Can't the bokeh effect be applied after the fact using a 3rd party photo editing app?
It cannot. Unless the iPhone XR recognizes the image as a human face, it will not set the photo as portrait and code the photo with focal information. You need this information for apps like focus. I used focus on my iPhone X.

I don't get that comparison at all. It's not like the XR is any less expensive than Apple's previous flagship phones. It's a nice phone, I guess – as it should be considering Apple's asking price – but it's not going to attract any new customers. Nor does it seem particularly attractive to anyone who was waiting for Apple to release a smaller phone.

I've been waiting for an updated SE, but the XR now has my attention. The iPhone 6, 7 and 8 form factors didn't have my interest. My gf had the 6S and now has the 7, and it's just not the right phone for me. I prefer the smaller SE form factor, but the XR changes things for me. I think it's the larger screen real estate within the form factor that changes things. I don't want a larger device necessarily, but I'll compromise on that when it's an all-screen experience.

I'm just back from local Apple Store and had a long play with them. Beautiful phones. Screen resolution is an absolute non issue. But I have a 6S Plus and the deal breaker for me is how significantly narrower the screen is. I have larger hands and find the Plus size screen so comfortable to type on with two hands. This feels so cramped. And although the screen is taller with all the UI pushed is into the square portion of the screen. Bring up a keyboard and check out all the wasted space below it. Overall it actually feels like there is less usable UI than my plus. Also no landscape mode, no sidebar in landscape for mail ( same with XS Max which the Apple Guy didn't realise) I am just too used to the dimensions of the plus size display. I think I've decided I'm going to choose the 8 Plus 256GB over the XR 128gb. But that's just me. I have no doubt Apple will sell bucketloads of these.

I have to agree. Apple has knocked it out of the park with this. I’m revising and saying 60% of total iPhone sales by Q4. Really going to hold back the XS. Doesn’t compete with the Max so Max sales will stay strong. Apple will gain market share with is device leading to increased services revenue. All I need is a great Mac Mini on the 30th and I’ll feel optimistic again. :apple:

Darn rights! Apple, bring us a killer Mac mini, and you'll have crossed off the last significant complaint from my list!

The Plus exists for people like you, Mr. Big hands. Not every device is for everyone. Glad Apple offers something that is right for you. Is the Max out of your price range?

Unless you didn't like the size of the Max (understandable) or you were at least able to get a full refund or get all your money back in reselling it I don't really understand why you would switch? Any specific reason? Hoping it wasn't just to have a coloured iPhone?

Had eye strain and headaches from the oled screen. I know I’m the minority and the max was a beautiful device. Apple took it back as a return.

I also have troubles with light backgrounds on the OLED screen of my X since they seem to display some kind of nervous variation in time (flicker) or space (structure). I'll probably will look into the XR to see if its display looks smoother. Though I would miss the additional 2x lens of the camera.

The XR is another genius, surprise device targeting non-pro customers, but without skimping on pro-level tech. This is akin to the Airport Express and SE launches. Thanks Apple!
I’m struggling to understand how a phone can be considered “pro”. I guess only professionals can afford the X versions?

You’re right. Apple has inflated pricing to the absurd and it makes their old pricing scheme seem like a bargain. What once high end and expensive is now a killer deal. Now that’s courage.

I’m holding my XR and I’m pretty happy. The screen is really good for an LCD.

No pet portrait mode was the nail in the coffin for me. Our "kids" bark!

Yeah. It's a tough one. I asked this in another thread but no answer, so I'll ask here. Can the Pixel 3 do the portrait mode beyond faces with its back camera? If so, then there is no reason why the XR can't. If it can't, then that makes it less likely that Apple will intro it down the track with an update (if they ever would...)

Yeah and most people that try it will get one. It really is a great phone. I just know personally I will miss the width of the plus size screen. No point having a tall screen if the UI doesn’t fully take advantage.

The Xr has lower ppi than the Plus models: it’s 326 just like on the iPhone 6 released 4 years ago.
I don’t think it’s hate. The phone is priced at $750 before tax. It’s not really a budget phone. They could’ve equipped it with the Plus screen ppi.

If the Xr had the same 400dpi display as the Plus model iPhones battery life would take a hit on two fronts. One, just driving more pixels requires more horsepower, and two- Apple has the Plus models do some fancy upscaling and downscaling to render everything at a 3x resolution of the original iPhone- this too takes up some GPU and CPU cycles. So to have that slightly better looking display Apple would have had to sacrifice a little bit of performance and probably a not too insignificant hit on battery life. I would hazard to wager that people who don’t read this site but enjoy the reliability of their iPhone would agree with the design trade-offs Apple chose in the Xr. All that being said, I have a Xs and the display is roight lovely.
