The new design doesn't pique my interest but the internal improvements sure do.

Plus only suckers sit in line anymore when it's so much easier to have the UPS/fed ex man drop it at your door, sometimes before the apple store even opens for business.

It used to be cool to go to the store and sit outside all night but after the first one.... maybe the second that feeling got old fast IMHO.

That being said I would love to know wtf people are expecting? Every new phone tons whine about it not being "innovative" enough. What would be? Can't re-invent the wheel every year so what does it take?

You know each of those devices has a serviceable life of 3-4 years. It's ok to keep one for 2 years.

I have had every iPhone since the 3GS. Early on I stood in line for hours to get each new model. As they started allowing you to order and receive one at the time they went on sale, I would set my alarm to get up in the middle of the night to place an order. I did the same with iPad 1, 2, 3 and mini.

I guess some would call me a fan. However, this go round I have seen nothing rumored in the 5s that has even peaked my interest. If all the design team can come up with is more processor and memory with a finger print reader I'll most likely sit out this round.

You are not alone. Overall the smartphone market is in a huge slump.

What? But I need to upgrade my phone every year in order to feel as though I have the latest and greatest! Surely it's Apple's fault for not giving me a brand new phone every single year.

Same here. Always was excited for each product Apple releases but not really excited for the iPhone 5S. However, I'm pumped for iOS 7.

Funny I do things with my phone and not just get excited because it has lists of new features. There are people who think the S versions had the real updates but ..
And if Apple calls it a 6 but has all the features expected then you'll wait until a iPhone 11x.
Why do so many people think other people care what they buy and why? Sure Apple and Samsung do but why does everyone on this board think everyone cares what you do and why.

Not that anyone should care what I think but the real benefits of hardware and software upgrades are the increased functionality they provide to application developers to write better and feature richer applications.

Do people really expect Apple to totally redesign their phones every year? The only reason the Android manufacturers kept changing designs over and over is because they couldn't figure out what worked. Apple feels like they already had the winning design in the iPhone 4 and so far have just chosen to tweak that design.

Even Samsung who many here are praising barely changed anything from the S3 to the S4 since they finally got a phone that sold well and worked.

If you want change every year then you should look to one of the struggling smartphone manufacturers who are still releasing several different designs a year scrambling to figure out what works. Then you can be surprised and excited every 6 months.

I don't think anyone expects that. We're just simply not that excited because we all know that there won't be any major upgrades in the iPhone 5S.

I have to disagree.. I bought the iPhone 4S and my cousin had the 4... Please it's really more than a light upgrade! Apple stated 2x CPU speed and 7x GPU speed, and believe me, the 4s was a lot faster with better camara and slightly different screen color configuration... Tried playing Blade Infinity II on the 4S and 4? It was a lot better on the 4s speed wise an graphic wise... So if you think the S are nothing new... I would prefer to buy the S version! I'm hopping that the iPhone 6 has a larger screen, something like 4,3 or 4,7, I tried the galaxy s2 for some months, it was an awesome size, problem is all the buttons and design on it are huge so the big screen doesn't allow a lot of info... I would definitely prefer to buy the 6S (if they come with a larger screen) but I'm not sure I can wait so long! I'm already waiting impatiently! I'm currently using a 3GS from my GF and she is trying out my GS2... I sold my 4S some months ago, still got 400€ euros for it and bought it for 565€.. That's another factor I like about apple products!

Its just a phone. I've yet to be excited about any gadget that is necessity.

What do you guys do with your phones that is so exciting anyway? Angry birds? Tapatalk? Yawn.

The market is saturated. Everyone has a smartphone; they're not new or exciting any more. They changed our lives, that's great, we get it, but now they're changed and it's done (and some of us were fine with our lives before, thank you very much).

I was a bit late to the smartphone craze (didn't get one until 2010) so I had a couple of years of excitement, but like everything with time and age that fades. I'll upgrade my phone, sure, when it's warranted; I'll absolutely get the best that's available, but only so it will last me longer. It's going to take quite a bit to get me excited about phones again.

This is a good thing. I spend less money this way.

You're five years older. You've grown up. You've realised there's more important things in life than having someone on the bus say "Excuse me, is that the new iPhone?"

The only people who queue for hours to buy a mobile telephone are teenagers, geeks and people who have no friends.

This.

The fact is we've all grown up, the smartphone market has matured, and expecting a 7th generation iPhone to change your life and be revolutionary is like expecting your next car to hover, or your next computer to run on nuclear fusion or something... the fact is the iPhone is pretty much what it needs to be already and is destined now for many years of evolution, not revolution, just like the competition.

Love the phone, but it is still just a phone.

Mmmmm, can't comment on behalf of others but I use my phone extensively throughout the course of the day.

Receiving and replying to emails both personal and work related.
Use WhatsApp extensively to communicate with both family and work associates.
The occasional Twitter and Facebook.
The occasional remote session both personal and work related.
It's my alarm clock as well as electronic notebook and events planner.
I use the music app extensively when in the gym or using public transport.
Then there's the Map app for when I'm lost.
I use the voice recorder occasionally too, just yesterday in fact to record a disciplinary hearing I was chairing.
Then there's the convenience of having a reasonable quality camera permanently on hand!!

I get that in the grand scheme of things that it is just a piece of electronics but really the impact it has on our lives is immense, perhaps detrimentally so!!!

I fully understand people's obsession with their phones!!!

i have been on board with the iPhone since day 1 paying $599 in 2007. Every yr. i have upgraded to get the newest model this year i am seriously thinking about holding out. The "S" models have been a total fail if you think about it adding a few new features that really doesnt justify using an upgrade on, even tho the current iPhone i think is at its best design it is damn near impossible to keep it in like new conidition naked. i seriously think if i wasnt so invested into apple and the iPhone that i would switch to an android device as i dont think apple will ever be the same without Steve Jobs. Apple now has let android bypass them and anything they do know would be just coping android.

Just my Rant on how I see things

I agree .... first time not excited. I've been upgrading every year since the 3 but unless there's something more compelling than a faster processor, better camera and a fingerprint scanner, I'll wait. I have the 5 now and it's fine. Seriously, how much faster does a phone need to be? We're talking about a fraction of a second for most apps to open and since I got my iPad, I don't do any real gaming on my iPhone. About the only thing that would make me think twice would be a smaller bezel so that they could keep the same form factor and have a larger viewing screen. I'm a huge fan of Apple and I own pretty much everything they've put out in the last 10 years but I'll admit, the magic is wearing off for me.

I don't know, but this is the first year that it feels like Apple is playing "catch up" to a lot of the other phones. Based on the rumors, I repeat, based purely on the rumors, it doesn't sound like the 5S is going to make up the lost ground.

I hope I am wrong because I am due for an upgrade this fall and the 5S will be my next phone (unless I decide to wait for "6"). I am not going to leave the Apple ecosystem. Android apps suck.

Sadly, I feel the same. I started with the 3GS, then the 4 (waited in line), then the 4S, and then the 5 (pre-order sent to house).

I see no reason to upgrade.

Expectations are a bit high then imo. Why in the world do you expect every. single. product. Apple releases to knock the socks off the collective planet? They're great, but no company can innovate like that.

i love how people r wishing for larger screen and also complained about android phones screen being too big for a phone.

a lil hypocrite dont u think

Which brings up an interesting question. In this world of over-saturated smart phones with an over abundance of options, what feature actually would be a tipping point to upgrade? Are there any more "one more thing/wow features" out there? As I said in my earlier post, about the only thing for me would be less bezel and larger screen with the same form factor. Everything else is software related.

(And when I say larger screen, I don't mean larger phone. Just some way for Apple to use more of the real estate they have on the front for viewing.)

What I don't get is people's obsession with getting every new model, because I can do everything you just listed on my 3Gs, and that's soon to be four generations old.

I don't think the people are the same. There are 3 lines of thought here IMO.

1. People that want a bigger screen.
2. People that don't want a bigger phone (they are ok if a bigger screen is squeezed onto the current size).
3. People that mention how unwieldy the competition is only because Apple doesn't make it.

I'm between 1 and 2. I don't care if it gets bigger but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if it did.
