So I see the 3Gs as Apple's low-end model especially since you can still buy it new.

So that's how you get a Mac cheaper than a Dell :)

LOL! I love it. True though. Very true. And the 3GS still performs, too. Although currently, I believe Apple computers have a better shelf life than their iproducts at the moment. This may change with their A4/A5 processors being able to handle more aggressive programs. The iPhone 4 may last 3-4 yrs before being retired.. not that I'll wait that long! iPhone 6 here we come!

Overhyped piece of crap

thats every other tablet out there.

SO gonna get an ipad till it hurts :p

Yeah, I would definately get an iPhone (3G or later) if I actually needed a smartphone. I'm 14, why do I need something that advanced and portable? A lot of people at my school have iPhone 4s (of course most of them broke because they brought them camping without cases), and they mostly use them for games...

512 MB of RAM is a let down. A bigger device should be more powerful than a phone...

Ram isn't everything. It all depends on how Apple is managing the ram. And since its faster then the ram on the A4, it would perform better then the same amount in the iPhone 4.

If it mattered a lot, apple would have put it. One needs to remember that apple is guaranteeing a fast and responsive tablet and that is pretty much what the reviewers are experiencing. Apple clearly is not interested in “my RAM is bigger than your RAM” contest, and that is why they don't talk about CPU hertz or the RAM size publicly. But they do want to give you the best tangible experience with a balanced spec. For all I know the bottleneck in the current design could be elsewhere and perhaps there wasn't much difference between 1gb or 512mb to warrant the upgrade yet. Given all the rich apps that are out there, iPad1 never felt sluggish, even though it features only 256mb.

This is Apple folks.
Yes it is. Aging old creaky Apple. As conservative as the GOP... how utterly sad. Tiny displays on iPhones. Users afraid of change unless it's Uncle Steve's idea, then they fall to their knees & worship. What a dog & pony show.

iP4 definitely needs a case. It feels great in your hands "naked" but you just "KNOW" its doomed if you keep it like that. Also, forgetting the naysayers.. the 3G and 3GS still run almost all the apps in the app store. It's not like they are useless. Yes, they lose some of the benefits of OS upgrades, but over time everything does.

Sure. I expected 1GB of RAM in my best hope. But let's face the fact: Apple still has virtually NO competition in this market. When Android wasn't so big back in 2009 Apple gave us the 3GS. So the iPad 2 is the 3GS. But it's better than the 3GS because it is thinner and lighter.

xoom xoom xoom

iPad got lighter... whoopdy-do. It also put the front camera in the most awkward position when you hold it (behind your hand). Not sure why they made it dual-core, as not much is going on at once.

How very true! Don't we all so wish apple was actually a trailblazing innovator like nokia or htc or samsung or Dell. What are they doing with all the money? They can easily put a 7 inch screen on the phone - won't that be just awesome, and if only it also came with a slide out keyboard! We can only wish

You want a Xoom?

I won't even go into an Android-iOS fight, but I'll tell you that the Xoom is another product that takes a shot at Apple's stuff, and it WILL fail. Like everything other than the Motorola Droid, which is losing.

WiiDSmoker is a Droid fan, I've seen him before. Or anti-Apple?

RAM is definately not everything. In fact, the best way to make a device fast is to program it well without wasting resources. Windows wastes resources, making the 3 GHz CPU 4 GB RAM Dells at my school waaaay slower than my iMac, not to mention the clunkyness and overall stupidity of the OS.

What trail is Dell blazing? They've been doing the same thing forever: making cheap PCs like a computer-Walmart (which is fine for Windows users). I don't see much innovation there... HTC is the only one you listed doing anything "trailblazing", and they are blazing off a cliff.

In fact, HTC is actually mimicking Apple, so they are barely innovating. Apple made the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and the first personal computer with a GUI in 1983.

Or were you being sarcastic............?

lol it doesn't take a genius to realize Motorola wasted however much money on that Super Bowl ad, but let me be honest here: I can do whatever I want with android (basically), on iOS I can't really. Until iOS gets itself a tablet UI (not the POS grid UI), a working filesystem, and Adobe flash (or if Adobe succeeds with its flash-to-HTML5 thing), I really can't justify touching the iPad. However, I think it's awesome that Apple made those smart cases and HDMI-out.

I would have more respect for the reviewers if they said the obvious:

"We recommend you wait for the iPad 3, because the iPad is still just a big iPod Touch, despite it being the best performing tablet on the market right now."

Lol!

Needed 1 GB ram minimum.

They're not going to lay all of their cards on the table at once. The iPad 3 will get 1GB of RAM. iPad 2 will sell in huge numbers, the competition will heat up and then it's time for iPad 3. They have to have a carrot to dangle in front of everyone's nose.

LOL again.

I think it is a nice follow up device. Could it be better? Of course. Does it need to be better to sell umpteen million until the next model? No.

I also find it amusing how so many made fun of the cameras on the Xoom and how useless they were and how stupid it was to include them and now they are complaining that the ones on the new iPad aren't good enough.

RAM is very crucial in a mobile multi-tasking device.

Umm, the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM.

The iPad 2 has 512MB of RAM "and" a dual-core processor. How is the iPhone faster again?

They have equal RAM but the iPad 2 trumps the IP4 in the processor area.

Agreed. Wish Apple could've used stronger cameras.

Are there really people out there who want to take a picture with an iPad? I get video chat i suppose, but I don't think they've made cameras this large in decades.

Maybe I'm just missing a use case?

I tried to get it from Cydia, but the one I got was a piece of @#$%. It never worked properly...

Why did Apple pull it again? Also, in my opinion, Apple should have a "beta" section of the App Store for nerds who like to get stuff before it comes out. The Droid store (or whatever it is) has betas. Of course, it sucks so much in general that it's better just to get the iPhone and wait a little longer for stuff to be released :D

VLC was pulled due to licensing issues, but it was pulled by the developer not by Apple.

People read books on iPhones and iPods, so nothing would surprise me.

Ive used a xoom. It is a piece of #$%@. Better specs.. sure (barely). Frankly, honeycomb sux, at least in this iteration. There is nothing about having a Full OS experience I want on a tablet. Crap: on my computer I just want to run my apps and be done with it. Guess what. iOS does that, too.
