I have ATT on an iPad1, but went with Verizon for the "New iPad" since they have full 4G coverage in a nearby city, where ATT does not. I spend a lot of time there.

I need the hotspot for my MBP and ipod. 5GB/month for $50 with tethering doesn't sound too bad, but they'll probably stick another $10 charge on top.

NYC just got LTE on AT&T. I was tempted to get the Verizon version, but I'm not yet sure how often I'll use the data feature, and like the flexibility of dropping into the 250MB plan that AT&T offers. Plus, LTE is on a different frequency from 3G for AT&T, so it gives me a chance to see whether I should stick with AT&T when I get the LTE iPhone (5?) later this year, or consider making the switch to Verizon. AT&T's 3G is worthless in NYC (even if 5.1 makes my iPhone report it as "4G"). If LTE is the same way, then I'll return the iPad and get the Verizon one. It's the capacity, not the coverage, with AT&T. I get 4 bars of 3G in my office, but between 9:00-6:00 little goes through.

The only thing that has kept me from pre-ordering is that I'm waiting to see which of the two US wireless carriers will actually offer hotspot capabilities in their 4G iPad plans.

I am hoping (& betting) that Verizon steps up to the plate...this will (would) be a useful feature coupled with my MBAir.

Also, was anyone able to select upgrade in shipping method?? I assume that free delivery by March 16 means actual shipment earlier than the 16th? I was unable to change shipping method.

Did you miss that "the new iPad" is just the marketing term?

Haven't you had the chance to see the back of the new iPad?

The reason they use that phrase is to wean people off the notion of version numbers. Two months down the road this will just be "the iPad" (full stop). In fact, I'd be very surprised if the next iPhone isn't just the "the iPhone". From a marketing perspective, I think it's brilliant.

Interestingly on Apples own website on the iPad tab it's only iPad the graphics have trimmed the new ipad out and it's only down the bottom on the pre-order link that says the new iPad. I wonder if the Store will follow suit after the 16th and just call it the iPad.

Yes, they have usually shipped it out a few days in advance. With the iPhone 4S a few people got them a day early.

I think it's good that Apple is moving away from numbers in the product name.

It's sort of like the iPod Touch. There was never any "iPod Touch 3" or "iPod Touch 4". When you wanted to refer to a specific generation, you would just say just that or iPT 3 or iPT4, but it was really called iPod Touch each time.

iPad 3 is pretty cool. xD

This will be my first iPad too. The update is just enough to push me over my "wait until the tech is more mature and better value-for-money" barrier.

I think it was a mistake to drop the number from the iPad name. A lot of iPad sales go to people upgrading from a previous version to the new version. If it's just called the iPad from now one nobody will know you have the latest version and I think that takes away some of the cachet of owning the latest model.

The "must have the latest" brigade don't want to walk round with something that has "iPad 2" written on the back when there is an "iPad 3" out there. Take away the number and there is less pressure to upgrade which means less sales.

The iPod Touch doesn’t have a number and who upgrades that every year anymore. Not many people I suspect. The iPad is different to the MacBook or iMac which don’t have numbers. Very few people upgrade their computer every year no matter how good the refreshes are. With the iPad and iPhone however Apple has priced them in such a way as to encourage people to simply upgrade every year to get the latest must have version.

So the verdict on the name is "The new iPad?" We definitely can't just call it iPad, as we reference the original iPad all the time.

Yes we can. We can simply call it early 2012 iPad. It has been done for ages with Macs. late 2011 MBP, late 2010 MBA, mid 2011 iMac.

Nothing sinister really. It keeps the name clean and easy to remember. If Apple starts doing it with all iOS device including iPhone or iPod Touch. I really wouldn't mind at all.

iPad numbering never appeared on iPad body whatsoever. You dont see iPad 2 written on iPad 2 back, so the numbering system is .. by any means .. not a real part of the iPad itself. Same case with the iPhone, it's only written on outer packaging. Nothing really hard .. You can distinguish it by year of release. Just like Mac. Read my earlier post.

Could this be anymore of a shallow post?

Look I have the latest iPad !

How hard is that to get in your head that I have the latest and greatest iPad and I'm awesomer than you? ;)

Heavier or not, the iPad as a whole is too heavy for a reading device. It's more than that, so it's a compromise to live with, but for reading alone it's too heavy (and because of the size and weight distribution weights down on the holding hand even more).

It's actually perfectly balanced any way you hold it (center of gravity wise). Or, imperfectly, depending on the person...

Anyway, take a look at this: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=543017

I rarely hold the iPad while reading/surfing/email, or even while doing some gaming (depending on controls, of course). I can play Angry Birds fine while in that stand.

The built in 5MB iSight looks cheap. It doesn't take away much from the quality for the rest of the product, but come on 5MB. Why?

You're not supposed to use it as a primary capture device, that's the iPhone's job. You got your 264ppi, quad-core GPU, didn't lose battery life, barely gained size/weight, and kept the same price point. 5MP will give you HD video capture, no?

Not sure why you would want more, or how that is cheap.

I felt the Tim Cook intro would lead to something just a TAD more revolutionary. He's absolutely right, but in the wrong year: it is a PC supplanting desktops. I was on the edge of my seat for him to say something, like...

But, no. Figures. The moment Apple gets off its iAss and makes something like that, they shut down about every other desktop out there for 90% of the market, and conquer everything ever made.

Companies all have to make choices, and you don't know what the engineering logistics are there. Even if they could implement such features, I would imagine that they want to milk this growth as long as possible and have features to add on an annual basis for the next decade. Even with this, you're very silly (or just not thinking), because you said desktops. Desktops have been weakening, but the real thing a combination of faster storage, IO, and overall functionality as a standalone device would bring is a product that eats laptops. You'd still be quite a bit behind on ram and raw computing power available in stationary form factors, but laptops can already do the things you just mentioned. This would just place those things in a grab and go type device that does not require a stationary surface (and one that is bigger than a phone). Also you were on the edge of your seat:rolleyes:?

I just tried to place a pre-order and it took four times to get it completed! Wow... I imagine that this could be the quickest selling Apple, or any other, product ever...

After hours & hours of waiting, two calls to the bank to unblock my card....IT'S ORDERED!

White 4G iPad :)

UK Store seems to be slowly working then, the bank lady said she'd never seen so many Apple orders coming through!

Gorgeous screen indeed but ...

The pixels in the 2048 x 1536 display are, at regular arm’s length, completely indistinguishable: it’s only when you get up close that you can make them out.

Sorry slash gear but who the hell holds their iPad at arms length?

According to Everymac.com, there are 31 listings for the 15 inch MacBookPro to date. I prefer device name and year of manufacture if needed to MBP 15.25.

Exactly. "Early 2012 iPad." There's going to be some kind of differentiation. I also like this. It's like how we refer to desktops and notebooks. Numbering is a bit tedious, especially once we get to higher generations. It's a clean naming system.

Also, is the back painted or aluminum? It looks painted from pictures. Seems like a major step down in build quality and aesthetics from my original iPad.

Why aren't people asking the important quetsions? Since we have a new double resolution screen, what graphics chip does it have, and how good is it? Whats the ram? Besides the processor, the most important hardware is ram. So is it finally 1 GB? And how does the screen look? I know its double the resolution, but that doesn't tell me if the screen looks good or not, contrast wise, color wise, and brightness wise. Now, waiting for answers....:)

Such a gorgeous screen and an amazing update this year.
What's amazing to me is that you can blow through your entire monthly data plan in fifteen minutes. What happened to all those unlimited data plans that were going to allow Apple's iCloud to become a serious storage platform? In an era of ever increasing resolutions and ever shrinking data plans, why are we expected to settle for local storage that is less than a tenth of what the PC era gave us? Each of us has different expectations as to what makes a great tablet, but I don't recall reading post after post and thread after thread about how bad the resolution was or how slow the processor is. So why is Apple so busy fixing what isn't even broken and yet so hesitant to address (or even acknowledge) what people are actually upset about?

Yep. It takes longer and longer for these larger and larger files to load. Gimme the option for 250gigs like my old-school iPod an send me on my merry, largely data-free way.
