Yea I got a great deal for mine. 13700k/32gb ddr5/1.5tb ssd with RTX 4080 for $2600 Cdn.
I paid 1,800 for my M4 Max Studio (base model) While it only has 512GB of internal storage, I supplemented that with an external drive.

Overall my choice for the Mac was more about macOS vs. Windows then the hardware but I was surprised when I was pricing out hardware that I was getting a better machine for less money.

My original intent was to buy a M4 Mini for 500 dollars, but the low core counts were enough of a motivation to opt for the M4 Pro, but that ran too hot and my games were just not playing well within Crossover. I then bit the bullet and returned the M4 Pro and got the studio, very happy with that choice

Unless you are a mouse and keyboard snob (or play Star Citizen) a PS5/Xbox Series X would most likely be a better buy for gaming, along with getting the minimum spec Mac you can live with.

This may also help contribute to the low mac user count in gaming - those folks just use a console and don't game on their mac.

Looks at the steam stats, and you see that only 2% of gamers are using a Mac - Linux has a higher percentage. I don't think there's any motivation for them to add in the cost overhead, and complexity
Yeah but a guy can dream, right? :) As it is, I am hopefully getting my desktop set up with a 5060Ti 16GB already. I just need the rest of it besides the GPU. I am using my M4 MacBook Air for most things.

I assume that is USD. As a base M4 max in Canada is $2700 lol.

But glad that choice worked out for you. With the way things are going, this may be my last pc but it should last me for quite awhile I’m hoping. God forbid one of my ram sticks kicks the bucket anytime soon lol

I definitely can agree with this. I do have an Xbox series x at home as well. I was off work on injury for 2 years and got a pc out of boredom or I probably would still just being using my Xbox for gaming lol. Though I do enjoy gaming on the pc more, it still doesn’t justify the cost trade off vs a modern console

The Acer Aspire 32 GB at Costco went back to $950 as the $350 discount is gone for now. I expect it to go to $550 the next round it's on sale. Instead, the $16 GB/1 TB version is $450 now.

I'm not getting the M4 Air to replace my M1 Pro. One of the issues with the MacBooks (and Surface models) is that they have very sturdy build quality but it translates into additional weight. There are Lunar Lake laptops that are in the low 2+ pounds while the Air is about 2.7 pounds and the MacBook Pro 14 is 3.5.

One of the problems I had with iCloud Notes is that Notes took a long time to update, both reading and writing. I switched to Microsoft Edge from Firefox and the update times are a ton faster. I still have the issue with email in wanting a better client and I suspect I will have to look at paid solutions here or find a fix to a few issues I have with Thunderbird.

Just checking in to say hi. Still rocking my custom PC as my main personal machine and no complaints. Windows machine for work is OK, I managed to convince work to send me a more powerful machine as I was finding 16GB was constantly maxed. The down side though is the new machine has 2 fans and is noticeably louder when the fans are running, which is often. So I'm stuck between sending the new machine back and giving up the extra power or sending the old machine back and living with the louder fans.

THAT DELL XPS LOOKS NI....
I need to stop, though I am getting very drianed and tired of the scare that
my Macs are ready to install Tahoe'd this morning and once a week.
time machine is useless so:"why don't ya time machine..." is not an advisable situation anymore.

think of a happy place away form computers......

I'm convinced I would be perfectly happy with Windows LTSC or macOS if I had to be, I simply prefer macOS for now.

When I get my setup dialed in on Windows, even using the same window management shortcuts, it's amazing how close I can get the experience to be to macOS.

Until you turn it on and it tells you it updated but don't worry, your files are where you left them. Now answer these questions so you can get back in there.

Seriously. MS is redoing the Run dialog box. THE RUN DIALOG BOX. WHY????

This is the crap that keeps me from returning my macbook and going all in with Windows. It's copilot all the way down. (Even disabled.)

I mean look at what they did to Notepad. I managed to shut most of it off in the settings, but seriously. Why?

Portable software and iCloud allow me to go back and forth - that and being able to run macOS on x86 if I need to. In general, I can survive the loss of any one of my machines as data is stored on my Mac Studio on external drives and backed up. If I lost the Studio, I could put the external drives on my iMac Pro and run from there or go buy an M4 Studio and restore the internal from backup or even from my other systems. My systems are generally set up with the same software so that I can run on Windows or macOS.

Yeah I can do that also, if I want. But if I am using Mac anyway, might as well choose the superior software…Ulysses over Scrivener, Omnifocus over To Do, Mail over Thunderbird, Reeder Classic over Fluent Reeder. Heck, at this point, I prefer Pages and Numbers over MS Office. So bad.

If I had it to do over again, I'd seriously consider the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura over the Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1. It does cost quite a bit more but it only weights 2 pounds vs 3 for the Yoga. It has a smaller battery and doesn't have the 2-in-1 functionality. The two things that I'd miss are the 4K screen and the X1 has two TB4 on the left and two USBA on the right which means only left-side charging. But I'd really love it weighing only two pounds. The weight and size are now a factor as I have medical equipment attached outside of my body for the next 3-4 months and it will probably take a few months to recover when it is removed. The Yoga is great at 3 pounds but 2 pounds would be even niceer as I throw my Yoga in my gym bag to use at the gym now and that's something I couldn't do with my MacBook Pro 16. Hopefully the M6 MacBook Pro 14 slims down to 3 pounds.

Console gaming is also facing cost problems. The hardware has stepped over the $500 mark. And services, which are, for the most part, required for online multiplayer, are creeping up quickly enough. Game Pass Ultimate has become borderline insane at $30/month.

And folks wonder why PS3 and PS4 (and/or retro emulation) remain popular
This behavior is what supremely annoys me about modern console gaming - most online/multiplayer is a fee; a subscription. Spend hundreds of dollars on a new system, $100s more on games and then you get the privilege of buying a subscription to play said game online? It was such a turn off for me, I never bought into PS or Xbox ecosystem in early 2Ks and the newest console I have is a Wii for MarioKart and a few other titles. It makes zero sense to me to pay out the nose for a system & games and then have the makers of said ecosystem look at you with a straight face and charge you even more for multiplayer? Thats like going to a restaurant, buying dinner, waiter walks your meals over to you and then they charge you extra to put it on your table lol. It still blows me away that thinking people pay for these services and at the costs they demand. There is a poignant reason Im a mouse and keyboard snob lol.

Even worse, a ton of the games now are going to disappear and/or refuse to launch when the license/IP gets pulled (sports games come to mind) and a bulk of the content itself is coming from the cloud.

It was a better world when games were disc based and complete, with only optional further updates being the online only part.

I had a look at video cards this morning, particularly the RTX 5050 and I saw prices from $220 to $300 for the 8 GB models. Anything with 16 GB of RAM was in the $400s. I am considering an RTX 5050 for a bit more smoothness in my PC and for better efficiency. I currently use integrated graphics and have a 1050 Ti and 1660 Ti available.

It appears that higher RAM and SSD prices mean lower sales which probably is why nVidia is cutting back on consumer GPU manufacturing.

The bundle we bought in the summer for $500 (9900X, MSI Tomahawk X870E, 32 GB G-Skill DDR5) is now $1,059.97. We also bought a Crucial 4 TB SSD for $219.99 and that is now $499. I can only hope that the AI bubble pops and collapses.

One very annoying Windows thing is notifications. macOS shows you them but it's not as obnoxious about making you close them if you want to do other stuff in the taskbar. So I turned them off at the Windows level and also turned them off in Thunderbird and my system is a lot easier to use. I have the bell ring when I get a new email but it doesn't interfere with other operations anymore and my system is quieter. I also don't get the ads from various products.

It's sold out in Cambridge but that's an insane price.
