It's not about the money, it's about what the money gets you. It's security, it's freedom. Freedom from fear, freedom to do whatever you want with your life without financial constraints.

I'm not saying everybody needs to be a billionaire to be happy. But, everybody has a certain amount of money they need to make barriers fall away from their life. It's quite possible this guy feels he's made that much, now, and feels uncomfortable having more than that. That's awfully shortsighted though. He could give money away to charity, save some for his family, etc.

Which can be summarised as, it is about the money.

People are talking smack about him in certain channels all over the internet. He's actually hated.

But, hey, sell off your dignity, be hated worldwide for a bit, endure hate-mail and being under the spotlight, just to lock in a little financial security. Without knowing his previous financial or employment status. Assume he needs the money more than the mental stability. The pursuit of happiness is not limited just to financial independence.

As pointed out by many others, there are alternatives. He can sell his game to somebody else, for example. There's no reason for him to have to be famous.

i wonder how many people downloaded it now, just because its going to be removed.

… in order to keep the money rolling in, because that's the most important thing. Which still wouldn't change anything. People would still be talking about him and despising him - through intermediaries.

It's something that he created that he probably despises now. If its brought him grief, why wouldn't he want to destroy it himself rather than let it live on knowing it was still out there in the world. Owning and being the master of what you create.

But, hey, if it can make someone else money, then it should be sold off so it can live, so he can never kill it off or be finally rid of the shadow of the monster.

So, again, still about the money.

Downloaded this game before, played once, removed.

Why all the hype around it?

I'm with you.

People are so brainwashed into thinking that fame is the ultimate and most superior state in life, it's rather sad actually; by that I mean that people who aspire to fame (and of course nearly 100% never achieve it) and/or simply value fame never realise how the simple act of valuing fame devalues their own (not famous) existence. Oh the horrors of being merely ordinary.

Are you seriously confusing a successful app developer with fame? I'd never even heard of this game before this story. Nor would anyone I know...he'd be quite able to live a normal life.

What's amazing is that he probably got a dozen offers for it to be bought, and he didn't sell it. He could've made a fortune off it. Still think it's strange he's taking it down.

It's not like people will now recognize him on the street and he won't have a quiet moment. He just needs a private email account.

He could make tonnes of money by releasing some game for $1.

He shows one iAd every time you restart... And you restart A LOT. It's like a printing press! It's the perfect storm of cute, simple, and addictive. Like a carnival game.

God I wish I had enough patience to learn programming. I get impatient using WYSIWYG HTML5 apps, even though I know Flash and HTML5.

Flappy Bird

Flappy bird.

May 24, 2013 - February 9, 2014

Unfortunately, it isn't April 1st :(
Download it while you can, IF THIS IS REAL...

life is too short to throw away an opportunity like what has just been handed to him. He may make small "indie" games, but this particular game will make him a millionaire and he can continue making games all he likes. Most people will kill for a situation like the one he's in. Clearly wherever he lives, they don't use currency and he has no need for money. Heck, if i'd made a viral i would sell out so hard and milk it for all the money i could.

Life is way too short and the world revolves around money.

i hope not

While I admire this guys incredible good fortune, it's a terrible game and he's probably embarrassed that his greatest success is something he's not even proud of.

He probably got a cease-and-desist from Nintendo for knocking off their graphics.

Announcing he's pulling it from the store is a good way to draw attention to it. At the same time cashing in on the massive ad revenue associated with it.

If he was truly overwhelmed with its success and wanted nothing to do with it, then he would sell it to another developer or even just give it away. He's just a dick if he wants to deprive people of something they like just because he "can't take it anymore."

Anyone who loves it probably has the app already.

He's either going to release another game, riding on the publicity of this one - or he or family has received kidnapping/death threats (yes, it happens) and doesn't want to deal with it.

Fame can sometimes bring the wrong kind of attention

To those who are crying out about Nintendo, he tweeted that he wasn't taking the game down due to legal reasons.

He could be lying; I already don't trust this guy. Either he's getting some serious grief from the media, or he's trying to get a bunch of people to download it before he has to remove it.

And? There are plenty of games that blatantly rip off of Nintendo. They're not likely to sue, they have bigger concerns. Also, they'd have to prove that people would have bought their games if only Flappy Bird wasn't there.

Where are the games that steal Nintendo's content and make money? This is the most lucrative one I've seen. Also, Nintendo does not have to prove that it hurts their sales. It's called copyright protection. Same reason you can't make a movie with Led Zeppelin music in it without paying royalties.
