The result is a desktop surface with a Logitech mouse. Apple having some intention and reasoning behind the design does not mean it is no failure.

No many people use their Logitech wired and wireless.

Logitech devices are useful but uglier than sin.

Apple’s objective was to create a mouse that will ONLY be used wirelessly and has no visible ports and ugliness.

So the only way you can do that is to put the charging port underneath.

The best way to do that is on a charging mat, but that charging mat for mice wasn’t possible at the time.

About time nothing should be lightning as of 2 years ago already but it is apple after all.

The only way I’m moving from an iPhone 13 pro is of the 14 comes with USBC. Same for AirPods. At this point I’m not buying anything new that isn’t usb c.
This loyalty to a connector is impressive. I have maybe 15-25 proprietary charging connectors in my house. All sorts of devices that come with their unique charger from kids toys to hair care products to my electric razor. I live with these everyday. I don’t understand why in a world of so many types of chargers I care that a certain category of product has one type of fragile connector.

The USB-C cable fitting is much more fragile than my Lightning “tongue”. Have had two USB-C cables get slightly squashed this week. Had to be trashed. They are not as robust.

None of our vehicles have USB-C, Just USB-A. Wife has 2020 Toyota RAV4 and I have a 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser, The other vehicles are 2012 and 2003.

The marketing claim is that USB-C can support much higher transfer rates. Those special high speed cables are over $100 for the top speeds. The $20 versions are not that capable.

The Lightning cables are not speedy data transfer either.

Just speaking of the products that are portable and/ or I travel with. I use a manual razor, shave my hair that is balding 😂, and any kids toys use USBc or 2/3 prong outlet connectors. I guess I don’t use many connectors.

This is just to let the EUgo countries have a port that is just as modern as their Ego automobile.
You want USB-C?
Id rather have ThunderBolt 5 (coming to an Apple device near you)!

You... you know that USB-A to USB-C cables are a pretty common thing, right?

Yeah, because we all know the world has a crippling shortage of USB-A to USB-C cables. Why don’t they produce more of them?! /s

Many new cars already come with USB-C ports. And wireless CarPlay, for that matter.

Oh, do they? All the new cars are equipped with USB-C as far as I can see.

But I agree with you that a $10 USB cable causes pain, when you buy a new $1000 iPhone. 🤦‍♂️

If a $10 cable is painful for someone to acquire, maybe they shouldn't be buying a $700+ phone.
Thanks for the sarcasm and passionate responses. I’ll use the better word “inconvenience” next time, but I’m glad there’s people out there that care about this topic.

Curious, what is an Ego country, and follow up question, what exactly is an Ego automobile?

We will likely upgrade phones this year as we switch carriers. I typically buy the base flagship, but would upgrade to the pro if it meant USB c. We could push it another year too, but it just feels like leaving money on the table with the free devices deals they always run. Everything else we use/charge utilizes C at this point, even by kid's $30 over the eat headphones lol. Do me a solid please, Apple!

The transition will be painful for wired CarPlay, since a USB-C iPhone will need an adapter to connect to a USB-A port in cars.

The USB-C to USB-C cable that would be included would be no good since most cars have USB-A ports, and any lightning to USB-A cables would be useless, too.
A single A to C cable for the car doesn't seem like an unreasonable or painful purchase, and can be had for really cheap from a handful of retailers. I think it would be a minor inconvenience for most. If they charge anything else in the car with usb c they probably already have the cable anyway. Apple is already shipping C to lightning cables in their new phones, so if you need A in your car you're resorting to an adapter or different cable anyway.

Here's a link to an A to C from Best Buy for $1.50.

USB-C on a Magic Mouse? Oh, please! Charging on the bottom is a big F.U. mess. Nothing like having to stop work during the day when Notification Manager decides it’s good enough to wait until your mouse is down to 2% critically low charge to let you know what‘s up. What a complete UX fail.

Apple should just bring back the battery-powered Mouse if they can’t figure that out.
I have purposely avoided a rechargeable mouse. AA last forever.

This is a common misconception. USB-C only refers to the physical connector. Faster charging is USB-PD (Power Delivery) standard. Many USB-C charger and cables out there don’t actually support USB-PD.

USB PD requires USB-C. There is no official standard to deliver more than 5V over a USB A connector/cable.

So the OP’s statement was correct: USB-C offers faster charging speeds compared to USB A.

I still have some old AA Magic Mice. They tend to develop issues with the batteries losing contact over time, so you’re forever opening them up and wiggling the batteries around to get them to work. Very annoying! They’re also a lot heavier than the rechargeable version. And if you’re using single-use AA cells, it’s not very environmentally friendly.

IMO, the modern rechargeable version is a big improvement in all aspects.

Yes, USB-PD requires USB-C, but USB-C does NOT require USB-PD. So my point stands. Plenty of USB-C chargers and cables not supporting USB-PD, resulting in the standard "slow" charging speed.

I guess it's not going to be a long wait when I can dump my 15 or so lightning cables into the garbage.
Well, you can always give a few of those away when you're trading in your old iPhone/iPad or giving your old iPhone/iPad to your family members so they have backup cables.

USB-C should have launched on the 11 Pro as the first 'Pro' iPhone. And it was a joke it didn't make it to the 13 Pro with ProRes and ProRAW. I will upgrade to the 15 Pro likely just for USB-C. Then I can finally dump lightning. Not that I don't like lightning, but nothing else uses it.

Yay time to flood landfills with all the lightning products that will suddenly be useless. Adapters, cables, older products that may still use lightning.

I'm so glad I will be forced to pay a ton of money to buy all new stuff. Thanks EU! Thanks for helping me spend my money and throw out stuff. What a great time to do it too! Hey inflation is on the rise and maybe a recession. Lets now force people to replace all their expensive lightning devices. Way to look out for the rest of us.

Maybe I can just send a check to the EU instead of them getting a payout from whoever greased their palms to do this.
You could literally use that argument for any and every point in progress for the past 150 years. And it's a ridiculous argument, I mean if a manufacturer didn't ever change a product - or countries set standards on industrial and technology standards - because of the "Thanks for that!!" crowd, nothing would ever change. Literally. We'd still be using floppy disks because of not wanting to upset people who had invested in the disks.

And your landfill argument is completely flawed. Yes, they'll be a very short period of time where people are buying extra cables because of transitioning from lightning to USB-C, but with USB-C being a universal connector that's being adopted industry-wide, that consumers will use across multiple devices, it'll lead to far less cables being manufactured in the long term.
