If I ever needed a second laptop to compliment my 13inch rMBP - then this is perfect!

But why would you need a second laptop? The only cases that make sense for using this new macbook are ones where an iPad would do just as well if not better for half the price.

What?!

That's Apple's PR team at work there, doing what they do. :)

You think Apple PR is fooling me into thinking that I enjoy a thinner, lighter laptop that doesn't have an optical drive?

You know there's only so much space in a computer, right? You know optical drives are pretty big, right?

I'm not sure what your deal here is, except something like DVDOPTICALMEDIAFOREVER!!!

----------

Sorry I keep my phone, drawing tablet, charger, and headphones plugged in most of the time.

You act like the only thing people do on their computers is use the internet.

Then you wouldn't be in the market for this computer.

I'd buy one of these over an iPad, but then I saw that it's more than £1000.. I'll wait for a Skylake Space Grey MBP.

480p? WTF? I wouldn't mind that so much if I could plug a better webcam in, but if I do that then I can't charge the device...

I'm saying Apple's PR is fooling you into thinking a laptop functions better without an optical drive, yes.

Thinner and lighter isn't everything. The laptop still has to maintain an aura of functionality and compatibility with the world.

And, no, optical drives are not that big these days. Apple is simply on a quest to have the thinnest and lightest laptops, at any cost. If they can convince people it's obsolete, more power to them. It'll help them sell thinner laptops.

And you can still do that via a hub with this machine. You do realise though that not everyone uses their computer exactly like you, right?

Okay, and?

Didn't you JUST say that the optical drive-less MBP was one of the best laptops you've ever owned?

Wife and I haven't bought a DVD or CD in five years. Somehow we're still employed and connected.

Didn't you JUST say that the optical drive-less MBP was one of the best laptops you've ever owned?

Yup. Doesn't mean I don't miss the functionality though.

I would definitely be happier with a rMBP that was a tiny bit thicker and included an optical drive so i wouldn't have to carry one around with me all the time.

Huh?

So the computer was SO good that you bought it without an optical drive, and then chose to carry an external around?

What is it you do that requires optical media?

Then the obvious solution is this laptop is not for you. Easy.

I think its becoming more and more obvious that its time to show Jony Ives the door at apple. This whole thing is clearly made to feed his ego.

Yeah I was excepting the keyboard to be not so great, mainly because of such a low travel. That's kinda unfortunate, but it does look beautiful!

I'm personally not a fan of the Retina Display, and I know It'll probably shock some people, but I think it really depends on your usage scenario. As a Web Designer I found designing for lower resolutions kind of impossible since Adobe Photoshop now has Retina Support everything is so small that you just can't see the little details without zooming in constantly, even then it just becomes a blocky mess :p..

What do you do that requires needing an optical drive on the go so much?

I'm a system administrator, so I read and burn lots of ISO's for servers and workstations. Also lots of drivers are still distributed on CD's.

Casual consumers might not all still have a use for optical media on a daily basis, but corporations and businesses definitely still do. And it feels like Apple is slowly alienating this part of their loyal market by removing features like ethernet ports and optical media drives.

My conclusion on rMB

I think it's a great concept and good start for a new line of MacBook.. BUT leave where it is.
Right now it's extremely overpriced for what it offers.
New keyboard and retina are the only good things.
USB-C is a good technology but as every other technology, when you're the first you have also to remember about the others.. Right now we have too many USB 2.0-3.0 devices as keys, external HDD, cables etc. Having an adapter for everything it's an uncomfortable solution.
480p camera is a step backwards, not big deal but I don't see why you should have a better camera on a phone.
Maybe a 1099 price would be a better placement on the market. 400$ for a fancy look? Apple is loosing its mind (aka 10k smartwatch)

Curious to see if the iPhone 6S will have a USB-C lightning cable..

Nerds love to think their technology needs represent the needs of the public. They usually do not.

Very true. I find the complaints in these threads bewildering. It's like soccer mums complaining that they can't fit their 3 kids and 4 friends into the new Toyota Aygo and this clearly shows that Toyota will no longer be making any MPVs and Toyota does not care about the soccer mums! Then you have some others complaining that this new Aygo is nothing like the Tundra and they won't be able to tow their boat with it.

Oh, c'mon

Apple has never been about the business market, it's long been consumer focused.

But if you bought a MBP without an optical drive for a job that requires you to work with legacy equipment, you bought the wrong tool to do what you do.

guess there's no reason to see it, try it, consider it, now that we have these expert opinions.

these forums, once filled with information, questions (and answers), and useful discussion, has now (mostly) become a place for whiners, unrequested opinions, rants.

so it goes... :D

That's absolutely not true at all.

Also they continue to provide support for connecting iOS devices to Exchange servers. Saying they've never been about the business market is just plain silly.

Sooo....

If I have headphones in, they have to come out while I plug a thumb drive in? Which then has to come out if I want to power it? Which has to come out if I want to use the headphones again?

Having acquired a 2013 MBA recently and loving it, I was looking forward to seeing what Apple would come up with. I use this on the move mainly for access to the internet and MS office/Keynote, with a portable USB3 drive for my data (protected, not going into the cloud.) and working in three different offices during the week - the portability is a massive bonus for me and I love the keyboard on this, it is the best laptop keyboard I have ever used.

Looks like the new Macbook has the portability covered but not necessarily the keyboard (would have to try it). Biggest reason for me NOT wanting it is that it doesn't allow charging AND using a USB drive or hooking up an external screen/projector at the same time. Frankly, the concept behind this new Macbook is too much like a Chromebook for me to take it serious, despite being gorgeous.
