These machines are fast enough for development, but with a few docker containers and some IDEs running, they will start swapping. Why do you need more than 16GB on an ultra-portable notebook computer?

Swapping would be fine as apparently the SSD is twice as fast as before and you probably don't wear it down too much since there's not that much writing going on once the container is running. These machines are fast enough for development, but with a few docker containers and some IDEs running, they will start swapping.
I pre-ordered the MacBook Pro. And it will be here tomorrow. This is my first MacBook Pro to ever own. I have the MacBook, but I think it’s from 2015. While I’m still learning about Macs, I don’t really know a whole lot about them. I just felt it was time to upgrade, and that’s why I did. The MacBook I have is terribly slow.
it seems that y’all pretty much know what you’re talking about in this thread. Do you think this would’ve been a good investment? Or do you think I made a big mistake? The bottom line is I really use my MacBook to update my iPhone, and use it for the web, messages, etc. But I’m still an amateur. I didn’t go with the air, because the pro had more bells and whistle‘s than the air did. Like the Touch Bar. I’m a quick learner, and don’t mind learning new things. So I’m kind of excited about this purchase.
And before y’all ask, I can’t update the iPhone over the air. For some odd reason, the iPhone will freeze when you click on software update. As if it was corrupted. And this is been from back up, to back up, to back up, for a couple of years now. I don’t know why it does it. On a fresh install, I can get to the software update screen no problem. But not on my back up I have now. Anyway, that’s why I update my iPhone through my MacBook.
Docker containers don't necessarily take a lot of space - Alpine Linux base is only about 5MB and if you clean up dependencies you can run a lot of containers on a 16GB machine. Even a full Ubuntu installation is less than 200MB.These machines are fast enough for development, but with a few docker containers and some IDEs running, they will start swapping.
I understand that the new M1 laptops can only run a single external monitor (plus the internal display).Do we know if the MacBook Pro can run 2 external 4k monitors? I currently have a dual screen 4M set up with 6 core i7 max mini. But would like to replace it with a laptop
Sadly you cannot. When it is available it's unknown if you will be able to run Windows on it. Hopefully Microsoft opens the license of the ARM version of Windows to more than just select OEMs.If M1 can run Parallel Desktop 16, I will buy when available in Taiwan
I’m hoping it can run 2 then I’ll go ahead and make the purchase. Once sold the miniI understand that the new M1 laptops can only run a single external monitor (plus the internal display).
It remains to be seen if using DisplayLink with a dock could allow 2 monitors.
The M1 Mini can run two externals per Apple specs.
My new baby is here! so far everything is awesome and it is good to be back on a MAC and off the PC bandwagon again after 6 years! MacBook Air 8 core 16 mg 512

And why do you need "some IDEs" (i.e. multiple) running? Why would you run more than one IDE at a time? Maybe an IDE an some terminal or text editor windows. VSCode is fairly lightweight, and I'm sure there are others.
Maybe mid to late 2021 my guessAny predictions for when a 16" M1 MBP will be available?
