I haven't had any problems with my 14 Pro, but I feel that the transition to ESIM will become a major PITA for the people who need to replace their damaged phones, and while waiting for a replacement might want to use an older spare (that needs a physical SIM).

That has been my backup plan for a long time, since the 3G, I always kept the previous generation phones as a spare or foreign travel device, until I started doing the IUP starting with the 8. Still have my old 7+ as a backup device, but with the 14 Pro, really can't use it with a quick SIM swap.

IF this situation is as widespread as some say it seems to be, and IF it actually causes hardware damage, Apple needs to pull out the stops to do an immediate OTA update to disable third-party camera access until a proper fix is developed.

The alternative is mind-boggling to contemplate.

Apple has developed a persistent problem with their culture of secrecy undermining software reliability upon release.

We've seen this with half-baked implementations of software that hinges on new hardware. From what we know about their approach, a small handful of developers get privileged access to test hardware to build out a feature and they're mostly silo'd from collaborative efforts with others in their domain. Only after the hardware becomes public information does the entire institution get their hands on it...and Apple ends up spending the next year's minor update cycle getting the feature up to snuff.

I suspect that this is a more serious rendition of this repetitive failing.
3 trillion dollar market value can cloud every sensible judgement, and let everyone think apple is extremely successful when the hazard is looming silently. Unfortunately, unlike most other companies, apple is way too big to fail at this point and will always come back regardless.

This camera fiasco has put my desire to get iPhone 14 Pro Max on pause. I don’t want a device that will need to be replaced a couple of times due to known issues.

Just got this for the first time when I opened snap chat. I closed it and reopened it and it went away. Very weird, I need to swap this phone out anyway because of another issue but I can’t find one in stock

Happened to me on Snapchat Friday, Saturday and Today(even after the newest Snapchat and instagram iOS updates). Nothing in stock in my area either.

Last night an AppleCare senior engineer told me my phone needed to be replaced. He said he would have to transfer me to sales. Sales said they were setting up a return and replacement. I said they can charge my card for the new phone so that I can send this phone back once I receive the replacement. They said all they could do was send me a return label for my phone and once they receive it, a new order would be placed at the back of the line. She said I would be without a phone for about 6 weeks and am I ready to proceed. I told her that is not going to work for obvious reasons, and she offered to transfer me back to AppleCare. Luke Miani already said his camera’s auto focus was permanently broken from this. I don’t know if I trust a software fix after AppleCare senior engineer already said my phone had to be replaced. I ordered a new phone and will return this one.

During those 6 weeks, your phone would be sent to their repair center. Technically speaking, you would get "refurbished" phone. If I were you, I would return (get refund) and order new one.

I’ve always gotten express replacement as an option. Wonder why they’re not doing it for you this round.

The express shipping only shaves a day or two off the six weeks. It does not put you at the front of the manufacturing queue. If you are talking about AppleCare+ advance replacement, this is through sales as a return/exchange, not a support repair/replacement. It might be too soon after launch day for support to have repair/replacement phones. A sales exchange within the return period also saves someone from having to sit through an hour of going through the motions “troubleshooting.”

Are Apple engineers not allowed to run or use popular 3rd party apps (Snapchat, Tik Tok, Instagram, etc.) on pre-release hardware? This seems like this should've been easily caught and fixed in the testing stages of the 14 Pro.

I'm also a little skeptical that a simple software fix will remedy this.

Ah, that makes sense. Although, the last time I had a release date issue and needed a replacement it went without a hitch, the AppleCare+ folks told me that they set aside units at launch for rush replacements as that is a benefit you’re paying for with AppleCare.

So a possible hardware damaging software problem will be addressed next week? Seems like it should be a little more urgent?
Do you think they should release a fix without testing it works and doesn’t introduce major new problems? You need to be more realistic with your expectations as a reasonable timeframe to fix things.

So I'm just gonna say it....
A software issue can cause hardware issues. If you don't understand how fragile the OIS systems are within a camera, I don't blame you, most people do not deal with cameras on a daily basis. But please do not spread false info on a forum.

This software issue could easily cause hardware issues with the phones optical image stabilization system which uses tiny mechanical pieces within the camera assembly to compensate for movement. The jarring shaking that is caused by this software issue could EASILY cause hardware issues.

Jury is still out on if people should replace their phones though. Will wait a few days and see.
I don’t know anything about OIS, but when I saw the video explaining the issue made me make a “that gotta hurt” frown face.

Just the fact that it sounds! Vibrating and ‘clipping’ loudly (relative to the size), as if it were a low quality tiny speaker trying to blast uncalibrated bass music… for a hardware piece that we are supposed to never ever hear a sound from.

Curious what the bug could be. Looks like as if a fail safe threshold isn’t enforced, as if when overclocking a cpu it never enforces a limit allowing it burn. Or in fact, the same speakers analogy, when overdistorting and over feeding an amplifier busts it.

Or maybe they are very sturdy.

Glad they are able to fix this issue pretty quickly. Hopefully, iOS 16.0.1 will have lots of other bug fixes.

This is not an emergency. This affects 3rd party apps. Not the main camera. The teens can live without posting to to tik tok for a week.
This could be an emergency. And how would you know if they are telling the truth. Apples go to move to everything is a software fix. Sure that’s the simplest and cheapest thing to try first.

But for how much these devices cost these kind of issues shouldn’t be happening.

I’ll tell you this. This wouldn’t be happening if jobs was still around. NO WAY

James

Maybe Apple and it’s thousands of beta testers should actually do their job and beta test iPhones and iOS 16 running normal applications everyone uses every single day installed on their iPhones and not only the applications that Apple makes. They could have saved this mess from happening in the first place, saved face, everyone’s trust and hundreds of thousands of dollars in replacement parts that got damaged due to the issue. Gotta love Tim Cook not testing properly. He has some very bright ideas indeed.
I’m willing to bet more than half of these so called “ BETA TESTERS “ are only signed up to get the new software first and tout, LOOK WHAT I GOT kind of thing.

No everyone can’t test everything for every app but I would of for sure thought this bug would have been noticed

One week??? 😧
No, they can’t!!! 😅
Just think about the amount of followers you might lose with such a long time being quiet on social media. What should your followers think? No exciting life anymore?? That’s not acceptable, apple needs to release this fix asap!!!!

Well they can have it today. But don't complain when it hasn't been adequately tested! :)
