It worked on me! I had never heard of the game until yesterday, when I saw some kind of Mario add-on on cydia. I still wasn't particularly interested. When I saw this, I figured I'd better go ahead and download it in case I want to check it out later.

Yeah, this was probably the idea behind announcing that he would take it down in 24 hours. I think there may be some legal issues creeping up, though he states there are not, and that may be scaring him. Games that garner this much attention and make this much in ad revenue tend to be seen on other developers radars that may have similar games. If you were just going to pull it, then why the 24 hour notice? Wouldn't you just pull it right then? Just doesn't make a lot of sense. I just cannot see pulling this game if it is making $50,000.00 a day on ads and there are no legal issues.

You know, I developed a small indie racing sim for OSX and I would jump for joy with this kind of attention and ad revenue. I would be releasing updates constantly. Take the game down? No way!

The pipes and floors in that game look like they're taken straight from Nintendo.

And? There are plenty of games that blatantly rip off of Nintendo. They're not likely to sue, they have bigger concerns. Also, they'd have to prove that people would have bought their games if only Flappy Bird wasn't there.

None of those stole any images from Nintendo games except maybe one of them. Also, "Most of these have since been altered or removed entirely from the App store since their initial slips past Apple security"

And Apple also changed Derpy's voice because they were afraid it would offend people. I hardly think them removing the game was because Nintendo was afraid their Mario sales were going to slip.

The difference between this and every other game that makes #1 in the App Store is that the guy is being attacked by the media.

Minecraft, Angry Birds, Tiny Wings, etc, they all got a lot of positive pats on the back. This game is getting articles about how it's cheating you of your time, how it's making people go crazy, how the developer is making a bucketload of money off a free app, and the fact that it looks like Super Mario.

Can't even compare him to Phil Fish, who's only real problem was the fact that it took so much to get a game out.

Getting called something by a complete stranger isn't as bad as being called out as something by people who are established in the journalism and gaming businesses. It hurts big time. And obviously having all the frustrations of 10 million+ users is a nightmare for him too.

I hope he gets the peace he deserves.

+1.

Finally, a comment that isn't utterly stupid.

I really really feel bad for him

He's in Vietnam. Prob made so much off the ads he can just retire now lol and live a simple life on a nice beach somewhere. 50k a day goes a long way in countries like Vietnam and Thailand. He's got a lot of Dongs now.

Just downloaded it... Can't get past the first pipe since the past 15 minutes... Aaaaarrrrggghhhh...

P.S.: Is it possible my inebriated state is causing this...? :p

Why can't he just not update it and not put any attention towards it? When sales die down and it's old news and take it down or maybe he'll be able to work on it more and continue its success.

Likely he could be in deep water with Nintendo over the look and feel and theme (flying fish and green pipes) being almost spot-on from Super Mario Brothers. I am guessing Nintendo is kindly asking him to remove it.

Isn't the game basically just the old Helicopter flash game with a reskin?

Else perhaps he has severe anxiety issues / personal things going on, and he doesn't want to deal with anything like this.

And what was Angry Birds or Candy Crush?
Both are shameless ripoffs of old school games with a nice finish.

I think Nintendo has more important things to do. It isn't likely that this is at all affecting their Mario sales.

If the guy doesn't want money, donate the game to the Salvation Army or Wounded Warriors or whatever.
Problem solved.

And that will stop people from bashing him in supposedly reputable media outlets? If only he thought of that.

It doesn't matter. Nintendo has licensing rights for their artwork in their games, and they go after people who try to profiteer off them, which looks like where this was going.

It does matter. Nintendo should be focusing on things that matter, not things like this.

Edit: Also, foreign laws are different. As long as he could prove that he isn't negatively affecting Nintendo's business, they likely wouldn't win.

This guy is my idol. Talk about not giving a damn about money. Reminds me of Dave Chappelle. It's easy to talk about how money isn't important, but doing this kind of thing shows true conviction. Awesome Guy.

This game is devilishly addictive, my best score thus far is 102.

I think despite his comments about it not being a legal issue, Nintendo has leaned on him.
