Read the specs. It's a significant upgrade.

What did you want, a strobe light? A cheese grater? Speed holes?

Matter transportation. And it should be integrated with Google maps. I don't think I need to explain any further, I'm sure you get the idea.

Agreed, plus video conferences ???? Really AT&T can't even let us send pictures or video via MMS:rolleyes: video conferences come on people what do you think this is 2009:eek:

At least you know the limitation of AT&T. Until either this network gets caught up with the 21st Century or Apple drops AT&T for another carrier that will ALLOW video.

Seems people here forgot already AT&T nixing the SlingPlayer streaming your own TV on their network. This told me that until Apple drops AT&T or AT&T gets it together we will never see iChat video (unless it is restricted to WiFi only).

What other U.S. carrier has a larger GSM network deployed?

Verizon and ATT will start migrating to LTE w/i a year or so but nothing now.

Apple would be insane to migrate to Verizon's dead end network technology as that technology is EOL.

Is not Apple stuck with ATT for the short run?

you know, it took me 1/2 a second to realize which app was missing from the "all apple" home screen since they are adding two apps where there was previously only space for one more. The inclusion of voice recorder and the compass has apparently bumped contacts to page 2 (or has it been removed and fully incorporated in the phone app since search was the main feature).

Maybe its OCD nerdiness, but I always prided in keeping page 1 pure and pushing all downloaded apps to page 2+.

speed holes AHAHAHA ....i just about fell out of my chair when i read that one. im looking forward to this phone, im completely fine with the upgrades. nowadays its too hard to chase the speed of technology improvements anyways. you can buy the 'new' thing one day, and a month later there is an upgrade to it. be happy with what you have, and that you have the money to afford an iphone. :D

I can't help but wonder if the oleophobic coating is going to become problematic. The glass display has proven to be very scratch resistant. Now a coating has been applied (vacuum deposition?) that will not be as scratch resistant (guessing). Might this become one of those "great idea on paper" but in real life turns out to be a design mistake.

Also - I am wondering if the Power Support screen film can still be used over the coating

This is what I think is going to happen. Plus, does everyone know that LTE is a data network, like 3G or EVDO? You can't do voice over LTE unless you do away with minutes and charge strictly for data. Can you imagine a data-only/VOIP iPhone rate plan on Verizon? And people think the iPhone plans are expensive now...

It is interesting how there is no designation that it is a 3G S, so if you have a 16 GB 3G S and your friend has a 16GB 3G and you both put them on a table you won't be able to tell them apart. I guess Apple does that with all their products though, all iPods say iPod with no other designator of type or generation.

So the story here...

1. If your on the 1st gen do you all feel like you should upgrade to this one or wait for the next one?

Just wonder input on this.

The model number is different, and the text for the word iPhone is the same silver color as the apple logo.

Kinda funny how tons of 3g owners are bitching about how much the 3gs didn't change and how disappointed they are, but yet 9,000+ of you guys signed a petition to ATT that you should be able to upgrade without paying full price.

Apple isn't going to re-invent the iphone every year. Look at any computer brand.... How much do they really change year to year??? They get a slight performance boost, and maybe a bigger monitor. It's not the norm to upgrade your computer every year. I've had my notebook for over 2 years now, and its running just fine. I think people are forgetting what the iphone is, and completely disregarding the fact that companies such as ATT can't just give stuff away, and that EVERY CELL PHONE PROVIDER REQUIRES CONTRACTS. That's how they stay in business.

Should Apple give you a new notebook every year at a discount price just because you buy one every year??? You guys act as if you can't buy the 3gs. You can buy it.... You just have to pay full price! Just like 99.99% of any other electronics that SLIGHTLY change year to year. Go to BB and bitch that you want a new 47" LCD at 50% off because you're a loyal Samsung owner. They'd laugh at you! Oh and btw that new Samsung LCD that looks almost identical to last years model is still going to sell like a hotcake.

Stop bitching and come back to reality!!! Some of you guys are funny!!! You'll defend Apple and the iphone on a Sprint forum as if you were a part owner, but yet at home base you trash the whole concept as if the 3gs and ATT killed your first born.

That **** gets confusing for a guy like me that just ordered a 3gs and is about to pay the early cancellation fee to Sprint.

I find it hard to believe that Best Buy has not made any announcement about the 3GS. It goes on sale in a week!!

Best Buy is always behind on technology. They never get products out from anyone when they are released. I think they like to get rid of old inventory first. I noticed CompUSA was the same way.

The iPod form factor changes a lot more though.

Video Camera Autofocus

There might be an obvious answer to my question, but will the autofocus feature work with the video function activated, or will it more or less just go to infinity and lock it there?

If it does work can you basically achieve a quick rack focus by tapping from one subject in the frame to another?

Or if it is just always on, are we going to see lots of hunting issues like other low end camcorders searching for a subject?

Guess we'll have to wait 'till we know what camera model/manufacturer went in to it...

I can't believe some of the posts complaining about what is NOT in the new iPhone -- HD video recording, for instance.

My God, the iPhone didn't even exist a little over two years ago, and now you want an iPhone with HD video recording?

Actually, I want my iPhone to teleport me to Paris and back in 10 seconds or less; I also want it to fix dinner for me (duck confit would be nice for tonight); and I'd like it to improve the hitting of the Giants -- but some things are possible and some just aren't -- at least for now. (I predict iPhone teleporting before improved Giant hitting).

I still watch the '07 keynote in amazement. The entire cell phone market has been transformed by the iPhone. Do really think the Palm Pre would exist today if Apple didn't introduce the iPhone?

I still have a first gen iPhone and am perfectly happy with it. But then again, I thought the introduction of a PC with a "hard drive" in it was overkill. Geez, two 5 1/4" floppy drives is good enough, isn't it? I guess I'm a little more patient than others.

Actually, an expresso maker would be brilliant.:p

espresso. ORIGIN 1940s: from Italian (caffè) espresso, literally ‘pressed out (coffee).’

the often-occurring variant spelling expresso —and its pronunciation |ikˈspresō|—is incorrect and was probably formed by analogy with express.

Man the 3G S looks like a great upgrade, the main attraction for me would be the increase in speed and the larger hard drive. Unfortunately the deal I have with my service provider is for 24 months so no iPhone upgrade for me for another year... I wonder if by then we will have a 64 GB version with a camera on the screen side too (For Video Calls) my sony ericsson was doing this already about 3 years ago... I was quite suprised that the new iPhone didn't have it yet especially considering the user friendlyness of the skype app.

Well looking forward to the 3.0 software update and I guess I will have to make do with that until next year.

:rolleyes::apple:

All this, excluding processor should be available for 3G owners. It's all software.

Apple seems to be playing games, and I no longer enjoy playing Apple's game.

__________________________________________________________________

yep, it sucks, but hey, as long as the consumer is willing to part with the money, why shouldnt apple keep ripping us off???

apart from the processor speed, what is actually new about the 3GS compared tot he 3G?
You guys are both 100% wrong and making rather dumb comments without even checking into it.

*Everything* (software-wise) that the 3Gs has will be on the 3G also.

The only things that don't make it are things that are related to the hardware (like voice control). There is no artificial limiting going on, there is no scam, and pretty much everything that is on the 3Gs is on the 3G.

The regular 3G won't be able to do Voice Control or Video recording because it just isn't powerful enough to do them (memory and processor speed), and it can't do the digital compass because ... it doesn't have a digital compass inside FFS!

No one is ripping you off and neither of you know what you're talking about.

I don't know about it being perfect. Things that it will eventually need:

-multitasking
-revamped UI
-API for integration between apps with some kind of folder structure to download and store files
-OLED screen
-HD video camera
-flash support (I don't like flash but it's going to have to be there sooner or later)
-front facing camera

When it has those things (which will probably take 4 or 5 years), it will be the perfect device. Right now mobile phones are where PC's were in the late 90s/early 2000 when specs meant everything. Eventually we will get to a place where the specs don't really mean anything because we have all the power and features we need. It will solely be about the experience.
You are so wrong on some of this. :)

1) iPhone already multitasks
2) revamped UI? Why?
3) API for integration (actually already in iPhone OS 3.0)
4) OLED screen (almost certainly in next version of iPod and next iPhone)
5) HD video camera (next version likely)
6) Flash support (not necessary and very unlikely)
7) Front facing camera (not necessary until next version, but likely)

Overall, while I think most of your points are subjective and therefore show more what *you* personally would like to see rather than any inevitable new features (Flash for instance), I do agree that there is a major new hardware revision in the near future.

It seems to me that the current 3G is the "perfected" version of the iPhone in that it answers every hardware and software "missing feature" request that we have seen on the forums and teh internets over the last couple of years. It seems very likely to me therefore that the next version of the iPhone will be one that is seriously different. It will likely have Apple's home-made ARM processor in it, it will likely be able to support HD video, and will likely also have video conferencing in it.

IMO this current (3Gs) version, is both a "holding pattern" type of phone, as well as being simultaneously the pinnacle or "perfected" version of the basic original iPhone concept. So in fact I agree with you that there are more hardware revisions to come, even if I disagree with your list above.

I don't feel like I should upgrade. I want to.

If you wait then you're always waiting.
