I'm just becoming increasingly more concerned because the Mac laptop line continues to lose features and capabilities, all in the misguided spirit of becoming thinner and thinner.
Why do so many people think every Mac has to be all things for all people?
It's not marketed for our kind of consumers. It is for those simple minded people who do one thing at a time.
Who's going to buy this thing?
HDMI, power, USB for external devices, Thunderbolt... All going through one port.
This seems like a Mac this is no things to no people, though. Who's going to buy this thing?
Okay, let me know when the MBP goes away and I'll believe you.
People had similar complaints about the MBA when they came out.
I'm just becoming increasingly more concerned because the Mac laptop line continues to lose features and capabilities, all in the misguided quest of becoming thinner and thinner.
frankly, I have the 2012 rMBP and its a spiders nest on my desk, and I only have a charger, external audio interface and a disk plugged in.Great, only one port on the laptop.
I can't wait to see the spider's nest of cables and plugs that some people are going to need with this one.
HDMI, power, USB for external devices, Thunderbolt... All going through one port.
Who thought this would be a good idea? Oh, right. Jony...
In what way? It's gaining features
* The ability to transfer data at stupid fast speeds without resorting to esoteric and very expensive solutions.
* High resolution screens
I am guessing your main gripes are memory upgrades and a DVD drive? Not everyone has the same needs as you. You can either go and buy the product that meets your needs, or cry on forums. The choice is yours.
How would one charge and have plugged into an external display, at the same time? And, ideally, have a USB hub attached as well? Does this USB spec support something like a dock that also passes power?
Looks beautiful except for the large screen bezel. I actually like the design of the new Dell XPS laptops in terms of keyboard, trackpad, and screen geometry/placement. Still not as nice overall as Apple laptops but better in those ways.
1. Most people looking for this kind of laptop won't use an external.
2. DVD...seriously? You mentioned that seriously?
3. Wireless or USB adapter.
4. What USB device are you going to connect to?
5. You'd import your pictures from your iPhone like most users would.
I do not consider the loss of USB ports, ethernet ports, Thunderbolt ports, and optical drive as gaining features.
And you can still use your USB devices with this new Macbook. I know it's shocking that Apple didn't design this computer specifically for you.1. Okay, I can accept that...esp since if I were connecting to an external I wouldn't mind using an adapter.
2. Lot of DVD's still being sold and rented. Not so crazy...external superdrive is acceptable but now incompatible without an adapter.
3. Huh?
4. I use a USB mouse, I have a USB printer. Sure, I could go buy an all new printer and bluetooth mouse...but that's just dumb.
5. You're a moron. Not everyone uses their iPhone as their only source of camera. I have a DSLR. Have a GoPro for video. Neither have wireless.
I really hope Apple has the guts to backtrack on this awful sounding keyboard on the next version of this machine.
Even if it has to be *gasp* thinner.
Apple thought no backlight on the keys was a good idea once. They were wrong. They seem to be wrong here.
HDMI, power, USB for external devices... All going through one port.
lol. We are not losing thunderbolt ports on the MBAs or MBPs. Let's come back to this discussion when the Skylake rMBP is released with Thunderbolt 3. This computer is designed for a purpose and Apple felt that Thunderbolt was not a necessary feature for the target market. The good news is that the TB3 port is also thinner, so it may find itself back on the 2nd gen Macbook, or it may not. Apple likes to differentiate their products in specific ways. Should all ports and all features be on all products?
* You have not lost USB ports with this new Macbook. You have a shiny new USB-C port.
* USB to Ethernet adaptors exist and can be used with this product
* An optical drive is not a feature, it is a relic.
First you tried to insinuate that "losing features" is endemic to all Macbooks, now you're concentrating on this new product. It would help me to understand what you're actually trying to say instead of trying to throw everything and seeing what sticks to justify your ramblings.

...and where is the 17" MB Pro retina with Broadwell and @ 75% lighter and 80% slimmer?
...I bet they would sell boatloads if they decide to bring it back @ this year's WWDC or in the fall.

Had you read my post you'd see I pointing out thing you CANNOT do with this laptop out of the box...meaning without purchasing extra stuff.
