One of the most annoying things about Panther Lake is that they are rolling it out in other countries but not in the United States. I think that there are Panther Lake laptops that you can order in the United States but they are not thin and light and they may take a while to get the order filled.
I googled that, and it seems for logistic reasons its easier for laptop makers to roll it out in europe and asia. then there's the issue of tariffs, so why not dedicate resources to customer bases where they're more likely to sell and its easier to get them into the customer's hands.

Correct. We are burdened greatly by the orange ape's whims up here. We are not in a war with anyone yet our gas prices are through the roof, and therefore all living expenses are up. We can't get new pc's with the good stuff because we import most electronics from the US based operations of the major players. etc. YAY. That's ok, we have moved supply chains from the US to other countries now, it's a slow process but will benefit us as a country moving forward.

I ran into these charts this morning and the charts look pretty impressive. This analysis is just for Cinebench so that's a limitation but it's overall fairly impressive. I don't believe that it's as close to Strix Point as the upper chart shows as I've heard complaints about Strix Point laptops that would indicate otherwise but it might be accurate for Cinebench.

Unfortunately the Panther Lake rollout is going like molasses so performance reviews are also really slow to come out.

One thing that I've seen lately is that higher RAM and storage prices are affecting Macs now in the form of pushing out delivery dates; not higher prices. It also seems to be affecting the used Mac marketplace with far fewer Macs for sale and prices not really dropping. I was planning on upgrading my M1 Max Studio to an M5 Max Studio and the expected launch is WWDC but we'll see whether or not they are delayed.

For reference: if you want to order an M4 Max Studio, the arrival is estimated for the end of April. If you want to order a Studio with 256 GB of RAM, the arrival is early September. I do not need to upgrade so I can just wait. But I really don't like where the market is going with more shortages, delays, and maybe higher prices to come.

I think it's quite likely that Apple is reserving the RAM for the upcoming M5 Max / Ultra, why use it now when they can charge way more for it in a few months is my thinking.

All of the M4 minis and Studios are sold out in the refurbished store too.

The launch is rumored at WWDC so that's a long time to have to keep stock as low as it is right now.

Used inventory on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are very thin in my area.

I'd love to get a M5 Ultra Studio, but the price point will be too painful for my budget. I'm very happy with my M4 Studio, but I know FOMO is real and will try to pull me in

You got a great price for yours and could probably resell it for what you paid for it right now.

I don't need to upgrade to M5 but it wouldn't be a bad time to do so.

I feel like since they discontinued the Mac Pro they now gonna make the studio price +++ especially the ultra.

Yeah, I can see that happening, and it may not even be due to that, but rather the higher prices of ram and ssds. Either way the new studios could be a significantly higher.

Yeah, I have a feeling with no alternative since no more Mac Pro, the price will get crazy although it does seem Ram prices are coming down slightly, but not quite to the consumer yet.

The reasons for a Mac Pro would be power and cooling. Apple has split out the CPU and GPU in the non-base models so it's possible that they will make those separate chips a lot more powerful and they may need more power and cooling and a small tower or even a large tower would make that easier and more quiet.

I put my Yoga on my trading desk using my portable 17.3 inch 4k monitor and it looks really nice. They sit in front of my regular monitors. It's possible that I could run my entire setup off the Yoga. The downside is that it would use up all of the ports for monitor connections. I've taken being able to get hardware whenever I want it for granted and the shortages we're seeing means that I have to be patient.

You could use a Thunderbolt dock and have all the ports you desire without issue. I have seen them with 4 DV ports.

I looked up the price of our son's gaming laptop from 2024. He paid $1,549 for it. They are selling new on Amazon from $1,899 to $2,099. His laptop came with 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD which is probably why they are more expensive today than two years ago.

The m4 minis and studios come and go on the refurb store

There are minis right now as I type.

I grabbed a 16/40 64GB 1TB studio a few weeks ago

Max Tech has a review comparing the M5 MacBook Pro 14 to the new Dell Panther Lake. The Dell wins on webcam and microphone. They put a 1440p webcam in which I think is really uncommon. Speakers were louder and I thought better but the video thought that there was better frequency separation on the MacBook Pro.

I'm still waiting to see more reviews and I'd love one that compares my software with the two platforms but I think that I'd have to do that comparison if I wanted to see it.

I am interested in the new XPS 14 as well. Great looking device, but like everything besides the arm systems they are gone ballistic on pricing here in Canada.

I have not looked at prices yet so I guess I'm prepared to be disappointed. I am looking for something lighter than three pounds so not the Dell XPS but it would be nice to see processor performance and battery life.

This is why I am settled on the new Asus A series. Great performance and super lightweight. All software I use is Arm compatible so I will take advantage of all the performance and battery life it offers.

Holy price increase batman. They listed the A16 here for 1899 on initial release. 2799.00 now. NOPE. Not doing it. I looked at the A14 with the X elite 20-100 processor and 32gb, and my current 1165g7 has better graphics performance. The X elite has better Processor performance to the tune of about 20 percent faster, but my chip has 56 percent better grpahics performance.

I guess I am keeping my old system here and maybe replace the motherboard if it really starts giving me trouble. I don't see anything right now that fits my needs. I would have gone to a 14 MBP but I would have to buy thousands of dollars worth of software I already own on windows. Staying put for sure!

Waiting for the AI bubble to burst, and until it does, buying a new system is becoming less and less likely for more and more people. I think in a twisted sort of way, this will aide apple regarding the Neo as folks will accept a lower spec'd computer for such a cheap price.

Personally, I'm happy to have taken the plunge and gotten the Mac Studio last year - its not like I had any clairvoyance in knowing the future, I was just lucky in making a decision in June of 2025 but for what seems once in my life I made the right decision at the right time. I usually make the right decision at the wrong time, or the wrong decision at the right time.
