The XR is another genius, surprise device targeting non-pro customers, but without skimping on pro-level tech.
If you thought the suffix “Pro” was depleted of all meaning with regard to Macs, don’t try to analyze what it means in the context of using a phone. My bezels are one millimeter thinner than yours, so you know I’m a professional.

Does the Xr have landscape mode on home screens like the plus iPhones did?

Haven't seen this in videos or reviews or is it only the Max that has it?

I presuming it doesn’t seeing as the XS and XS Max don’t. It really puts me off to be honest. Also for some bizarre reason Mail does not have a landscape mode on these phones either but messages does. Why?? I am currently running a recently replaced 6S Plus and just love the width of the screen on it as well as landscape mode. So I really need to check out the XR in person to see if I would like it as much as the old Plus design.

far better than any iphone 4, 5 ,6 ,7 and 8

Don’t forget the iPhone (1st generation), 3G, 3GS, and oh, pretty much every LCD product Apple has ever released in the past 15 years.

Bezel heirarchy goes like this: iPhone X, Xs, Xs Max >>>> XR >>>> everything else >>>> iMac

Strange then, wonder why the new ones don't.

Because faceid doesn’t work in landscape mode.

How come the front camera can do portrait for anything, but the back can't? The front must be software as well surely?

Not so. The Xr has the same faceid system as the XS and XS Max. They (like the X) use the front camera and the Face ID depth system for portrait mode. Hardware not software.

So we are comparing bezels on a newly designed phone to 4 to 8 year old phone designs? Since the 8 is pretty much the same design as the iPhone 6.

Also I fee the side bezels are still thinner iPhone 8 maybe it just looks that way since it has the much larger top and bottom bezels.

Need to see the XR in real life but those bezels are a bit of an eye sore IMO.

Downgraded from the Max to this.
Pleasantly surprised and definitely glad I did it. The display is better than fine.

Unless you didn't like the size of the Max (understandable) or you were at least able to get a full refund or get all your money back in reselling it I don't really understand why you would switch? Any specific reason? Hoping it wasn't just to have a coloured iPhone?

I'm not understanding why people are saying "I hope it sells well". Why? To reward Apple marketing for gimping the screen? The best thing that could possibly happen to the XR (for us consumers next year) is for it to be an utter sales bomb. That would teach the smartypants in Apple marketing department not to mess with the screen next time around.
But yeah- The current XR will still sell by the millions and millions and millions
Yeah, comments like “this phone is so great for the price” baffle me! This phone has the screen of the iPhone 6. Ok, it’s bigger, but it’s the same low ppi, 326. That was released 4 years ago. They could’ve at least upgraded it to the level of the Plus screen. I remember when I got an iPhone 6s Plus after a 6, the difference was very noticeable. I can’t even imagine using such a screen now.

A lot of us own shares and also understand PPI.

I'm looking at the Mail app on my XS Max right now in landscape mode, has a split screen with Inbox on the left and a preview on the right (Contacts also has a similar split landscape view). IIRC, that's just like it was on the Plus phones.

Ah didn't know that thanks, wonder why they stopped that. Does the 7/8+ still do it in iOS 12?
Because the experience has been terrible for landscape home screen, at least for me. I’m sure somebody in Apple felt that too.

The front is a truth depth camera system for Face ID.

So many people said they love their iPhone 8 and will not be upgrading in a century. And that iPhone 8 has the same PPI as the iPhone XR. The hate on the XR screen is unfounded and irrational.

The Porsche 911 was released in 1963 and it’s still the same low doors per car, 2.
I don't get the noise around this. It's a cheap version of iPhone X/Xs. Seriously....

The Xr has lower ppi than the Plus models: it’s 326 just like on the iPhone 6 released 4 years ago.
I don’t think it’s hate. The phone is priced at $750 before tax. It’s not really a budget phone. They could’ve equipped it with the Plus screen ppi.
