Seems like Apple expects most users to be in a cubicle within a clean room and no traveling. Some of you guys sound like you you need a Panasonic Toughbook or similar.

red lines appear under my screen. It started two weeks ago.
The uploaded photo does not show the stage light effect. Maybe this defect is caused by the flexgate too – i don´t know.
Thanks for posting the link to the petition again. It looks like it´s gaining some momentum. :)

Why can't a trillion dollar company design and manufacture a computer without hardware issues? Can they release a model that won't come with a serious design flaw within a couple of years of its release?
Aren't they ashamed for the quality of their products?
It sickens me. This ineptitude...is Apple trying to not get a higher percentage of computer users? Annoying.

Wanted to see a picture of a failed flex cable to see where the break occurs and came across this video that suggests as prevention to not open the display more than 90 degrees.

Wonder how Louis Rossman and other reputable independent repair shops would approach fixing this and how much less it would cost than the $600 Apple wants. Maybe splice another slightly longer flex cable on top or solder new one as replacement at least to get you up and running if perhaps you're a student that can't pocket the $600 Apple repair fee. Definitely document the issue with Apple first so you can get reimbursed or offered a long term fix when Apple is forced into a repair program by defect class action.

It doesn't seem Louis Rossman can fix it as well, because the cabling is integrated with the screen:

Jesus. Is Apple trying to shrink their customer base?? As well as they might work in practice, MacBooks have become massively-overpriced paperweights from 2016 on. There's absolutely NO reason why laptops this expensive should require pricey warranty coverage. On an iPhone? Sure, I could see that, but for a $1200+ laptop? When I see that, you can bet I'll be looking at every brand but Apple

So, no green light for MacBook Air 2017?

Did the MacBook Air never have the “good cables”??!

I misunderstood and answered incorrectly on my earlier post.

The 2017 macbook air is based on 2010 design, so you’re totally safe with one of those.
The Airs in general were very reliable. (up through the 2017 models)

The 2018/2019 Air? I would avoid those, since they have the same design flaw keyboard as the 2016-2018 macbook pros ... and very likely the badly designed screen cables.

Cool! Then I’m fine. I bought the old one from 2017.

Old Apple = Good Apple :)

Never used to buy it. Now it's mandatory. Yes, it adds cost, sometimes significant costs, but it is well worth it when things go to pot, which is increasingly frequent with these MBP's. Other options? Older machine (gently used or refurb) or Windows.

AppleCare is not a solution if you expect to keep your MacBook Pro more then 3 years.

I figured they'd have solved this problem for good by now

They had solved the problem and then they reintroduced it by adding in the cheaper (thinner) cable.

Apple cares about money, not computers. What's the point of making a thin laptop while it suffers from cooling performance and more? They are totally stupid.

Now, Apple is in big trouble since there is no reason to buy Mac computers due to poor performance. Why dont they care?

Did you buy it from apple refurb store or somewhere else? What kind of price did you get on it?

I bought it from a big online store here in Austria for 789 euros (new)

Great price, because ...

At the apple store in Austria it sells for 1099 Euros

Yea as long as its clean with no dings or whatever, thats great.

The really nice thing with those laptops, and 2015 and earlier macbook pros, is that you can upgrade the ssd very easily.
Theres 3 different vendors that sells 256 and 500gb ssd for pretty reasonable prices, so you have that option down the road.
P.S. I would avoid the OWC ones, and any nvme drives, and instead stick with the orginal model pci-e drive models.

I just noticed a strange thing in the European apple online store

The old MacBook Air 2017 is out of stock (shipping in 3-4 weeks)

I guess people have realized NEW isn’t always BETTER ...
[doublepost=1548270693][/doublepost]Oh, It’s the same in the US store

MacBook Air 2017 shipping time 3-4 weeks!!!!

They do have them on the apple refurb store.
I always buy apple refurb. They come as good as new, full packaging and warranty, for a nice price cut.

Here in Austria apple refurb is still more expensive than to buy NEW from third party sellers like Amazon...

Apple has a strange pricing policy in Europe ...

I'm trying to stay cool, but I'm getting kind of anxious about upgrading from my 2015 if I'm being honest. I usually buy second hand which usually doesn't mean there's much warranty left, so either the upgrade is going to be much more expensive or I'm going to take a bigger-than-usual risk.

Maybe if the right replacement programs are up and they fixed the issue.

Not possible because you need to replace the entire monitor part to fix that problem. The replacement price is $600. Also, there is no guarantee if it is not going to happen again after they fix it for you.

Fortunately for Apple, it's not their problem as they only offer 1 year of warranty, the shortest of all electronics manufacturers. Thanks to this, they can avoid suffering the consequences of their mistakes, so they have no incentive to fix it. Instead, the user gets to spend more money on buying a new computer, which will probably be another Apple computer.

If Apple had to pay for every single display that needs to be replaced because of this, they would probably at least design it in such a way that the cable can be replaced separately. People shouldn't have to pay for the mistakes of others.

2/3 of Apple’s business are iPhones and now Tim starts talking about apps, cloud services, health. Who knows where they are heading or even care much about Mac hardware.

Yea. That kinda my take. Seems like they dont really give two ***** about macs.
But thats why im eyeing this years mac pro/imac/macbook pro releases with a combination of excitement and dread.
This really is the year we find out for real if they’re going to continue to screw up the mac line or breath serious new life into it.
