Because the experience has been terrible for landscape home screen, at least for me. I’m sure somebody in Apple felt that too.

The front is a truth depth camera system for Face ID.

So many people said they love their iPhone 8 and will not be upgrading in a century. And that iPhone 8 has the same PPI as the iPhone XR. The hate on the XR screen is unfounded and irrational.
iPad Pro has a 264ppi and looks fantastic....

I like the unified product line. Three variations, but all with full-screen display and faceID, and the A12. There isn’t a bad choice to make IMO. I like the R, but bought the S for the slightly more compact size, the OLED and the 2 cameras. I like the f-stop of the R, battery life and colors. There are pros to any choice. A great position for the consumer, real choices depending on your needs/wants.

I'm just back from local Apple Store and had a long play with them. Beautiful phones. Screen resolution is an absolute non issue. But I have a 6S Plus and the deal breaker for me is how significantly narrower the screen is. ... I am just too used to the dimensions of the plus size display. I think I've decided I'm going to choose the 8 Plus 256GB over the XR 128gb. But that's just me.

Yeah. It's 3.5mm narrower than the + phones. I too have a 6S+ and desperately want to get the biggest screen possible, but I'm not shelling out 150,000 yen for the 256Max if it has reception problems that may or may not get rectified.

So here's hoping they fix the issues, but if they don't, I will sacrifice the screen width for a year with an XR then sell it and upgrade to a Max next year.

Couldn't disagree more. Not counting pre-2018 models: highest starting price ever ($750), highest top-end price ever ($1450), largest phones ever with no smaller option, and (of course) every one has that appalling notch (yes, it still sucks and always will, no matter how models they make with it).

The longest I've ever kept an iPhone is 2 years (the original and the 5, my two favorite iPhones ever), but I'll be breaking that record easily with my 7 if this is what we can expect from now on.

The Xr has lower ppi than the Plus models: it’s 326 just like on the iPhone 6 released 4 years ago.
I don’t think it’s hate. The phone is priced at $750 before tax. It’s not really a budget phone. They could’ve equipped it with the Plus screen ppi.
It has the same ppi as last year’s $699 iPhone 8, which is an excellent display. You’re right though, it’s not a budget phone. It’s a mid-priced tier with the top tier features people care most about.

If ppi is one of the top tier features that’s important to you, get the XS or XS Max, not the XR. Using the 326 ppi LCD display is one of the ways Apple pared $250 off the price.

It won't if the market continues this erratic trading.

AMZN bad, GOOGL bad...

The Xr and Apple will do well, but we need the market up too.

You mean there is no chance of it selling so well that AAPL lifts the entire market single handed for 6 months or more? :)

Strange then, wonder why the new ones don't.

I would think it‘s because of FaceID not working in landscape right now.

I would have gotten a max already if they hadn‘t shelved (for now) the feature. Really disappointing.

Take the iPhone 7, cut off all the bezels and do it in an iPhone XR design. Apple would sell the sh.. out of those devices.

Fair enough. But its still a big commitment for me to pay for the XR 128GB on a 2 yr contract and end up being frustrated by the narrow screen. I may even keep the 6S Plus for another year and when the XS Max drops in price go for that. The 6S Plus was just recently totally replaced under warranty. Im getting all day battery life with the new battery and it feels like a new phone with iOS 12

Thing is I have a kid hanging out to inherit this phone. So I'm still swaying towards iPhone 8 Plus 256.

I don't get that comparison at all. It's not like the XR is any less expensive than Apple's previous flagship phones. It's a nice phone, I guess – as it should be considering Apple's asking price – but it's not going to attract any new customers. Nor does it seem particularly attractive to anyone who was waiting for Apple to release a smaller phone.

The XR would attract a lot of customers who are into the new X design with all the new tech and are not bothered with having LCD instead of OLED and not bothered with the pixel density thing. I bought the X last year but if I was to buy an iPhone this year, XR would have been my choice. Yes, it is not a cheap phone. But it is significantly cheaper than the other iPhones that have the same tech in them and contrary to last years models, this year it is not a massive difference between them.
As for the smaller iPhone? You can forget it. It ain't gonna happen. I think Apple was the last to move away from tiny smartphone screens.

Yeah. It's a tough one. I asked this in another thread but no answer, so I'll ask here. Can the Pixel 3 do the portrait mode beyond faces with its back camera? If so, then there is no reason why the XR can't. If it can't, then that makes it less likely that Apple will intro it down the track with an update (if they ever would...)

Can't answer your question. However it feels lame, that with all that AI and Machine Learning-power thrown around, they can not come up with some object recognition algorithm beyond face-detection. Seems they limited it to have another up-sell argument.

I'm not understanding why people are saying "I hope it sells well". Why? To reward Apple marketing for gimping the screen? The best thing that could possibly happen to the XR (for us consumers next year) is for it to be an utter sales bomb. That would teach the smartypants in Apple marketing department not to mess with the screen next time around.
But yeah- The current XR will still sell by the millions and millions and millions

Because they're most likely stockholders and not disgruntled customers.

If you’re bothered/ even really notice the difference between LCD and OLED, you’ve probably gone for an Xs anyway, so no issue.

Are Apple doing any cases for the XR?

The iPad Pro is viewed from much further away. More importantly the iPad doesn’t have such a low resolution.

The 8 is a lot smaller than the Xr and 720p is ok on a 4.7 inch display.
