um so i did it. But now my home network won't work. It works on my iphone and ipad but i can't get it to work on my mbp even though it shows connected. I can't even change the proxies or anything when i go advanced anymore, its all locked out. HELP.

Click on the "lock" icon to unlock it?

I haven't figured out a quick way to switch back and forth from one network to another without a ton of steps. Have to play with it I guess.

I decided to use a USB Wireless N Card so that I could keep two different settings. 1 for DHCP and the other for the Handy Flashlight.

Switching TO the tether is as easy as choosing my new network in the airport menu bar. Switching back I do the same thing but I needed to renew DHCP lease as well. Very simple.

WAIT. iChat and everything works when i go back to my home network, but now none of my web browsers can connect to the internet? anyone have any insight?

Same here- my home network isn't working now. I'm sure I just messed up the settings somehow.

I can't get it to work either... Here's what I've tried so far...

Manually set IP on wireless card to 13.37.13.38 and gateway to 13.37.13.37.

I'm able to ping the iphone at the 13.37.13.37 IP

I've set the proxy settings in IE and Firefox to the required settings and it's not working.

Is this an elaborate scam?

No scam, it works perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro when booted into OS X, but when I load up Windows 7 via boot camp no dice. I've tried numerous things, gave WiFi card another address in the same subnet like several have already tried here and I'm able to ping the proxy address of 13.37.13.37 as well. Unable to ping anything else by either hostname or IP.

Tried assigning a gateway address of 13.37.13.1 or 13.37.13.37 and that doesn't offer any improvement. Tried adding a DNS address in the mix and that doesn't help either. I really haven't played around with Ad Hoc networks previously, so I don't know if we're all missing a step. For whatever reason under OS X it only requires the SOCKS proxy address and gets along fine without the WiFi card having an IP address.

works great

got everything to work, but certain protocols cannot connect (IM)... good stuff

Go back to System | Network | Advanced | Proxy and uncheck the SOCKS proxy.

It would probably be simplest to setup a new location under Network that is just for tethering. Setup your tethering network there with the SOCKS proxy checked. Then switch locations whenever you want to tether or not tether.

Seems to be pulled. If the developer releases an update to the app to remove this Easter egg because of Apple's request, and you update, you'll lose this ability to tether this way.

[Tin foil hat]

What if the developer is actually counting on this. Follow:

- developer puts known verbotten easter egg in simple flashlight app (that no one would pay anything for normally)
- word gets out, hordes rush out without thinking to purchase the app without thinking "before Apple pulls it"
- Apple disables downloads of the app, developer removes offending code and resubmits
- developer now has $$$ in their pocket from previous sales, no support required

[/Tin Foil Hat]

Of course this assume that Apple pays up.

Instructions posted for posterity

In case you don’t want to watch the video, the instructions are as follows:

Set up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network on your computer (network name and password requirement are not important).

Connect to the Wi-Fi network you just created on your iPhone through the Settings/Wi-Fi menu.
Tap on the blue arrow to the right of the selected Wi-Fi network, click Static in the IP Address menu and enter the following IP address and chuckle at its geek quotient: 13.37.13.37

Next, enter 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet Mask field.

Back out of the Settings menu to ensure these settings are saved (though hitting the Home button right away shouldn’t change them).

Go to your Mac or PC and change the network settings to use the SOCKS Proxy and enter 13.37.13.37 as the Socks Proxy Server address and 1337 as the port. On our Mac laptop, this is what the resulting screen looks like:

[Screenshot not available]

Be sure to apply/save these settings.

Go back to your iPhone and open the Handy Light app and tap the flashlight colors at the bottom in the following sequence: blue, yellow, red. Then tap the top right corner of the screen and the color should change to purple. Your iPhone is now capable of sharing its internet connection with the computer you set up.

Leave the app open and go to your computer and start browsing. As the video describes, we found that it took a few seconds for the connection to kick in but then it worked like a charm. Though many variables affect network speed tests, a quick test using Speedtest.net yielded 3.92 Mb/s down and 0.38 Mb/s up while tethered to our iPhone 4 through Handy Light.

Auto Tether?

Long time reader, first time poster.

Has anyone else seen tethering automatically added to their phone? My iPhone 4 came with tethering activated.... I have check my account and am not being charged...

Anyone else?

What country and carrier are you under?

Confirmed works on iPhone4 and Macbook Pro running latest software versions. He left out the step where you need to set a matching subnet mask on the laptop and a different ip address, but it works!

For $1 it was well worth this 'hack' of a tethering. Even if AT&T/Apple pull this, the guy deserves the money for being clever!

It didn't work for me until I changed the subnet mask on my iPhone to 255.255.0.0

Posting while tethering btw :)

How do you check to see if tethering is activated on an iPhone 4?

Have you remembered to turn the socks proxy back off?
