So, compared to the new 13" retina MacBookPro which also has the force click trackpad, this has a smaller, lower resolution screen, half the cpu cores running at less than half the clock speed, and 1/5th the ports... and it costs more?

This is for people who need to carry around their laptops all the time(college students, journalists, etc). For those people, paying a bit more for portability is very justifiable.

Disagreeing with the direction a company is taking that I have invested time and money into isn't blind hatred, buddies. It's called being critical. Just because I'm not blinded by Apple's shiny PR doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan of the company and products than you are, and any less deserving of using their products.

It simply means I'm not chugging down the Kool-Aid.

I'm sure your investment has served you well, but do you honestly see Apple meeting your needs in the future? Better to jump ship now before your investment hits the metaphorical iceberg.

And none of us are blinded by Apple's PR. I guess I can't speak for the other people in this thread, but I keep buying Apple products because they do exactly what I need in an elegant way. That said, Apple products don't meet all my needs, hence why I still have my old Acer laptop laying around, plus a cheap but well-built 11" Thinkpad x140e.

So no, it has nothing to do with Kool-Aid, and everything to do with putting your money where your mouth is.

I sure hope there is some adapter to make it act like a MagSafe power connector. It will be unusable around my house without one with all the dogs :)

People have already forgotten the cost of the original Macbook Air?

The people this was made for will be using some sort of wireless for video, MIGHT care about a USB key, have no idea what Thunderbolt is, and we all still have to plug in power.

Why do so many people think every Mac has to be all things for all people?

Or, you know, only want to plug in one thing when they get to the office.

Naturally, this isn't a great device for people who carry external drives, etc. with them. On the other hand, if you mostly use external devices at the office, you can plug them into your external monitor and just plug your laptop in when you get in. For that use case, it's pretty slick -- the natural evolution of the current Thunderbolt displays and, since it's USB-C, you won't even be locked into an Apple docking station.

I'm mostly disappointed in a few people and their comments about how if I don't like the direction Apple is going with their laptops that I should pack up ship and head somewhere else, and that if I want to stay with Apple I have to keep my mouth shut and deal with them deeming current tech to be obsolete so they can continue making their computers thinner.

Except this new MacBook doesn't seem to support Thunderbolt.

Huh?

1. Okay, I can accept that...esp since if I were connecting to an external I wouldn't mind using an adapter.

2. Lot of DVD's still being sold and rented. Not so crazy...external superdrive is acceptable but now incompatible without an adapter.

3. Huh?

4. I use a USB mouse, I have a USB printer. Sure, I could go buy an all new printer and bluetooth mouse...but that's just dumb.

5. You're a moron. Not everyone uses their iPhone as their only source of camera. I have a DSLR. Have a GoPro for video. Neither have wireless.

2. Congrats on still buying DVDs. Good for you. The rest of the world is moving toward digital.

4. Fancy you having a USB mouse and printer! They still work, right? And you're not required to buy a new MB, right?

5. You have a fancy DSLR but you want to buy a low-end laptop? C'mon.

Yeah, things are getting pretty heated in here. I'm gonna take a step back from the rhetoric and just say this- based on what your stated wants and needs are, and what I gather to be your perspective on Apple trends, Apple isn't going anywhere that you want to go. Even down to the last sentence in your post, "deal with them deeming current tech to be obsolete so they can continue making their computers thinner." This is and has been Apple's way of doing business ever since they left the floppy drive out of the original iMac. If anything, they've "doubled down" (to borrow a Cookism) on cutting "legacy" hardware and software.

You can buy whatever you want from any manufacturer, and you'll never see me telling you otherwise. But I just think you'd be much happier if you began to shift your ecosystem away from Apple and towards other companies. In this case, I believe the grass might just be greener on the other side for you.

Does it heat a lot? That's the only thing i want to know since it's fanless

Same here. Depending on how easy it is to handle, along with the screen size and the heat factor, I might ditch my iPAD. It looks to be a MSFT Surface 3 killer of sorts at this price point in my opinion. In as much the battery life is about the same as an iPAD. I will have to look hands on to see!

Unlike the iPhones, I've never bought any of Apple's laptops at launch. I'm going to get this to replace my 2011 MBA.. do the stores readily have stock of them when they come out? There aren't going to be those crazy lines of people waiting 3 days beforehand, are there?

Sorry

That bezel makes me wish to be sick

Without anything other than simply looking at the machine the one thing about it that smack me round the face and SHOUT horrid is those ghastly giant bezels on the screen,
It clashes so badly with the edge to edge keyboard

God Apple what a horrid design. What is up with you and dam bezels :(

How can Dell make this:http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/mid...433a/201466997/Dell+XPS+13+2015_fullbleed.jpg

And yet Apple fails with that horrid look ?

...and where is the 17" MB Pro retina with Broadwell and @ 75% lighter and 80% slimmer?
...I bet they would sell boatloads if they decide to bring it back @ this year's WWDC or in the fall.

No, they really wouldn't. The fact is that if there was a market for that class of machine, they'd be making them already.

Sigh

You do know that analysts are paid to "best guess", right?

Besides, Blu-ray burners are still expensive and not all that universal for PC's

CD/DVD drives are much more universal and circulated.

So were cassette players, VHS players, floppy disc drives...

And Blu-Ray isn't as big of a jump from DVD as VHS to DVD was, so its reign will be even shorter.

Apple has never even included a Blu-Ray player. They skipped it completely.

Do you really think the future of media *isn't* digital, and that optical media won't continue to become less popular?

Pardon me if I missed something but why would you buy this when you could just get a MacBook Air with the eventual retina display?

Right?

Do you really think the future of media *isn't* digital, and that optical media won't continue to become less popular?

That's not what I'm saying at all.

The future of media is obviously all digital and media-less. But we're not even close to being all the way there yet, despite what Apple tells you to justify removing optical drives from their computers.

No Ports? GTFO

Beautiful machine, but it's form over function. This hunt for thinness is just ***** stupid. A $1,500 computer that has effectively ZERO ports. WTF? I'd rather get the Dell XPS 13. Just as thin and actually includes PORTS! What the F is the point of thinness if I have to carry around a bunch of extra dongles just to make the damn thing worthwhile? Expensive dongles that will eventually get lost?
