when will this bi-annual enlargement of phones stop?

Maybe 5.5 is the upper limit because since the introduction of Galaxy Note 2 at 5.5, we haven't seen any larger phones become popular.

Just because the 4" may or may not be discontinued it doesn't mean people should hate on it. I don't see similar negative remarks about the 4.7" version. Ironicaly if any version is to replace the 4" then it will be the 4.7", the 5.5" is after a different market.

Hard to imagine Apple won't have a new 4" model of the best selling phone in the US.... ...even if it's mostly upgrading a few internals (e.g., A8, cam, whatever, and which would help 'splain why there've been no 4" model part leaks)...

...certainly would be a "bold" move however, given their intransigence on going bigger if they went ALL bigger in "one swell foop"...

...and they do confound me with their decisions some time....

Screen looks a great size. esp the 5.5"

Just please "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" Apple.

Don't ruin it with a "MASSIVE" Bezel around it.

Please Please Please.

The very latest Android large screen phones, esp from LG have much much nicer bezels.
If you need to keep the home button at the bottom, then ok, we'll accept that bezel at the bottom, but don't then go and put an equally MASSIVE one at the top for no reason.

Please show us you have more imagination that to just stretch the current design bigger

Why do you keep using the phrase "no good reason"? Since when did you become the arbiter on what's a good reason or not? Apple is never going to release a phone with asymmetrical bezels. And if they did people would complain about how ugly it looks and how Steve Jobs would never have approved. As far as I'm concerned, just cramming more pixels in or shrinking the bezels isn't imaginative. UHD displays on 5" screens is just spec whoring.

For sure Apple will refer to the back swipe as their solution to the 'one handed operation' issue that they already implemented in iOS7.

People will eat it up and forget all about their bitter denial of the existence of anything other than 4" phones.

I'm still not sold on these 'generously' proportioned phones, but I could never reach each corner of my iPhone 5 with one hand anyway.

I'll probably get a 5CS :p

Looks like they solved it using the trackpad to facilitate one handed operation.

Ah yes... the HTC One M7 with a Full HD 1080p screen at 468ppi

Tragically... it was outsold by the iPhone with a pitiful 326ppi

What does that say about certain specs?

So you dodge the actual issue about clarity on a higher res screen and talk about sales figures...

.. but then again Ford sells more than Ferrari so good point there fella..

Because Apple doesn't do something unless they have a VERY good reason to.

LG and Samsung have screens with 534ppi. That's great.

But is it that much better than a screen with 416ppi? Or even 326ppi?

There are lots of other things to consider besides resolution: battery life, GPU horsepower, etc. You may say Apple is getting left behind... but not when those other phones run like garbage because they are trying to push too many pixels.

We're at the point where pixels are basically invisible... so do we really need to make them smaller?

The term "diminishing returns" comes to mind.

My iPhone 5S screen is 326ppi. But I've never once thought it needs to be sharper.

And that's what Apple does when they design something. They don't add needless specs for the hell of it.

So how dare Apple make a screen with such "low" specs? They weighed the pros and cons.

Just go take a look at Oppo's new Find 7A Quad HD display... You will notice the difference just like the difference between HD TV and 4K...

How about this:

HTC's super-sharp amazing high-resolution screen still wasn't enough to make the HTC One M7 a popular phone.

In other words... that spec wasn't enough to entice people to buy the phone... so you have to question how important that spec is in the first place.

Does that explain it?

Earlier someone in this thread said something along the lines of "Would Apple dare to release a screen with a lower resolution than what LG and Samsung are doing?"

My response would be "Watch them..."

High-resolution screens? Great.

Absolutely necessary? Not in the least.

Gotcha.

But theoretically... if a phone did not have a Quad HD display... would it survive in today's market?

We're gonna find out.

Speaking of hi-res screens:
The good
Ultra-slim bezels pack the 5.5-inch screen into a relatively compact body.
While plastic still isn't the greatest, the plastic in the G3 is an improvement over the high-gloss plastics LG has used in past devices.
Tap-to-wake is still awesome.
The laser autofocus is fast and accurate. Also it uses a laser!
The screen looks great, but it's not a noticeable improvement over a 1080p device.
LG's software mostly looks nice and doesn't overload the user with crap.
A removable battery and MicroSD slot.

The bad
The Battery life during high usage. The screen uses a lot of power. It sucks down power to the point that LG has to throttle down the brightness when the device gets too hot.
It's pretty much impossible to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p on a ~5-inch device.
The UI sometimes stutters. Pushing all those pixels takes lots of GPU power that isn't always available.
The Recent Apps screen is a cluttered mess. It's also one of the few Android pieces you can't replace.

The Ugly
Spec-sheet-driven design. The 534 ppi screen doesn't improve the user experience and drags down battery life, but it will make for good advertisements.

I'll wait until reviews analyze the iPhone 6 battery life. We'll see where Apple made any concessions.

And I always thought that 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone... At least that's what EVERYBODY here has been saying for years. And then came the 4" iPhone. And now that Apple has finally decided to follow the competition, 5.5" is no longer "way too big"...

All that being said, Apple should cater to the wishes of folks like myself and release an iPad Mini that can make phone calls. I don't make many phone calls, but I use the mobile Internet very often, and I certainly don't want to carry two mobile gadgets with me. The iPad Mini has a wonderful form factor, I like that hardware very much. But it doesn't make much sense to buy such a device when you already own a 5.something" smartphone.

Can't you make FaceTime (or Skype) calls over Wi-Fi with an iPad?

----------

When the iPhone was first released, 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone. However after mobile gaming and browsing really took off, there was definitely a need for a larger screen to appreciate and utilise more content.

Regrettably Apple's defiance and insistence that the one-handed use of a phone is imperative will give the haters quite a lot of ammunition once Apple do release a larger screen with their next phone. Nonetheless they are making the right move and although it's potentially a couple of years too late, they're not yet in a position where it's too little, too late -- as arguably it is with RIM.

Let the haters hate. When they are finished ranting, they will rush to their nearest Apple retailer and by a 5.5" iPhone :p

Imagine going from a 3.5 to a 5.5. If anyone was still rocking the old screen.

That's what I'll be doing. I'm still on 4s.
I just got back from looking at phones. Mainly wanted to check out screen sizes.
The 4.7 is still too small. I could "one hand" that no problem (M7). Checked out the Moto X as well. 4.7 just isn't enough of a change for me.
Looked at the Galaxy note 2, and it was a much better size for me. I could still one hand operate without problem.
I really hope apple does come up with the 5.5.
A 5.0 would be the bare minimum I would want to go.
All the people here who say the 5.5, or even a 4.7 is too big, I just shake my head.
After looking at all those larger phones, and now back on my 4s, it's just pathetic.

All the people here who say the 5.5, or even a 4.7 is too big, I just shake my head.

That's like me saying that the current screen you're using is too small, even though there are some who are perfectly happy with it and don't want it to change.

The important thing for people to remember is that this is all personal opinion. There's no need to trash talk another person simply because they want a bigger or smaller screen.

I'm just going to make a bold claim...

Over a 100 million people will dump premium Android phones within 1 year after the release of these new iPhones!

So stop complaining!

I'm curious if they will add better features to the larger model? Rumor has it that the larger phone will cost $100 more. Surely they added more RAM or something?

I am going to need the 5.5" iPhone 6 to have:

- All day battery life
- Five icons across, not just BIG DUMB icons
- Maybe the possibility to run iPad optimized apps (the Note 2 runs tablet versions of Evernote and it's AMAZING!

- built in stylus? . . . . . never mind, I am reaching on that one.
- Did I mention all day battery life?

Man, it feels weird pining over an Apple iPhone. Haven't done that since the 3GS.

I know many say that the 5.5" won't happen, but personally, Apple should go for broke and make it. I doubt the 4.7" version will be waterproof like the Samsung GS5, which is the phone I'll be using to replace a Note 2 until a Note 4 debuts. The only thing that would help me move back into the walled garden is a 5.5" iPhone 6, or a waterproof & less delicate 4.7" iPhone 6.

The important thing to remember is all the leaked photos are fake and we aren't getting a 5.5 screen, but most likely ONLY the 4.7. This is the cynical side of me who wishes the opposite, but it would so be like Apple. Not that I hold it agianst them. After all, it's us who are speculating.

No, people like YOU are what puts people off this site. Overly aggressive, jumped up, pompous folk who take ridiculous offence to a random post and then start flapping their gums to the poster about, "Getting a life".

Here's a "friendly" hint. People who log onto internet forums to tell people to "get a life" tend to not have much of one themselves and can only act the "big man" via an internet persona from behind a keyboard.

The guy asked, I would wager jokingly, that someone could tape the display to their face to see how that giant screen looks held up to your face. And then you went off like an Anger Management patient.

You have issues.
Couldn't have said it better.

So, a few years ago, would you have also said:

"Apple is never going to release a smaller Tablet"
"Apple is never going to release a bright colored plastic iPhone"

And more recently:

"Apple is never going to release a stupidly big 5.5" phone"

So now you are going to state for a fact:

"Apple is never going to release a phone with asymmetrical bezels"

You really really sure on this fact, as the other 3 (which were said with vigor by many here) have all turned out to be wrong.

Picture doesn't look real. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple come up with something totally different than what we are seeing in the 4.7 leaks. I
It's almost as Applle leaked these part Mockups intentionally to keep everyone off guard.
With the 5 we never had leaks 4 months before
The actual release date

As smartphones become more ubiquitous, it becomes easier for people in the supply chain to use their own smartphone cameras to take pictures of parts and leak them. Apple has been moving furiously to clamp down on such leaks, which makes it seem that said leaks are quite accurate.
