Totally cool. Looks like a computer that Darth Vader would have had on his desk in the Death Star. I don't need it, but would love to have it. Great job Apple!

Okay, so it's very reflective and it rolls. Those specs have to be two firsts for a review of a workstation. For the more in-depth review, I hope they cover whether anything like a ping-pong ball can hover over it in the venting air flow.

Ha ha… This gets my vote for comment of the month. :)

But seriously… now you have me wanting to know if the ping-pong ball will hover.

What is it that the "Mini" will not do? Not what hardware is it missing but what will it not do? The high end Mini had a quad core i7 and is SSD based. The HD4000 GPU could be better but I can run multiple 1080p video in the time line on FCPX.

Mini wouldn't do games, even iris pro is crap in games.

What exactly do you mean by "€10.000 dollar" 10.000 dollars or euro's?

None of which the system actually is btw.

Umm, you do realize that euros is shorthand for Eurodollars, don't you?

Also, it is quite possible to configure one of these at $10k or €10k.

But it doesn't make grammatical or mathematical sense. A full stop (a.k.a. period) indicates decimals in maths. In literature, it indicates a stop, or the end of a sentence. A comma indicates that there's more to read.

Quite frankly, I don't know why people would write 1.000,1 instead of 1,000.1, especially if they're using numbers. You wouldn't do the same in maths, no matter what country you're from. It's completely off-the-wall.

Hm...no, each country uses the same format for both maths and currency. So, if they use comma to indicate decimals in currency, this will be used on maths, too. The only problem between formats is only when you want to exchange something with someone who knows the other one.

US date format also is odd and doesn't make sense, but it is still used as it is (in US), while many other countries use a different one that really makes a better sense for many reasons. I guess it is a matter of tradition - hard to change.

Love n Hate

Beautiful design and some neat innovations.

Way too hard to upgrade over time so to me it's DOA.

Apple...what were you thinking?

Apple created the first wearable desktop computer?

Oy vey, you're really gonna compare your MBA to a Mac Pro in the sense of how it handles loads? Your MBA will be breathing it's last breath running heavy loads.

Uh, no. I was citing another example of how an Apple product was silent when doing nothing and became noisy when it was working.

That was the context of the post I responded to. The reviewers said the nMP was whisper quite when they turned it on (as my MBA is). And the poster wondered if it would be quiet under load.

Oh vey, I can't believe I'm taking the time to explain this to someone....

Xeons support multiple processors, the i7 does not.

Which proves his point. The Xeon is wasted in this Mac Pro. For the previous versions of the Mac Pro it made sense to use Xeon's for ease of build. Now there is no reason to do so. Apart from using more expensive and RAM and charging people more.

Looks like a nice machine and i'm sure would be a great improvement if I were to buy one over my 08 model.

It's particularly good-looking with its case off, exposing the Mac Pro's machinery, but the case is required to dissipate heat. You can't even use the Mac Pro with it off.

Perhaps one could fabricate their own diy translucent case or have one made. Maybe something will be available as aftermarket.

But I wouldn't bother as I actually like that super-reflective minimalist shell.

I have heard that the case is actually an integral part of the cooling system. I don't know if that means only that it channels the air, or if the metal actually disperses heat. Now if you could just get some transparent aluminum...

Let’s get this straight right off...

Before all the nonsense about how you can buy a Dell with more power for a tenth of the price how’s about you go and check the prices of the CPU, the graphics cards, the RAM and report back. And don’t forget the biggest perk of all, a souped up version of Final Cut Pro optimized for this machine. Professional (real professionals, not so-called prosumers) video editors will be all over this thing.

Too bad the base model is outperformed by desktops costing under a grand.

The base model isn't that appealing, the sweet spot is the six core version.

It's nice. Had they made it with an i7 and non ECC RAM I'd have gotten one for sure.

Why? The i7 isn't any cheaper and the ram prices should drop to be similar to the non ECC versions before long.

What is it that the "Mini" will not do? Not what hardware is it missing but what will it not do?

For me the big limitation is the max ram. Performance suffers as well due to using mobile CPU.

The Xeon is wasted in this Mac Pro. For the previous versions of the Mac Pro it made sense to use Xeon's for ease of build. Now there is no reason to do so.

So you'd use the eight and twelve core i7 instead? And there's little reason not to use the xeon on the low end as well, it's not like the comparable i7s are any cheaper than the xeon 1620 and 1650.

Isn't it nice to actually have some news on this site about a new Apple product, as opposed to the endless litigation this and suing that and copy this reports?

Anyway, the news story's haven't done much for my desire and lust to have a Mac Pro!!!!!!

Base 6 core with a 512GB SSD? HELL YES PLEASE!

i think people that play the i7 is the same game aren't peaking cores for 1000+ hrs per year.. because if they were, they'd be "yes, sign me up for xeon please.. thank you"

I think it's mainly from i7s being way cheaper years ago and not keeping up to date with chip prices and realizing that stopped being the case years ago.

Yes, you absolutely would if you're in a country that does things that way. It's just a convention. Get over it and accept that the entire world doesn't always do things the way you do.

For example, you say maths and sport, while we say math and sports. And what we call the decimal point in French is called the virgule - the comma.

Awesome! I ditched my last 19" CRT last year... now my cat will again have a warm place to drape herself across while I work at my desk!
