If I were you, I would cover it whatever Siri does on your iPhone 13. So far whether they're running the current version or the latest beta which today is 18.3, Siri is no better than actually seems a little bit worse and more confused than it was before we started this marketing campaign for Apple ignorance, sorry whatever they're calling it. Also be glad that you can still copy and paste from my email or text message, without some ridiculous multichoice questionnaire, opening up adding extra layers of button presses as I try to find copy paste. Of course, you're missing out on your phone, offering to rewrite your messages with different moods, but at the end of the day you'll still be dismayed because no matter what mood you have it rewrite, and it just gets worse than what you had. In short, most of these features are not working. Tim Cook, marketing team, engineers, why not just Holt where you're at right now and fix everything you've already rushed to market. Between this, and the botched dictation on my MacBook Pro 14 M4 still not working properly. I'm seriously thinking surface pro with the elite X chip and an android phone.
reading your post whinge about AI not being able to improve with a rewrite of your text and being worse than what you wrote... pretty sure AI would come up for air and hit a Return key once in a while... and spell better. Holt?

And can you post a photo of your Macbook Pro 14 M4 for me?
Perhaps using your new Surface Pro or Android phone...

Considering how... questionable... some of Apple Intelligence's notifications currently are, I wonder if it'll actually do a good job figuring out what's important and what's not...?
With current technology, I think the answer is no.

It’s a coin flip whether it’s ac really a summary of the original, or something else. The many times misleading errors make the correct summaries pointless for my purposes as I have to check the original to see if the summary is accurate.

The writing tools are ok, but I don’t use them that much.

Other than that, Apple Intelligence is wholly underwhelming, even taking into account its in beta, which is almost a cop-out given they’re not really pushing it as such. Siri with “Apple Intelligence” is worse than Siri of a decade ago.

Why is Mac Rumors perpetuating the canard of “Apple Intelligence devices”? They are simply phones with at least 8 GB OF RAM. The iPhone 13 mini this is being typed on would surely be capable of handling AI if it had more RAM. I wonder what percentage of iPhones in use around the world are AI-capable. One percent?

lovely …. Just lovely

The Vietnamese is staying at home and use AI stuff to kill to time because they still don’t have turn by turn navigation in Apple Maps

Apple hardly is first, but they usually do things better. So I’m confident in Apple Intelligence.
What really is a shame is the fact that Apple AI is limited to the US and a few other countries. Siri is localized in many languages. Same for ChatGPT. I see no reasons for this limitation.

This time it is very different. They missed the AI hype train completely. Now they are trying to stitch together whatever they can. And they have to partner with OpenAI in attempt to convince people that they know what they are doing.

The result; this current mess

I would settle for Siri understanding what I say. Half the time it is:

Me: "Set a timer for 10 minutes"
Siri: "Calling Tina"

It is useless. To me, at least.

aw, you're taking the air out of the whinging :)

the amount of ignorance and negativity on here about new products and software make me wonder some days.

If you dont like the new hardware, don't buy it.
If you dont like AI stuff, turn it off.

it's pretty simple...
That’s quite typical of this forum, where haters and serial complainers are a relevant part of the audience

No they didn’t. AI on smartphones still is a gimmick, even on more advanced implementations like Android and Samsung in particular. AI development still is in its infancy, and Apple has plenty of resources to catch up.

This NEVER happened to me or my relatives in more than 5 years. And not even using a different language speaking to Siri. So you are making things up or you do have serious pronunciation problems

I agree... Siri has issues but it's a LOOOOOONG stretch to say it cant set a timer. That's one thing it does... even down to converting your "set an alarm for 10 minutes" into a timer...

I guess I'm just missing seeing posts from the regular EU fans. Surely MR need another post about a fine to whip up a posting frenzy of "Evil Apple deserve everything and Tim Apple needs to go and their new products are lame and their software sux..."

And what if they do? No speech recognition for people with pronunciation problems?
Rule #1 of IT: garbage in, garbage out.

Doesnt matter if you can't speak or type or use a joystick controller. If you can't get the right input you won't get the right output. It really is that simple.

Apple's accessibility has always been great catering for a small group who assistive tech can have a huge positive impact.

I worked with a CP client. Sadly he had delayed speech and wasn't able to get his ideas out quickly enough for voice input to work. And he was blind so typing with his physical ability also wasnt possible.

What did change his entertainment options was Audio Descriptions on movies. Opened a world of stuff to him far beyond audio books. Not an Apple only option but it's great when tech levels the playing field and makes people feel included.

My wife is English born and is soft spoken. We have the really great original room speakers (Black and White to identify them as left and right in the app). Siri could not understand her voice for many years to control volume or select music.

Siri can now understand most of her commands. So there has been some improvement.

Our use of Siri seems to be for timers and maybe getting the time in a different location. Sometimes, trying to get a selected destination address in Phoenix is still a challenge for Siri, even for me.

I believe if the basics are unstable, there's no way to build on that. It would be like trying to build a multistory house on quick sand. Probably never get above one floor.

So Sri needs to be rock solid on the simple requests before branching out to complex issues.

If you have pronunciation problems just type your commands.

Again, iPod Minis are recognizing every command I’m giving them. I don’t overspeak to my appliances, so I’m using to switch it off, can the volume level, set timers, reminders and so on…
Siri improved over the years, and the same will surely be for Apple Intelligence. We are looking at the first iteration and it’s not even completed!

Siri doesn't need actual speech disabilities to malfunction and it's not what I'm hinting at. If English is your second language and you have an odd accent, it will degrade its recognition abilities severely. And no, this is not a case of "Garbage in, garbage out", this is a case of using a ten-year-old SOTA in production still. OpenAI's Whisper is perfectly capable of these things.

See above. The technology is there, it's just that Apple is refusing to implement it for reasons I can't grasp.

I was really hoping Siri would be usable with AI but it's almost as useless as before.

While driving:

"Siri"
"Siri"
"SIRI!"
"SIRI!!!"

*Screen glows with stupid colors*

"Play the latest Thrown album"
"Here's 60's jazz playlist"
"No! NO!"
*ignores*
"Siri!"
"SIRI!"

*glows*

"PLAY. THE. LATEST. THROWN ALBUM"
"Here's a throwback playlist"

"SIRI YOU IDIOT! OK PLAY *some other artist*"
"Here's X artist's blabla"
"Siri, turn the volume up by 30%"
"I turned the volume up"

Keeps the volume pretty much ducked to 2% for 20 seconds until you can actually hear the volume change

English IS my second language, and Siri is working just fine, for my needs.

I really start thinking people here is making things up just to bash Apple.

In my opinion, apple's marketing of this stuff is just off and misleading. Not very apple like. It appears the intent was for it to be all ready at the release of iOS 18, as the marketing would lead you to believe. They should have changed their marketing to say something like new stuff coming next few months, or just waited.

I wonder if the phrase "It will work when some place really hot freezes over" is applicable to Apple's AI efforts?

It would smarter to not announce a feature before it is truly operational than to put out a flaky operational piece of software that just upsets the client base.

The phrase "It just works" has fallen from Apple's vocabulary. It has been replaced with "it might work but you report the problems which we might fix sometime in the undetermined future."

i let myself get a tad excited about some of this at WWDC but as the features have come rolling in, I’ve liked them less and less. The playground doesn’t work with a lot of the criteria and is quite frankly horrifying most of the time, Siri is still dumb as a box of rocks and can‘t answer my questions most of the time and everything else is kinda meh.

Maybe we just peaked and most of the excitement should go towards new technologies like a cheaper mass market vision
