models of "Macintosh" computers. And one of those models is actually called "Macintosh" and nothing else. The first one. The second one was "Macintosh Plus". There were many different models of Pentium processors. And the very first one was called "Pentium". There is one model of the iPod that is called "iPod" and nothing else.
"What was the first iPod that you bought"? "An iPod".
"No I mean _which_ iPod". "An iPod".
I find it a amazing that people find a x4 increase in resolution not that big of a deal? A quad-core processor in this device would be like having a car that goes 600mph. x4 graphics is a huge addition. The hotspot capability and BT 4.0 are also very nice additions.
The only thing that has kept me from pre-ordering is that I'm waiting to see which of the two US wireless carriers will actually offer hotspot capabilities in their 4G iPad plans.
It's the iPad (3rd Generation)
You can always order both and then cancel one of them. Just sayin'
