Activision Blizzard? The one company that literally abandons the entire StarCraft franchise? I’d be hard pressed to see they update all of their own “supported” game into something that can run natively on M1, let alone optimizing them.
At no point did I say they've ported all their games to M1 or that they were going to. They were actually the first company to release a native M1 game (WoW) before anyone else.

I’m not targeting your comment, and I know WOW has been converted to M1 compatible application already. Doesn’t mean it will be optimised much down the line or anything.

Honest question: which features, specifically, does DirectX have which limits what game devs can do? I've heard loads of praise from GPU folks, including forum members like @leman for Metal api's in terms of both ease-of-use and completeness. I think the only "negative" I've seen had to do with a very specific batching method for ray tracing that is incredibly error prone in Vulkan/DX, which Metal api's do automatically for you, rather than requiring lower-level (and error-prone) implementation.
 
I’m not a gamer but I imagine they would be laughing at this article. Wow look! If you spend $5k on a laptop you can play Tomb Raider at 1080p and 60fps!!! Don’t get a Mac if you want to do serious gaming.

If it makes you feel better gamers were laughing at us long before this article came out.

True PC gamers want highly customizable hardware that consumes so much power that it can double as a space heater. Macs were never in serious contention.
 
I played League of Legends for the first time in years since I found out they have a Mac client and it was as miserable as I remember it
runs really good on Mac though at high settings
 
Hey guys, I have an idea: how about running Commodore 64 games? Those won’t eat hardware at all and surely can run smoothly. ?

Jokes aside, sensible people should NEVER buy Mac for gaming. Apple doesn’t even care about gaming on Mac. On the other hand, if Mac hardware is good enough, one can install QEMU and Windows XP/7/10 x86 version on it to run windows games. That should be what Mac gaming is.

Not that impressive, a 10fps jump from 50-60 on 1080p on a old title... what am I missing? Or am I just so used to Nvidia specs showing 4k raytracing and 60fps on a brand new title.

If it is native, it runs well. If it is not native, it has issues. Which is what happens with all software running on AS Mac.


Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the most high-performing games on Apple's custom chip architecture, despite not being an optimized Mac port that takes advantage of the macOS Metal graphics API.

Metro Exodus ... Even though the game requires Apple's Rosetta translation layer to run.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided ... Another macOS port that is still x86-only and therefore requires Arm translation via Rosetta.

Fortunately, Troy runs natively on Apple silicon, and the M1 Max clearly leverages the optimized code and achieves some blistering frame rates. At 1080p on high settings, the game consistently exceeds 100fps, while the M1 Pro manages 60-70fps at the same resolution.

Baldur's Gate 3 ... Happily, the triple-A title runs natively on Apple silicon, and in 1080p resolution on Ultra settings, both the 14-inch M1 Pro and 16-inch M1 Max consistently hit 90-100fps.

What a hysterical article. Nobody, and I mean nobody who is even remotely serious about gaming gets anywhere near a Mac. Macs are not for gaming.

What I see is that some AAA games released as recently as 1-2 years ago run well on the mac, a platform that has been lambasted as incapable of running AAA games.

Let's see what happens in the next 2-3 years, when all macs have capable hardware.

And when rosetta is gone.
 

It irks me. I know it's my problem, and it's unreasonable, but it's like watching someone buy a Jeep Wrangler to drive around the city. Macs are the most sophisticated tools in the design industry, and for them to be tainted by l33t g4m3r$ obsessing over "Max FPS" just sort of weakens the brand and everything it stands for.
 
Each to their own and all that but I just don't see the point in playing games on a PC or Mac. Just get yourself a PS5 or Xbox. When you're playing the game and immersed in the experience it's impossible to tell the difference in the tiny details.

As I said, each to there own but whatever floats your boat.

As a 40 year old dad of a three year old that hasn’t had time to play any of these games yet… this is awesome! I don’t even own a console because I don’t have time for that.

I currently have a 2019 13” MBP that I use for my professional photography… but I ALSO use GeforceNow on it to play Witcher 3 and City Skylines (works great) when I have a spare moment (a couple of times a week).

Those of us that have Macs because it’s how we like to _work_ will love the ability to play these games natively at a nice fps and resolution.

Im not joking: _this_ article is making me want to upgrade to that 14” M1. It will definitely help my photography workflow _some_… but also being able to play some newer games on it seals the deal.

If you only get to play a handful of hours a week, investing in a console isn’t worth it. But playing games on the machine you also need for work… that’s awesome!

Good point. I guess I was looking at it from those saying Macs aren't any good for gaming because they can't compare with the best rig in the house!

I'd agree with you, if you only have a few hours, running the likes of Tomb Raider, which quite frankly is not that old in the grand scheme of things and still a great game, would be good fun.
