And who killed the iPod? Apple!
They didn't kill it. It basically merged into the iPhone. They held onto it for years long after the iPhone became extremely popular. But in business you have to weigh out the amount of sales vs. stock. With people using their iPhones for practically everything I'm sure Apple's iPod sales declined a great deal so it made sense to stop production.

Well, but my unspoken point, sorry, was that Apple killed their own product. They incorporated the iPod into the iHone, and eventually, after making so many incredible versions of them, killed them. No one else did. Hell, Sony refused to put music on their phones, according to an article I read, because they were afraid of losing the sales from their Walkman devices. Apple said '*SHRUG* Let's put the functionality of the iPod into the iPhone. People won't have to carry both, unless they really want to. Let's do it!' And they did. The idea that a corporation would kill a product line, and displace staff like that is so bizarre. According to the article I read, Sony, and many other companies thought Apple crazy for cannibalizing their own products. I think someone said 'Insane'.

Profit is profit. Apple just pivoted and kept making money. Sony killed their phone, and Walkman lines for being too tentative, and slow to stay in business. Well, and Windows Phones did suck...

Great review (as always)...last I checked a person pretty much still gets what a person pays for....4 Examples / thoughts as a person often hears the plight or the cry of the people about Apple and costs...but are they really that expensive? Perhaps not when a person really considers everything...

Example A) Just like iPhones...are they super expensive or a great value? IF a person considers that next years Android's flagship models are twice as SLOW as last years A13 iPhone 11 models (and never mind that a person is getting a fantastic GPS that used to be a separate Garmin device, or what used to be a multi-thousand dollar DSL camera not very long ago). Is it expensive? Mmmm...

Example B) Go to Dell.com and look up AlienWare laptops and configure one that really has the same exact speed SSD and abilities as even a 16" 2.4 GHz i9 (never mind the M1 Silicon that is blowing them out of the water)...a person will find that equivalent Dell AlienWare laptops are both thicker, not as pleasing to look at...AND as expensive or more expensive.

Example C) I've heard people say the 27" iMac is soooo expensive. Well is it? Last I checked if a person goes to Amazon and orders the LG Ultra Fine 27' it is is between $1,249 to $1,279...now subtract the cost of the display from the $2,099 27" iMac (which still has much better speakers and etc.)...that means a person gets the iMac computer part, a machined keyboard and mouse for $850 (that's a great value for a good computer).

Example D) is Less of an Example, and more of a statement or quote. Larry Norman was literally my neighbor from across the street in lil' ole Salem, Oregon (Larry was considered to be 1 of the 3 "Fathers or Christian Rock")...I was talking to him one time long ago before he passed about how it was hard for me to charge for my technical services and consulting...and he told me, as we sat around my kitchenette table (so surreal to talk to Larry)...that all he ever wanted to do was do free concerts, but that it didn't really take off until a person has to pay for something...and that I should never be embarrassed to charge for my valuable past Apple Sales / Apple Level III Tech abilities...BECAUSE paying for something that is truly worth it projects value. Plus, it then also gains respect, as well, because a person is paying for it unapologetically.

I always thought that was so very interesting and so valuable coming from such a humble yet so famous person. So, like a Gary Larson Cartoon about Blah Blah Blah what Dog's Hear (look it up for a good laugh).

I've listened to them and I've personally owned Sony's and Bose QC II 35, and AirPod Pros and even listened to Bang-Olufsen Beoply H9 $500 and Beoplay H95 Headphones...and just like many other reviews who concur...If the AirPod Max IS the best or even if it's just comparable, as good, or equal to Bang in Olson $800 headphones. Then it's about value...where else can people by an $800 sounding headphone that is as classy for $550?

It's NEVER just one thing with Apple...it is about the quantitative all encompassing details that add up to even more and more value. Just like Steve used to say, Making things easy is hard...an that costs something. If a person cannot see the details, they don't have to buy it...no body is twisting their arms. People buy because of two (2) things, they either Trust you and/or your product, OR they see the Value in you and/or your product.

Anyway hope that might provoke some food for thought or perhaps a different perspective...sure appreciate all that MacRumors does!!!

Value is indeed what the individual places on things, totally. I can see why some would find value in the AirPods Max if they are totally bought into the design and like a softer sound with less bass. I can also see why others would prefer a different brand that they may deem superior in features and lower in price. It’s our money at the end of the day. Most of my friends aren’t into phones and think it’s comical that I would spend £849 on an iPhone 12. These same people live in £300k+ houses and drive £30k cars though lol, so value on anything is relative.

Did you seriously just compare the airpods max to iphone and imac? LMAO

Incredibly overpriced and the only reasons I can think of to own these:

1. Spacial audio (this is brilliant)
2. Hey look, I have a pair of AirPods Max
3. Yes, I have a case that makes my headphones look like a handbag.

:)

Doesn’t strike me as designed for working out or any sweat producing activities, also taking the weight into consideration.
I’d rather go working out with the AirPods Pro.
I can't imagine using any over-ear headphones in the gym- they ALL get sweaty.

:)
  • Better stereo imaging
  • Better ANC
  • Better, more solid build quality
  • More comfortable (although heavier and comfort is subjective)
  • Adaptive EQ
  • Subjectively better audio quality than virtually any other wireless headphone.
  • Designed for ease of use with Apple devices.

Apart from the price, I can think of a lot of reasons to NOT to buy Sony's, B&O or Bose either in the wireless headphone arena.

At the end of the day, people will buy what they want that fit their requirements and that they feel is the best bang for buck they can afford.

Nice!!! Too bad nothing you said will hurt sales as you apparently are attempting to do based on this post.

Bravo...

I was new with my own company, dealing with my first clients. I had a very kind and wise man who was president of a company I had as a client. He saw my invoice, and told me that they wouldn't use me any longer. I turned to leave, and he asked if I wanted to know why. I bit, 'Why?'. You're service was excellent. You got us up and running quickly. You are knowledgeable and the office staff like you. There is one problem. You aren't charging enough for your services. I doubled the amount, and he laughed, 'Don't get to expensive', so I knocked a little off, and he accepted it, and I had them as I client for over 14 years. It didn't make sense that I wasn't valuable if I changed less. To me, I seemed more valuable, but he said that they would pay a lot more for a less capable large company to do what I did, and they would have to suffer through having different people, where they always get me. This is a bit of a tangent, but really liked the story.

Ironically, I had a friend that was a musician. I was going to have a party, and wanted his band to play for a couple hours. He was late in paying my invoices (I cut him a 'friends and family' rate). I suggested that in stead of paying him, I just forgive the invoices, and he pay his band mates out of that money. You would have thought I asked for his left nut. He came up with a cost, but by that time, the party was a couple of days away, and I'd already made other plans, but it was not 'inexpensive'. We were friends for about a month, and he refused to pay my invoices, so after saying I'm no different than him, 'a performer expecting payment for the performance', he still flipped out. He 'didn't have the money', etc, etc... Then he called a couple of weeks later, a computer had a virus. Yeah, hourss of time to fix that. I said I was busy. I never got my money, but his true colors shown through.

Not, back to talking about the Airpods Max. I'd own them if I had the money to burn. I don't know where I'd use them, but *shrug*...

Of course. They will sell like crazy. I am a potential customer but I won’t buy them.

They are overpriced, but then so is lots of high end audio products. The case is clearly Apple’s attempt at making the case as cheap as possible for more profit. The high price is an obvious attempt to sell as many as possible to China, (a glance at the photos on Apple’s website displays who they are marketing it to and who perceive expensive as a sign of quality). The headphones don’t do anything special to the competition, except spacial audio, which as I mentioned is brilliant.

I have a pair of AirPods Pro. Do they sound great? Not really, deep bass is totally missing, I have a pair of Beats X that sound much better, but the main feature and the reason I keep them is due to spacial audio. It’s really excellent.

Can I afford a pair? Yes. Do I want a pair? no. I have a pair of Beats Solo Pro which sound great. But those who buy a pair, enjoy spacial audio and your new headphone handbag :)

I love Apple products but I am not going to defend a stupid headphone case. What next? A mouse that charges upside down! Haha

Do you have an ATV4K? Watching Netflix, Youtube or other video app?
Think I read the XM3's didn't have the lag problem because of the codec they used but Sony changed it in the XM4's
I had thought about ordering some off Amazon and sending them back in they didn't work out for me.
Yes To everything but APTV. I use them mostly for work. My B&O H95s come out for the listening sessions. Overall, the XM4s are really good all around headphones.

I am a potential customer until the moment I decide not to buy them. It’s up to Apple to convince me to buy them, they failed.
Indeed, everybody is a potential customer if the product is right. Like yourself I haven’t been impressed enough to purchase them. Apple want as many people to buy their products as possible and I doubt they adopt complete arrogance when it comes to choosing who should be interested in what they offer.

I'm thinking of buying the AirPods Max. The primary factor being quality. If my sole motivation changed to spite, would that still be a valid justification?

I am mostly interested in hearing from the angry and disgruntled forum members.

I’d say put an order in and try them out when they ship to you in 2025. Please don’t forget to share your experiences with the device for those disgruntled forum members who may have forgotten all about this by then.

Reactions: Average Pro
LOL $550 for what is basically a set of slightly above average wireless headphones. Apple is really pushing that price boundary into overdrive here. Made in China, but designed and priced in California.

Think you will find most people who are into their music will tell you they are one of the best if not the best wireless headphones out there. It’s very expensive and not for most people but doesn’t mean there’s not a market for them
