Calculate Tip is useless. For one, it's including sales tax, instead of asking for the pre-tax subtotal, and two, it has no rounding function, are you really going to leave a $9.71 tip?

A couple things.
  1. It asks what the bill is. It doesn't ask for pre- or post-tax amount, so I don't understand why you can't just input whichever one you want to calculate the tip with, considering that most bills show both of those amounts. I personally tip on the post-tax amount. If you tip on the pre-tax amount and want the tax added to that amount along with your tip, you can add that to the steps.
  2. You can build in a rounding function if that's so important. I wouldn't think when people are rounding up tips to make them nice, even numbers that they care about being exact, so why are you using a tip calculator to add a rounded, simple number to a bill total, which would be fairly simple and quick in your head? Tip calculators make much more sense for adding a precise tip to a bill amount where it might not be that quick in your head.
  3. Yes, if I'm paying with a card, why does it matter if my tip is exact, down to the cent? If I want to leave 18% and that comes out to $3.27, then I'm going to write $3.27 on the tip line and then write whatever the total was on the total line.
  4. This is a pre-built automation workflow made of customizable steps. Most of the work is already done for you, so if those are the only things that make it useless for your personal needs, customize it to fit what you need and then it can save you time every time you use it. Or you can just continue to do it all manually yourself every time.

While some here may find these shortcuts useful, I don't see any real use for them. It appears to be geared toward the younger user. A lot of the cited examples can be done manually a lot quicker than invoking the Siri shortcut, in my opinion.

I'm in the same boat. I just don't get it.

I swear, If i have to read one more post about a Tip Calculator....

LOL! When the App Store first opened its doors for business there must have been 47 tip calculators among its initial offerings. Apparently, percentages are a difficult concept.

A couple things.

[SNIP]

In the time it took you to write "a couple things," I've already calculated 20 different tips in my head. ;)

It doesn't ask for pre- or post-tax amount, so I don't understand why you can't just input whichever one you want to calculate the tip with

Sure, you could. But what's the point? Just ask Siri what 20% of $XX is. Done. The shortcut is going to provide you with a completed total. But that total will be worthless to you if you're tipping on the pre-tax amount and/or you want to round your tip up or down.

I personally tip on the post-tax amount.

You can do as you wish. Hopefully you're intending to give the server a higher percentage tip and not wanting to tip the state/local government on their contribution to the enjoyment of your meal. ;)

Really? You need a rounding function? You must be an American! So funny!

I calculate a 20% tip in my head. I round it up in my head, too. No, I’m not going to leave $9.71. The server will get $10.00. I don’t need the Calculate Tip shortcut. I merely stated that, as written, it’s pretty useless. I wouldn't be touting it as one of "Five Helpful Shortcuts."

You must be French! So rude! :p

Shortcuts have been a total bust for me.

The time when I really want to issue voice commands to my phone is when I'm on Bluetooth. Not one thing I tried works under lock screen so... (shrug!)

Still useless for the watch correct? I couldn’t ever get it to trigger any installed on my phone through me watch.
I could be wrong, but, I'm going to say it anyway...If the shortcut involves an app that is not on the Watch, it will not work.
[doublepost=1538595251][/doublepost]I don't get a lot of these "shortcuts". Like setting a timer. Or, if you're bad at math and need a tip calculated. Just say "set a timer for x", or "what's 20% of x" o_O
[doublepost=1538595467][/doublepost]To those who want to tip on the pre-tax amount...you shouldn't be dining out. Or, you should sell your iPhone, so that you can afford to dine out.

No, 20% is the minimum people should be tipping. Because as much as we like to cheerlead for a $12 or $15 or $20 minimum wage, service staff will forever be stuck at two or three bucks an hour. No increases for them. Tips have become more important, not less, in America, for people that find themselves in service work.
What about other people in the service industry? Makes no sense to redistribute money between people at the same income level.

I think you should vote for people who’ll change the law, and in the meantime boycott places that don’t pay enough. This system of people being dependant on voluntary donations, AKA charity, for a living is an absurd situation for a rich modern democracy to be in. Of course, I can see the argument that until you can change the system it makes sense to help people out by carrying on with it. I just feel perhaps it perpetuates it. I dunno.

Calculate tip seems decent but I calculate personally based on service, not amount of the bill. Before you reply, I don’t care, I’m not changing.

ANYBODY that has a Nest thermostat should have the app “Thermo Watch”. It works with Siri Shortcuts, and allows you to control the Nest using Siri. At this point, I don’t think Nest is ever going to add HomeKit support. Thermo Watch adds HomeKit-like support...for 3 dollars!
I know there is Homebridge, but, I like not having to leave my iMac on all the time. Also, sometimes Homebridge crashes, or I restart my Mac, and forget to run it.
I contacted the developer today, asking for a command that would start the fan. Heard back right away, and was told it’s in the works and will be updated soon.  :)

If you can’t afford to tip on the whole bill, you can’t afford to go out and eat.

One I use a lot: Remind me when I get home. It lets me enter a message and it will remind me about it when I get home, much faster this way than going through the annoying Reminders app where it takes a whole bunch of clicks to get the same thing done.

Another one: text someone by voice. I often text a specific person when I'm on my way home, probably driving, and can't text. So I press this button, say what I want, and it will transcode it to text and send it to the specific person.

Also fun: Say it in French. You press it, say something, and then it will say it back to you in French. Or any other language. It works surprisingly well, though it doesn't really have any real-world applications unless you're a lost tourist.
Why not just use Siri to “Tell such n such...blah blah blah”. It sends the text. Done.

I believe it works if the app is on the Watch.

Why is nobody talking about how Apple has crippled Shortcuts on the Apple Watch?

Before Shortcuts, you could launch workflows on the Watch with the Workflow watch app. You could enter data, use menus, etc., in powerful custom workflows. Now, nada. The app is gone and no Shortcuts app has replaced it. This was a primary interface to many workflows and now these workflows are unusable.

Yeah, you’re not the only one to wonder those obvious things. And I live here :/

Why is nobody talking about how there aren't any shortcuts for the Apple TV Remote app. Or, the Apple TV itself? I know there is one that will turn it on, but, obviously I want it to do something after that.

Ha.

Sad for those of us who live in the "Land of the Blond White Clown." And I bet that's not as mellifluous in Maori ;)

I particularly like that everyone is excited for calculating tips. Tipping is stupid and needs to be abolished. Tips shouldn't uphold a crap wage, guilting patrons into pity paying service employees.

Because Siri doesn't speak my language, so I can't do that. Dictation, however, does.
[doublepost=1538694408][/doublepost]
...um... am I missing something? can't you just... see when you are home? Is this a joke??

Yes you're missing something. It's a feature that's been in the Reminders app for years. To remind you about something when you get home, or when you leave a location. It's quite useful, I prefer it to timed reminders.
[doublepost=1538694491][/doublepost]
Many of the basic examples people have been giving, such as this one, Siri has been able to do inbuilt for years. e.g. I've been asking Siri to send text message for me via my Apple Watch while I'm driving on an almost daily basis for two years now - I couldn't be without it.

Siri only speaks a handful of languages, so if you speak a language that Siri doesn't understand, you have to resort to a workaround, such as this one. Dictation works in many more languages than Siri, but it's useless if you're driving because you have to unlock the phone, scroll to the right home screen, open the app, press Dication, press Send. With the shortcut you can do it without even touching the phone.
[doublepost=1538694877][/doublepost]
2 of the 3 can be done without shortcuts, it's already been available in siri.

You can just say hey siri remind me to bla bla bla when I get home. and for the 2nd one you can just say, text someone <your message>.

You don't need shortcuts to use those.

Not if you're messaging someone in a language that Siri doesn't understand.

As for "remind me when I get home", yes, Siri can do that, but I like to avoid talking to Siri in public if possible because it makes me feel stupid. So a shortcut lets me do it quietly and quickly without saying a word. And doing it through the Reminders app takes so many steps that it's just not even worth it.

Basically Shortcuts lets me do stuff that augment Siri's abilities, and that are as fast to do as with Siri, but without actually having to use Siri, which is always a plus.

Question, is there now way to dictate a name and search / get a contact based on text or a variable? The only way I see to get a contact is to use the Contact: Select Multiple which shows the contacts app. I would like to get a contact without having to look at the phone and select one from a list.

Saying “Let her know” where the shortcut gets my location, calculates the eta to my house and the time of arrival, and sends it in a text to my wife...extremely useful when I’m on the road (made it myself)

Someone to share a shorcut like this ?

Thanks !

Ahh I see. I wasn't seeing it from that angle. Makes sense and seems useful. Thanks.

The iOS 12 update brought a major new feature, Siri Shortcuts, which is designed to let you create voice and tap-activated automations that can complete multiple complex tasks in just a few seconds.

In our latest YouTube video, we've rounded up five Siri Shortcut options that we think most people will find interesting. These are a great place to start if you're new to Shortcuts.

Siri Shortcuts are available in the Shortcuts section of the Settings app (Settings > Siri & Search) and through the dedicated Shortcuts app, but you can also find great options on Reddit and other websites. The Shortcuts below have been sourced from multiple places.

- Calculate Tip - Perhaps one of the simplest Shortcuts available, Calculate Tip is available in the Shortcuts Gallery. When you activate this Shortcut, it will ask you the total bill and the amount that you want to tip (12%, 15%, 18%, or 20%) before providing you with the tip amount and the total bill with tip included.

- Convert Burst to GIF - With Convert Burst to GIF, sourced from Reddit, you can take a series of burst photos with the iPhone camera by holding down on the capture button and then convert them into a GIF. There are also shortcuts for doing the same thing with a Live Photo in the Shortcuts Gallery.

- Watch Music Video - The Watch Music Video Shortcut, also from Reddit, lets you detect the currently playing Apple Music song and then search for the accompanying music video on Apple Music. If a music video is found, it will open it up in the Apple Music app so you can watch it.

- What's Happening on Twitter - If you have the Twitter app installed, you can create a "See What's Happening" Shortcut that will allow you to view Twitter's Moments section with a Siri voice command. You can access this option by going to Settings > Siri & Search > Twitter > See All.

- Dark Sky Weather - With Dark Sky installed, you can see a weather forecast with information pulled from Dark Sky through a Siri voice command. As with Twitter, you can get to this option through the Siri & Search section of the Settings app. Assigning a command like "What's the weather today" to this third-party Shortcut will let you get weather data from Dark Sky rather than the built-in weather app when you ask Siri about the weather.

Many of the Shortcuts listed above can be tweaked and customized after you have downloaded them if desired, and you can assign Siri voice commands to activate them. For app-based Shortcuts, you can do this in the Settings app, and for longer Shortcuts that have multiple steps, you can add a Siri command in the Shortcuts app.

Do you have favorite Shortcuts that you've been using in iOS 12? Let us know in the comments and we may feature them in a future video.

[doublepost=1539147158][/doublepost]Hi , I have create a shortcut to save a gps location to your Evernote account on the go. This is useful if you are passing by some interesting location and want to save it to come back again there later.

I found out how to do it. It was kind of not intuitive.

Question, is there now way to dictate a name and search / get a contact based on text or a variable? The only way I see to get a contact is to use the Contact: Select Multiple which shows the contacts app. I would like to get a contact without having to look at the phone and select one from a list.

So far, the only shortcut that looks to be useful at all, and not a duplication of existing Siri functionality (for me speaking American English), is the translate text function, which is itself very limited by Safari’s horrible text selection behavior. Also, I have the Google translate app, so...

I’m probably going to delete the app and forget about this “new iOS feature”.

I'm just trying to get Siri to understand me when I say the word 'burst'. Trying to record this word, Siri understands it as 'breasts', 'first', 'rest', 'are', 'post', 'wrist', 'nearest', 'Bristol', 'route' or 'birthday' (that last one was probably the combination of 'burst' and 'to', this attempt resulted in 'Convert birthday gift').

Siri clearly tries to match a complete phrase and 'birthday gift' is ranked more likely to be correct than 'burst to GIF'. I get that Siri normally would do things like picking 'give' over 'GIF' but this is an attempt to record a phrase for a Siri shortcut titled 'Convert burst to GIF'. Siri obviously is not very context aware here. Or rather it only seems to be context aware only when it itself is suggesting a phrase but not when it should try to link the title of a Siri shortcut to its trigger phrase.

If you’re in Apple’s tested speech range, Siri is very useful for extremely basic commands and statements. Go outside the most average vocabulary, though, and it looks as stupid as it actually is (entirely stupid; there’s no such thing as AI, just human-made, algorithms, scripts, and some occasional modifications of them via user input). Speech to text is abysmal for anything even slightly off the most average, or lowest common denominator.

This is a few IOS versions ago but using Siri to create a reminder did not work for me for whatever reason. Tried it 2 or 3 times, searched both Apple and the internet for people having problems with it, found a lot of hatred for Siri but no reasons as to why it didn’t work for me and quit trying to use it. Other Siri features worked from occasionally to reliably but not setting up a Reminder.

Accent? Actually I think others already asked you this.
