While I think the 5S is an step forward, I too am going to wait for the 6.

I would like to see if they can get the screen at least edge to edge on these phones. If they kept the current case size they could get up to 4.4 inch (my estimate using a dodgy ruler in bad light).

The other 2 things I would like are 128GB and better battery.
The days of huge jumps in tech are surely behind us now as the iphone matures. NFC and some king of waterproofing (splash proof) would top it off nicely in future models.
Where can they seriously go from there?

The newest iPhone is innovative... and it's a joy to use.

or

The newest iPhone is iterative... and it's a joy to use.

Who cares? All that matters is the results.

True, but the person I quoted, SJism, obviously cared, since he went out of his way to mention how innovative it is, and even conceded that his opinion would be unpopular.

The 5s camera is defitnetly the best besides the new Lumia

like you got the 5s in your hands even before everyone who can only buy from sept 20! these guys who reviewed it got early access. hold your horses till Sept 20!

however i have to agree Nokia Lumia 1020 is the best.

Possibly. They're very pro Google; probably because Google gives them alot of early access and sneak peeks on new things.

But my though, Topolsky and the 'gang' were all Apple hardcore during their Engadget days.

Of course we all know if Apple offered Jony Ive to them for an hour they'd all be the biggest kissasses in the world.

Unless you're planning to run Windows, I think Apple wants to make it a point not to require/supply too much RAM on the iPhone.

1Gb on the new iPhone running ios7 is GREAT news! Means all of us iphone5 people still waiting to upgrade can rest easy that our beloved phones will last us yet another cycle if we so choose to wait...

Now all that really limits performance is the a6, which I bet, still has yet to be used to its fullest.

i have a bad feeling about 5s - the reviews are not that glowing for battery. they have almost same battery size but with two flashes (yea whatever they may call it for mkting - twin tone flash), processor which they say is twice powerful than previous one, and 64 bit which is without any doubt a cause of concern for the 5s buyers. and they havent upgraded the battery tech, it the same.

Buyers beware!

I wonder if one of these reviewers could be bothered to run a geek bench and see what speed the a7 clocks at?

----------

While of course I would like more RAM (not sure who wouldn't), I can't remember the last time I have ever thought to myself while using an iPhone "*sigh* I wish it had more RAM."

Ahem...iPhone 4s.

And how exactly do you propose to increase battery yield without increasing the size of the battery?

This way the planned obsolescence plays out even better. 2 years life max of any iDevice. This means more money for Apple more often. It's genius.

While I agree with you, there's not much other battery chemistry tech Apple can just switch to. Instead of making phones thinner, they should make it a little thicker. I think most users wouldn't care if they made it a little thicker to gain 25% battery.

Either that, or Apple should sink a few billion $ into advancing and getting these graphene based capacitors out to market ASAP.

Plutonium, of course.

Well, getting your new phone to run great on 1Gb of ram is a start. Excess RAM isn't free, you know.

The fingerprint sensor is a revolutionary advancement in the mobile space.

It will work all the time ... Not as we did it first, meh, not everyone will use it all the time gimmick ... No looking at a ginormous phablet fake-recognition gimmicks!

And as the first real deal 64-bit smartphone! Beat that, haters! ... :D

Once the FP scanner works seamlessly with the keychain, THEN it will be revolutionary...

Also, 64bit is useless for now...Thus, a gimmick. A few years down the road, it'll be the norm.

Im entirely with you. Sticking a larger screen on a phone is not innovation, its just a simple design choice.

To me the hidden innovation is Apple is managing to stay competitive in performance against large screen phones despite smaller display because they have smaller batteries and less room for thermal and whatnots.

It's easier to solve the problem of processor heat and battery life when the phone is large, just stick a large battery in there which is exactly what all the flagship Android have done by going with batteries that are sometimes over twice as big as the iPhone's. Even then both Samsung's Exynos and Qualcomm's Snapdragon had heat problems.

That's one area where Apple's effort has been seriously underated. Here's Anand's comments on the new chip on the 5S

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7335/the-iphone-5s-review/13

The A7 SoC is seriously impressive. Apple calls it a desktop-class SoC, but I'd rather refer to it as something capable of competing with the best Intel has to offer in this market.

The A7's GPU performance is also insanely good - more than enough for anything you could possibly throw at the iPhone 5s today, and fast enough to help keep this device feeling quick for a while.

What Apple's silicon teams have been doing for these past couple of years has really started to pay off. From a CPU and GPU standpoint, the 5s is probably the most futureproof of any iPhone ever launched.

Throughout the next 12 months, I'm sure with all the updates coming up, the A6 will be squeezed for performance. If not, then iOS 8 will.

Or are they just riding on the "hate on Apple" train...? :D

There's no such thing. Paranoid readers made up the "hate on Apple" myth.

Everyone knows Apples the best. Just read the vast numbers of posts praising Apple in this forum.

Remember:

Nokia, Dell, Microsoft, critics, doubting dumb phone users, et al on iPhone, iPad are all novelty. No one will really buy / use it! The rest is history.

2 years like max??? Where are you getting this number from...? There are still 2+ year old iPhones out there being used regularly everyday. Do they eventually stop being supported? Yeah, but definitely not obsolete.

totally agree! 64bit and fp are merely mkting fodder for now. ppl should be worried about battery in 5s. Beware folks!
