only buy the new iphone if you dont own one or is using the iphone 1st gen. There is no point in the new iphone, you can get video recording from cydia. Why spend your hard earned money just for a little speed improvement? I don't see the point at all. keep the money to get a new laptop or something else. The new iphone is not worth it for iphone 3g owners to upgrade. Im not upgrading. I will next year becaues it will be a significant upgrade for sure over the 3g phone im using right now. =)

Glad you asked. I've been with 1st Gen since day One. I live in San Diego and the EDGE connection is very good. Calls are great, connectivity is great. I use WiFi where ever I can, just like anyone. Here is my main reason for not jumping on the 3G or 3GS train just yet:

My AT&T wireless bill would go up $15.00 per month - data costs from EDGE to 3G would go up 10, and I'd have to pay 5 bucks for 200 texts, where now my texts are included.

What am I missing by NOT going 3GS, especially since I qualify for the best pricing now that my contract is nearly up?

Improved Performance (I'm happy with my current performance - it would have to be a MAJOR performance improvement to justify)
Built In Video Camera w/Editing (Nice, but I don't care)
3 Megapixel Camera (up from 2 - I have a nicer camera anyway)
Voice Control (My car dials numbers for me, for the rest, I have fingers)
Compass (A fascinating and somewhat useful ability, not a deal breaker)
16GB of space (I haven't even used up my current 8GB - I rotate play lists)
Color Choice of White (meh)

What do I GET on my 1st Gen iPhone come next week?

Cut, Copy, Paste / Spotlight / Landscape Keyboard / Voice Memos

Of course, for anyone who has been sitting on the fence for two years, now would be a wonderful time to jump into the iPhone pool. For me, let's see what next years' model will bring. ;)

This 1st gen iPhone owner agrees wholeheartedly with the above....:D

This 1st gen iPhone owner is tired of crawling along at EDGE speeds (and no GPS) and will be upgrading this time around, but will be doing it with his wife's line (she'll get the old iPhone) to save me an upgrade for next year. :)

A little speed improvement, huh? So you must have had the chance to use a 3GS, and you've found it's only a little speed improvement?

Until the 3GS is released, I don't think anyone, besides people who have used one, can comment on the upgraded performance. But based on the new specs, I'd hardly call it a little speed improvement.

Agreed. I don't know if this is a "must have" upgrade for 3G owners or not, but to pooh-pooh it as an insignificant update seems naive. Double the system RAM (assumed, not confirmed), a significantly faster CPU, a significantly faster GPU...I think this will prove to be a very nice update indeed.

Me, I'm just looking forward to being able to play Tap Tap Revenge without any lag (I hope).

Piece? Uh, no.

That word doesn't make sense in that context. The nelson guy was using 'peace' in the same context as when in a wedding they say "speak now or forever hold your peace."

One "says (or speaks) his piece" but "holds his peace".

Saying one's piece is like giving someone a "piece of your mind"; in this context piece is synonymous with part. Holding one's peace is using peace in the sense of freedom from dissension, dispute, or disagreement, i.e silence:

this is your last chance to object—from now on don't make trouble over this: hold your peace

I'm a first gen iPhone owner and I'm on the fence on upgrading as well, mainly the stupid $15 increase in the monthly plan. However I have thought it thoroughly and here is what will benefit me the most:

* When I'm at a party or someplace where I have the opportunity to play music through the headphone jack I can actually do it and not be like oh crap I didn't bring the headphone adapter.

* GPS, with the upcoming tomtom software, I can ditch my Garmin nuvi 350 which has outdated maps anyway, so that frees up some space in my glove compartment - i have the beanbag mount cause I'm in CA

* Upgraded audio speakers. So I can finally use the Speakerphone and not have to have the room super quiet, and I can finally hear my ring tone in a normal environment.

* Upgraded camera /w video. Not that important but at least I'd like to know if I'm in a situation where if I see something awesome I can record it and submit it to the media.

* Voice command. Again not too important but if it works well, it'll help cut down on accidently dialing someone or fumbling around while trying to dial someone on the road.

* 32 GB , double the RAM and increased processor speed...nuff said!

Plus, my first gen iPhone has developed a white haze in the upper right corner which is noticeable on dark backgrounds. So I can't wait, just 1 more week!!!

I'm upgrading as well!

The 1st gen iPhone works just fine but this is what I want:
  • finally I can use this thing as an iPod and hook it up to ordinary 3.5mm connectors!!!!! such as my Etymotic earplugs, and every connector at some party!!!
  • GPS, finally! Geocaching + Navigation Software etc etc. can't wait
  • camera usable for snapshots. The old cam just sucks since there was no autofocus. I used to take tons of snapshots of papers, dates, stuff to remember with my k750i (sony) but the apple iphone cam sucked badly, totally unusable!
  • longer battery life is welcome!
  • voice control sounds awesome.... i only wonder if it'll understand anything besides english. Not that I can't speak it but there is no correct pronunciation for german names in english, so I'm probably in for a surprise!

I wish I had someone to take my old phone and get an upgrade.. I only have a mother who doesn't know how to use a simple Nokia 6300!

I reallly want this new iPhone will come in so very handy when travelling europe with the maps and compass etc...

Just need the money!

Upgrading to a 3G S is a no-brainer if you're a 3G owner. After selling your 3G on CL or eBay, you'll either break even or make money. I'm buying a 32 GB for $299 and already have a buyer lined up for my 16 GB for $350.

And I'd hardly call 2x faster "a little speed improvement"

i just hope you know that the unlimited dataplans in the US do not cover 3G usage in EU????

I'm in the UK :) Live in england. Thanks for the heads up! Any ideas if I would be able to use the plan in the rest of the EU as I'm already in england? BEST BE!

Question for Switzerland residents: how much do I have to pay on average to cancel my contract with Sunrise or other carriers? I wanna move to Swisscom and get the new iPhone...I can't stand Sunrise without an iPhone anymore!

If you're in a 12-month-contract, sunrise's ETF is 360.-
For a two-year-contract, it's 540.-

Luckily, I was able to order my 3GS just in time for the expiration date of my contract with them. A shame really, since I was quite happy with sunrise.

you guys forgot our first Gen. doesn't have GPS! I'm really looking forward to that, (car sometimes, but more Geotagging, geocaching, mountaineering). I was gonna get a GPS a while ago but did not because I knew I'd get me the next gen iPhone...
About the contract.... ours aren't cheapter or more expensive than before (i live in germany). I'll pay 56U$ per month for 120 with 120 minutes included (all services), 40 messages and 300MB at full speed (reduced to 60kbit/sec afterwards for that month).
all in one... add some more stuff and I'll call it:

iTricorder!

This 1st gen iPhone owner is tired of crawling along at EDGE speeds

I must say, that is the last reason. Edge is fine for the stuff I do (email, news, chat, ebay).. 3G drains the battery faster than you can look, so its a no-go for me anyway

If you bought a 3G (at least in the US) the day it came out, you can't buy the 3Gs for $299. It's $599 or $699, can't remember which for that model. So you're not breaking even or making money, you're actually going to be spending an additional $250-350 to get it. Now, that means it's not much different than spending the $299 that it'd be if you were eligible, but you don't get to upgrade for free like you're implying.

That's not true! It all depends on your account. I am the primary account holder so much of the services are charged to the primary line. I bought the 3G last year at launch for $300. After speaking with several AT&T reps both in store and call center, I am eligible for a full upgrade. Meaning I only have to pay $300 for a 32GB, of course with a two your renewal.

Ah, see, you don't have a typical setup. If you have a special situation, there may be special exceptions made, so that's why it works for you. Just know that for 95% of the customers out there, that won't be the case.

Was talking with the Apple engineers at WWDC which technical data sheets to look up concerning the GPU within the new iPhone. It's the PowerVR SGX 535.

This chip is one up from the Palm Pre which is the PowerVR SGX 530.

The difference between these is more video based than anything else. 535 has hardware acceleration for H.264 encode/decode, MPEG 4 and JPEG. It also handles HD content to 720p in real time.

These specs seem to give a hint to what Apple are planning for future upgrades of the iPhone or other device. Suggesting, that if your developing for the 3GS then you're already developing for the next generation too.

Could the iPhone 3GS do video out through Media Out Interface / the API Ercia Sadun worked on?

I'm upgrading as well!

Look at the bottom of this page for a complete list of languages understood by voice control. I'm interested to hear whether it copes with strong accents or whether we'll see people from Scotland and Newcastle having to talk like a southerner to be understood.
