Hard to imagine Apple won't have a new 4" model of the best selling phone in the US.... ...even if it's mostly upgrading a few internals (e.g., A8, cam, whatever, and which would help 'splain why there've been no 4" model part leaks)...

...certainly would be a "bold" move however, given their intransigence on going bigger if they went ALL bigger in "one swell foop"...

...and they do confound me with their decisions some time....

I told a nurse at work that the iPhone size was increasing and she hated it. Made me realize that people still want small phones. The highest I would go is 6" but maybe for her it's only 4". The only solution is too bring out multiple sizes. You can't make everyone happy with only one size.
If they use the same internals but different resolutions depending on screen size to maintain the dpi I could see it but it would cause a performance difference; smaller phone would be faster. If you use the same resolution then the bigger iphone display would take take the hit compared to the smaller one. You can tell the difference between a 4.7" 720p display and a 5.5" 720p display.
Come September I bet people will not be happy either way it goes. It will be a very active forum.

LOL what happened to the Apple and Thumb thingy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHtr-697B5w

Suddenly they want to make phablets to compete with Nokia, LG and Samsung's phablets?

Philosophies are not hard and fast laws of nature or behavior. They are theories that can change as new information comes to light. Apple realized thumbs are not one-size-fits-all and there is a path to growth converting people using larger format Androids solely because of size, not OS preference. I for one have zero interest in a 5.5" phone of any OS. I like being able to one hand my phone and slip it in my pocket.

Once people decide to go big, it doesn't matter anymore because the phone is not intended for 1 hand use anyway.

Very true. Once I went past the 5" mark to the Note 2 and now the Note 3 I felt that I could go up to 6", maybe 6.5". I still remember thinking that my 4.3" Motorola Droid X was a big phone back in the day and when I hold it today I think of it as being cute and small.
No different than cars. Once a family moves from a Toyota Corolla to a Toyota Camry it's hard to go back to a Corolla if money is not a problem. Many times families will go to a SUV or minivan. We treat phones the same way.

I will switch to apple for a 5.5" with thin bezel and a 2 day battery life. If the top and bottom are as big as the mock phones then no go.

This. I can take the extra wideness, but if the top and bottom bezels are not significantly reduced, the 5.5" iPhone will simply be too tall.

Even though I'll never buy a phablet, I don't condone Apple for chasing that market (phablets). They can use that extra space to add more stuff like a bigger battery and advertise it as having double usage-time as the competition. Put bigger antennas for better reception...

I'm just wondering… Is Apple iPhone 5.5 inch have a bigger bezel than a Samsung phablet?

It probably will just like every other budget phone. In Android world, 1080P is standard for flagship phone and Quad HD phone is new standard for new flagship. Apple could probably get away with lower resolution screen, but think about it, iPhone 5's screen is sub 720p. Even 720P videos will down sampled to iPhone's native resolution, it is kind sad in 2014 standard.

I mean, there is always someone willing to push the technology to the limit, maybe will scarifies something (i.e. battery life, performance), but it is still better than not trying. If nobody willing to try, we might still stuck with sub 480P right now.

Like I said in another comment... Apple is a "total package" company. The screen is only one part of the equation.

People will knock Apple for not putting a 2560x1440 screen in the next iPhone... which will cause them to ignore all the other things they DO put in.

If Apple doesn't "push the limit" in screen technology... they'll "push the limit" in other areas.

It's all about creating a great overall experience.

Go read some of the reviews of the LG G3. They put a super high-resolution screen in the phone... but it seems to be more of a hindrance than a benefit.

Yes... they get points for trying... but they get more points taken away for harming the product.

Where's LG's fingerprint sensor? To me... that's more important than insane pixel density.

See? There are many things that go into a phone.

why are we still using inches? imperial measurements are so archaic and outmoded! Only three countries world wide use this system, Liberia, Myanmar and of course, the United States.

it's 12cm or 14 cm screens. Even laptop sizes are still advertised in inches! are we all really that backward?

Have you look into TVs in the past 10 years??

Inches too.

The transition to the international system failed in the US. People still think and use their odd measurements and that is a topic for another thread.

When the original iPad first launched, I was disappointed (but not surprised) that it didn't have phone functionality. The real innovation at the time was to converge phone and computer into a single device, but obviously Apple had other ideas, not least the requirement to sell us more stuff.

With the 5.5" iPhone, there will finally be a device that will mean I can–for the most part–carry just a single device.

Obviously Samsung did this first with the Note, but I'm surprised that other manufacturers (esp. Blackberry) haven't pushed into the phablet space. A full size iPad air with phone hardware would be killer IMHO.

How you make the calls is the key, and there are many ways:
1) speak to it directly: like a handheld or speakerphone mode
2) use headphones
3) use Bluetooth to something else: earpiece, car, speakers, etc
4) iWatch
5) FaceTime calls: voice only, video
And everyone has a different take on this, specially for privacy. Main reason why texting in any shape or form (IM, SMS, iMessage, Whatsapp, BBM) has become so widespread.
How they will address this is the interesting part.

And suddenly, one hand use became useless, as Apple fans around the world supported Apple's decision to sell a bigger iPhone than ever.

I never understood the "one hand" argument. I've never, not one time, used my phone with a single hand. People act like they have so much to do with their other hand while on their iPhone. I mean, I see it soooo often. Playing with an iPhone with one hand and using their other hand to.. oh wait, I never see that. Literally, never.

Now I will have to hold each to decide which is best for me. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a perfect size IMHO for what phones are capable of doing right now. The Note is a little extra and I'm not sure if I need the additional real-estate. I have an iPad Air so if I want to consume content on a larger scale or present then I already have that.

This should be interesting. I am guessing that these phones will drop in September.

I also hope that they up the storage to 128 gb with 32 gb being the smallest.

If they dont the next iphone will loose the retina and goes under 300 ppi

That doesn't make any sense... If they keep the pixel density the same , then it will stay at 326 ppi, which will not lose retina and not be under 300

----------

How do you know 1080p is overkill? I've owned the Note 2 with a 720p for a year and I currently own a Note 3 with a 1080p display. I would never go back to a 720p display when the screen size is 5.5" plus. You can differently tell the difference. The performance of the Note 3 is better and the battery is just as good.
I wish people stop talking out of their butts without any real experience. Now I will agree that anything over 1080p may be overkill but as long as the chipset and battery can handle it I have no issues. It's why I'm skipping the LG G3 and waiting for the fall lineup.

I have used the galaxy note 3 many times. A very nice piece of hardware to be sure. The galaxy note 3 is 5.7inches and 386ppi. (Overkill on my opionion). A 1080p screen a 5.5inch device would be close to, or maybe 400ppi. And a 1080p screen on a 4.7inch phone would be well over 450ppi... Overkill. And do not want in the iPhone 6

I have read some LG G3 reviews, from MKBHD to Pocketnow, seems reviews are generally positive. Performance seems good, but I need really test it to see. I am not arguing what you see, but putting a sub 720P screen in 2014 seems really bad...

I careless what Apple is a package company or anything else, I have set my bar. No 5 inch screen, no 1080P screen equals no buy for me. I seen many Android devices with higher resolution screen and performances are really good

Screen is the thing you are staring at it all the day. I really care less about finger print sensor. I do not even put my password on my phone. I care about the screen I am staring at and I want it good. Sub 720P screen is no no to me, hack every HD movies will be down sample to native sub 720 resolution, which is so stupid

Understood.

So I guess you won't be getting an iPhone... not for a while anyway.

It will be at least 2 more years until Apple puts even 1920x1080 in an iPhone... let alone 2560x1440

I'm glad that's settled. :)

And I always thought that 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone... At least that's what EVERYBODY here has been saying for years. And then came the 4" iPhone. And now that Apple has finally decided to follow the competition, 5.5" is no longer "way too big"...

All that being said, Apple should cater to the wishes of folks like myself and release an iPad Mini that can make phone calls. I don't make many phone calls, but I use the mobile Internet very often, and I certainly don't want to carry two mobile gadgets with me. The iPad Mini has a wonderful form factor, I like that hardware very much. But it doesn't make much sense to buy such a device when you already own a 5.something" smartphone.

I definitely agree with your first point. Double standards from us Apple fans.
As for the second point: LOL

Really, never? You should visit a city sometimes:

I know it may sound very pathetic but this is entirely true. The only reason I bought an Android device (Samsung Galaxy Note II) is because I didn't like the size of the iPhone, it was far too small for me. So I was pretty much forced into the Android family. And as much as I never regret buying an Android device, it isn't for me and I wanna return to iOS.

You need to look at it the other way too though, keep an open mind, as I know some people that like Apple because they make quality small flagship phones.

So the best thing Apple can do is create a new 4 inch phone for those that want the smaller screen, 4'7 inch screens for the people that like the average size phone of today (Most people fit into this catagory) and a 5.5 inch phablet for people like myself that want that little big extra with a larger phone. This way they are reaching out to a lot of people/customers, instead of people that want small phones.

LOL what happened to the Apple and Thumb thingy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHtr-697B5w

Suddenly they want to make phablets to compete with Nokia, LG and Samsung's phablets?

They decided the millions of sales worldwide they are losing every year to the bigger screen phones was a market they wanted to go after. Will have to see if he 4.7" phone is enough, and if they launch a 5.5" iPhone the pricing will be crucial, otherwise if they charge too much they will then just alienate the market they are after.

And I always thought that 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone... At least that's what EVERYBODY here has been saying for years. And then came the 4" iPhone. And now that Apple has finally decided to follow the competition, 5.5" is no longer "way too big"....

Ill admit I was against larger phones a few years ago but have started to notice I'd love to have a 5.5" iPhone (I've tried some of the larger angroid based devices so know the size won't hurt). I want more real estate while doing everything I do on my iPhone. iPadm is a great device but let's not go overboard when we're discussing being able to make calls.

I moved to Android (Samsung Galaxy Note II) simply cause I needed a larger screen for work. I would return to Apple within a heartbeat as soon as this rumored 5.5 inch iPhone is released.

Fare weather friend!! J/K of course.... I'm dying for a larger iPhone and the 5.5" is going to fit the bill nicely. My wife balked at even the 4.7 saying she had a hard enough time getting her current i5 into her front pocket.... I told her to buy larger shorts or get a smaller..... I don't remember much after that.

..... if you own an iPad mini with cellular you CAN make calls using a VoIP service like hangouts, freedompop, magicjack, etc... On the iPad they would default to speakerphone but you can always use the headphones or a Bluetooth adapter. I've seen many people go that route.

You say this like it's a replacement for a larger iPhone.... Being able to make voip calls on an iPm is not even close to the experience those that want a larger iPhone are wanting and frankly expecting. Come on now stop being silly.

People like you are exactly what puts me off about this site. Typical Apple fans who expect everything to be beyond prefect, even a simple illustration who an perhaps ordinary guy made just to show how a display size would look in a hand. But no, it was a shocking image for a lots of drama members around here!!
Drop it already and get a life if you don't have one.

I found what they said funny and believe they were "joking" but maybe not...... I still think it's funny either way.

I didn't think that a 5.5 inch iPhone would be in my future because the thought of holding that massive device to my head is just silly.
This exactly. Think how much better it will be to read, surf the web, watch the porn ect ect on a 5.5" screen! I'm 74.5" and 220 so I don't mind putting a large device to my head but for you tiny beaned ladies and gents bluetooth headsets will make it easy to accept the GIANT iPhone.... I can't wait!

Beating a dead horse.
Ummmm it's a rumor site so any "new" rumor is going to be covered. You of course clicked the link to see what was up so how can you be upset?

All easily done on a 5.5 device. Unless you are a kid who wears skinny jeans.

Not so easy to one hand a 5.5" device if you have small hands. Sorry, it's what the Creator blessed me and many other humans with. You need to view life in other people's perspective some times. And, no don't wear skinny jeans. I'm not a kid, I'm a middle-aged professional. I wear plain front slacks and chinos. ;)

Having used the note 2, I really do not want the 5.5 inch.
I hope apple has other sizes with the same set of other features.
I really don't want to buy the smaller version if it's inferior to the 5.5 inch.
