Rumors suggest Apple will announce new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models as soon as next month. The new iPads will be the first update to the iPad Pro series since April 2021 and will be an overall incremental upgrade that brings new capabilities and functionality to the highest-end iPad.

According to reports, Apple is planning an event for October to announce the new iPad Pro models, a new baseline iPad, and updates to the Mac. As we approach October, we've outlined the five biggest features and changes we might see for the upcoming iPad Pro.

Wireless Charging

The next iPad Pro is expected to include some form of wireless charging capability, according to a report from Bloomberg. Per reports, Apple has tested a glass back instead of an aluminum enclosure or using a larger glass Apple logo for the upcoming iPads, which would allow for wireless charging, although Apple has experienced some challenges implementing the technology. Apple is also reportedly considering adding MagSafe to the iPad, but how it would be implemented remains unknown.

New Connector

The upcoming iPad Pro will reportedly feature two new four-pin connectors of some sort, distinguished from the current three-pin Smart Connector in the iPad Pro. The current three-pin Smart Connector in the iPad Pro is used to connect accessories such as the Magic Keyboard. The inclusion of an updated four-pin connector could expand the type of accessories supported on the iPad.

M2 Chip

The current iPad Pro features the M1 Apple silicon chip announced in November 2020. The M1 chip was the Apple's first Mac-specific custom processor, and a few months later it also came to the iPad Pro. For the upcoming iPad Pro, Apple is expected to use the newer M2 chip, announced this past June. The M2 chip is up to 20% faster than the M1 chip, according to Apple.

In the iPad Pro, the M2 chip will power features such as Stage Manager, coming with iPadOS 16, which lets users link an iPad to an external display and have overlapping windows. iPadOS 16 will be released in October, according to Apple, most likely alongside the updated iPad Pro.

New Apple Pencil?

A video in April 2021 allegedly showcased the third-generation Apple Pencil with a glossy finish and a redesigned tip. Despite the alleged leak, Apple has not announced a new Apple Pencil since the second-generation model debuted in 2018, making it almost four years old.

It's been over a year since we've heard any significant rumors about a new Apple Pencil, so it's unclear where things stand at the moment. If there is indeed a new Apple Pencil coming, we aren't expecting major design changes but there could be some improvements to latency thanks to internal hardware upgrades and software optimizations.

Reverse Wireless Charging?

According to Bloomberg, Apple has tested reverse wireless charging for the iPad Pro, which would allow iPad users to charge their AirPods or iPhone by laying them on the back of the iPad. Rumors have suggested Apple eventually plans to bring bilateral charging to the ‌iPhone‌ for accessories such as AirPods, but that has not yet happened.

Here is what Apple needs to do with their 2022 IPad Pro M2…

Add a second USBC port on the other end of the Magic Keyboard with 100W Passthrough power to give your external display it’s own power supply without draining the IPad.

That’ll supply enough power to wirelessly charge all capable devices through the magic keyboard when it’s closed.

I already have straps on the back of my Magic Keyboard to carry stuff like my QI Magnetic wireless chargers.. Also, I could put my phone in one of those pockets while traveling to charge on the go.

Ideally a second USB C port on the IPad to allow 2 External monitors.

Front facing camera to be centered in Landscape mode with Dynamic Island.

Remove the IPad borders and curve the outer screen. (I’m sorry but not sorry, nobody uses and IPad Pro like a normal IPad… IPad Pros are used as main computers that stay stationary on keyboards most of the time so we don’t need that extra black wrap around, we need more screen real estate.

It would be really hard for me to justify upgrading my M1 2TB iPad Pro. I love the keyboard and I have the 11inch. I think it is honestly perfect. I wouldn’t want to trade it for anything else to be honest. Apple would have to do something crazy like, give it multiple USBC ports or something like that. My 11inch iPad Pro still works fantastic.

2020 models, too. It'll have been 29 months since that one when the 2022 model is released.
Possibly, but I suspect the iPad refresh cycle is more inline with that of a Mac rather than an iPhone. So 3-5+ years average I bet.

I’m still running a 2017 iPad, so even a marginal performance/spec boost over the 21 iPads is going to be a massive jump up for me.

Hoping for 2000 nits peak brightness, same as the iPhone 14 Pro. It would help tremendously with the bright sun in the cockpit.

Glass back? No. My 11” Pro has a cracked screen from one mishandling. Doubling the opportunity for brokenness? No
Landscape camera? YES!
Having to buy a new keyboard too? Hell no.

They need to copy some of the TabS8 Ultra features and windows tablets i think. No shame in it. Plus go some in other areas they excel.

Would be sweet if the new ipads came with:
1. 14 inch screen (16x10 would be best for media, but i know would upset a lot of apps) so unlikely.
2. Oled or micro LED with Max Brightness 1200nits+. (Peak upto 2k)
3. Camera on the side - its in the wrong place.
4. Jump into MacOS
5. Smaller bezels again (only slightly)
6. Pen charging on the back in addition to the top. I like the way the TabS8 hides the pen.
7. 2x USB C ports. both carrying charge.
8. Maybe 24 or 32gb option if you can jump into MacOs.
9. Wireless charging is a bonus.
10. waterproofing

Will keep dreaming I suppose.

phones and tablets should have removable aluminum backs, for easy battery replacement.
Oh wait, that might allow people to use their electronics for too long and hurt sales... darn.
Aluminium back blocks wireless charging (QI / MagSafe).
But agree it should be like latest iPhone 14 where back is separated easily.

Except for the pen and waterproofing, Apple already makes this. It’s called the 14 inch MacBook Pro.
