Think Secret and all the other sites have gotten it wrong. I actually have it on good authority that the new flash ipod will be based on the boom box used in the breakdancing scene in Flashdance. The idea is to simultaneously gain access to the low end of the digital music player market, and at the same time capitalize on the mania for 1980s pop culture and music. It weighs about 15 pounds but with all 16 D batteries installed will play for 200 hours straight.

In addition to twin click wheels, it also has built in AM/FM, cassette and TuRbo BasS bass enhancement system. And no need for ear buds!

You heard it here first.

Hey man, not bad! I think the "miniPod" mockup you've made is going to be very, very similar to what Apple releases. It keeps the same squarish size, has a screen just slightly smaller than the Mini and has multiple buttons, like what Thinksecret is speculating.

Nice job. :)

Thanks dotnina! :)

No flash in the pan!

I've owned an iPod from day 1 of relase and knew then that this thing would be big- I never expected, however, just how big a success!

What I do know is if Apple release a 1gig flash iPod for $150 and a 2gig for $200 these things will be flying off the shelves and will make the sales figures of iPod mini seem insignificant! I remember reading the posts before the iPod mini was released and after when they announced the price most posters said IT"LL NEVER SELL and a year from then...well we all know what's happened!!

Not only have Apple opened up a new market for a cheaper iPod experience to those that can't afford or justify the cost of the other models BUT they will sell a shed load to those that are already iPod owners!

MARK MY WORDS- IF TRUE THIS iPod Micro/Flash WILL NOT FAIL

I will be 1st in line with my order as I was when I bought the original 5gig iPod which some bas**rd stole when I left it at work overnight! Still I got a new one to replace it!

I was being overly optimistic at the 149-199 price points for the 1-2GB iPod when I made my guess awhile ago.

But Apple generally has been shooting for a product in the premium end of the market -- so a 1-2GB iPod would make sense.

As far as the pricing, Apple has been shooting for the price point at or below similar drive only products on the market.

And the pricing for some of those 1-2GB flash drive was about 149-199.

Apple has also been locking up a significant portion of production for next generation drives every time they do a launch -- this gives them a lead in the market that takes people awhile to catch up.

Likely this wouldn't change, and Apple has a huge chunk of Samsung's 1-2GB Flash memory module production for the next year -- giving them a huge price advantage.

So the price points and flash capacity are possible, given where the price point are expected for this product in flash drive only form over the next 4-6 months.

And Apple has been quite forward looking at the last few iPod introductions, and not usually going by what is being sold today.

Whadya Know

Sounds to me that even if Thinksecret have let the mouse out o the biscuit tin, that Apple have still got you gessin'.

ipod flash or ipod micro or ipod whatever, no-one seems to know what it will look like or what it will be called or what size it will be or whether it will have all the usual ipod functions. Maybe, just maybe, Think secret have done apple a favour here.

Usually the average apple line product, benefits from its secrecy, but in this case maybe the ipod is so popular that the world will be hanging on Steve's keynote on the back of all these rumours. And just maybe, the world that usually doesn't listen to Steve's keynote will accidently hear about all the other great products Steve has in store for us all.

(Like the ibeercan - that automatically orders more beer when your current can is empty and plays the Jackknife Lee version of Vertigo while your waiting for it to arrive)

How much???

Also to add to my previous post- If people cannot afford $150-200 for an iPod micro/flash then what the hell are you on- benefits??!! Seriously that would equate to about £80-110 in the UK where I live and here the minimum wage is £4.85 an hour or if you like $8.70 at current exchange rates!

So are you telling me that you can't afford to work 16-22 hours at minimum wage for a 'gadget' that you'll use every day and won't be consigned to the back of a draw some months from now??

The iPod is the BEST gadget I have EVER purchased! I use it daily for my commute , It's played all day at work for my colleagues to listen to and that's a 20gig iPod that costs so much more than the rumoured flash device

Trust me if this device materialises at the rumoured price point you'll have plenty of time to save for one because you won't be able to get your hands on one for love nor money- Aplle won't be able to produce these things fast enough!

I did this years ago but it seems more relevant now:

And it still is cool looking.

Say, what about putting a touchpad/wheel like the mini has, only much smaller, in place of the four buttons and scroll wheel?

That would be very easy to use. Kewl!

...or maybe TS is screwing with Apple (and its lawyers) to trying to get the heat off it by pushing a rumor that will not happen...

"as proven by their predicting the so called Flash iPod that subsequently did not appear at Macworld 2005, I beseech you m'lud that the act of rumor mongering as to be simply an act of prediction and speculation and ask you to throw this case from the court!" :D

Why?

This makes no sense to me at all.

The more popular the iPod becomes the more options we will have which is great!

Actually, the iflash has voice-activated menu. Only 2 buttons on it, on & off. And it records, also.

Sorry, but I don't see a voice activated menu system on a device like this.

One problem would be background noise. When I used voice recognition on my 840av years ago, it was constantly trying to interpret my conversations with friends. Sometimes it would come up and say format the HD?

Can you imagine riding on a crowded train, or running on a noisy street, or working out in a gym with echos. Arg. Your iPod would be flipping through songs faster than you could tell it to stop.

While a good idea, there are just some applications where voice activation does not make sense. I think that it would be true for a device like this.

Will they turn off wireless internet so people won't even be able to provide text commentary?

Hope not.

And prevent people from using their iSights to show the Keynote to their iChat buddies! :D

Maybe someone could help me figure this out... If the iPod Micro does come out then will it most likely have a cable to plug into usb 2.0 or will it be able to plug right into the computer itself without a cable?? I could see it being the second seeing how they want to keep it cheap

Here are a couple mock-ups I made, one based on the regular ipod, and one based on the mini. I feel like a whole new layout that doesn't look anything like the current ipod is not what apple is going to go for. One of the coolest parts about the iPod is one hand operation, and they're going to do whatever they can to retain that. Anyways here's the pictures. :D

Nice but for $100 more you could can get a new mini with ten gigs (if the rumors are true) but i guess it will be good for gym/joggeres

edit- maybe its only a rumor of TS getting sues  ;)

Right now for $50 extra you can get 16 extra gigs!

.. and for only $1150 canadian more you can buy a iBook.

So What?

Some people are short sighted and don't realize that some people
a) cannot afford the extra $50
b) have no desire to spend the extra money and the 512KB ( or 1MB) is quite enough for them!!

Throw this into the mix: Engadget is reporting that Creative is launching a 1GB Zen Micro for $199.

Good, I was going to point this out. Frankly, $150 for 1GB player with an iPod-like user experience would be much too much to expect (or too much for too little money). I think the very best we can expect is $180 with a noticeably compromised user experience (in comparison to the mini and regular iPod).

However, if they can include the click-wheel in a package something like a mini version of the iPod mini and give it 1GB of storage for $180 then it will be just as big of a hit as the iPod mini. Same thing at $150 would be completely, totally insane (and I predict will not happen anytime soon).

The iPod has already become popular and cheap enough. The $249 ($229 if you're a student) for the iPod mini is low enough. I miss when it was a special and more exclusive type of club. Now every Tom, Dick & Harry on the street has those white earphones dangling from their heads. This is only going to worsen the problem. I don't want iPods becoming as popular and common CD Players or Walkmans. :(

First of all, drop the snob attitude. Apple isn't an elite club. If you want to feel superior to the others, grab a PC box and install Linux.

Second, iPod is already replacing "walkman" as the new generic term.

No offense, but no wheel = not an iPod. Why do you think competitors use a scrollpad instead of a scrollwheel? Apple has a patent on the scrollwheel! They CAN'T use the scrollwheel! (Apple won't let them)
