here is a simple one, i used this one, i might look complicated the first time but once youve got it working its easy, i stayed up till 4:30am getting it to work

1) Follow instructions in Appshopper website
2) Manually set the IP for your laptop's adapter to something in the 13.37.13.xx range (xx = any number 0-255 except 37) and set subnet mask to 255.0.0.0
3) ****DOWNLOAD SAFARI FOR WINDOWS****
4) Change the settings under preferences>advanced>Proxies (click change settings) then click on the LAN settings button. Uncheck automatically detect settings, check Use a proxy... and click advanced. Uncheck use same proxy server for all protocols and erase all the numbers on HTTP, secure & ftp. Enter 13.37.13.37 and port 1337 in the Socks line. Click ok
5) Browse the internet!

Now THAT worked. You rock!

A pity you Americans without official tethering access while sipping on my coffee on this commuter train while typing this message out on my laptop tethered to my iPhone in Canada.

A pity you live in Canada.

Excuse me whilst I assemble my 100% American all beef hot dog drizzled with oil and bullets.

Internet tethering works great on my iPhone through T-Mo Edge :D. Didn't have to follow 200 steps or didn't cost me $0.99 either :p

Not the fastest in the world but it still works if I would ever need it....

And a pity that YOU have to ride a train to work. I'll gladly take the comfort and luxury of driving my own vehicle and having that freedom.

Oh, and we, Americans, do have official tethering provided by AT&T for an extra cost. If we can obtain a free method that allows us to bypass AT&T, great! We're just as happy to save money, as much as YOU'RE happy saving money by riding on a train (as opposed to your own vehicle -- if you have one, that is).

amen brother.

Why are people happy about this? :confused: Isn't this just a proof of concept that the app store is no more secure than droids app store? Yet we crucified droid for letting a trojan in... :rolleyes:

If only Adobe did the same trick and released Flash as a Flashlight application. That would be helpful and a little bit ironic :D

Who knows how they look at this stuff. I doubt they look at the code, or their app reviewers are trained to look for hand crafted hacks within code.

any chance they will make another program like this?

Yea in about 2 years called Netshare 2.

No really I would bet that Apple will start to tighten down things for the approval process after letting the HandyLight app get through. Maybe if ATT would be nice and offer a true unlimited tethering then we would mind paying for it.

Ok so I skipped pages 15-25 in this thread since I was asleep, so I apologize up front if this has been mentioned.

This guy has 6 apps in the store..any chance any of the others have this hidden functionality?

I got the flashlight app so I'm not looking for me, but there were people that missed this and it'd be really funny if all of this guys apps did this. For instance the piano app could tether if you played a certain chord pattern(too bad there's no T chord..a, t, t, right top corner lol). Just curious and thought it'd be worth asking.

got this app to tether directly to an ipad without another PC to start adhoc.. very messy, here's how:

initial (one time) setup:

1)on the ipad you'll need to install from cydia: lighttpd, mywi, sbsettings, and the lighttpd sbsettings toggle.
2)on the ipad you'll need to create directory /var/log/lighttpd . (either ssh in and do it, or install netatalk as I did)
3)on the ipad create a file in /etc/www titled "socks.pac" containing the following 3 lines:

function FindProxyForURL(url, host) {
return "SOCKS 13.37.13.37:1337";
}

4)reboot the ipad and check sbsettings to ensure the toggle for lighttpd is green
5)on the iPad start MyWi, pick a SSID for the ad-hoc network and turn MyWI on.
6)on the iPhone, go into Settings, general, network, wifi, and pick the SSID you created. then click the blue arrow to go into advanced settings. choose "STATIC" for IP Address, and put "13.37.13.37" for IP and "255.255.255.0" for Subnet Mask. (back out of the settings and go back in to ensure those inputs saved!)
7)on the iPad, turn MyWi off and shut the app. go into settings, wifi, and pick the SSID you created (which is being sustained now by the iPhone). Take the blue arrow for advanced settings, choose "STATIC" for IP Address, and put "13.37.13.69" for IP and "255.255.255.0" for Subnet Mask. Also put HTTP Proxy to Auto and for the URL input "http://localhost/socks.pac". (back out of the settings and go back in to ensure those inputs saved!)
8)open HandyLight on the iPhone, hit "blue - yellow - red - tap upper right hand corner" to start tethering (handylight screen will go purple if you keyed in the correct sequence of colors and corner tapping)

Now ensure it works by using web browser on the iPad! (if not try to reboot the iphone, reconnect it to the ad-hoc network and restart handy light.. i had to do that the first time I got setup to this point, i'm thinking it was an ARP issue after the iPad changed from the self-assigned IP to the 13.x.x.x)

To start it up again in the future:
1) Open MyWI on the Ipad and start the AdHoc network
2) connect the iphone to this network in settings
3) shut off and close MyWI on the Ipad
4) connect the ipad to this network in settings
5) open HandyLight on the iPhone, hit "blue - yellow - red - tap upper right hand corner" to start tethering!

Regards,
Meef

THANK YOU! This works for me, iPhone 4-to-jailbroken iPad. But a few things still won't connect to the internet on my iPad with this AdHoc connection. My work email (Exchange) works, but my Gmail won't. Some apps (like the eBay one) says it's not on the network. But Safari works great!

I certainly hope someone posts something like this again since I missed this one. :mad: I will not consent to voluntarily being raped to the tune of an additional $20.00/mo on top of a capped...err crapped overpriced data plan by a craptastic carrier with a craptastic network for a service I use occasionally. A pox on Apple, and most especially ATT (Astronomically Tariffed Tethering)!

Where does it say he HAS to ride the train? I live in an urban area...and the vast majority of the time bus and train options are much faster than taking my car with all the gridlock. Less stress/road rage and I can perform other tasks while on the way to work or home.

Will my 99cent handylight app be deleted after i sync my iphone with itunes? will it delete when i update it?
