Yep new iMac is really nice. Got mine today.

Keepin it simple alright haha. How is the change from 34" ultrawide to 24" and does the iPad with sidecar make up for it?

One thing I miss from my M1 Air was Touch ID, even though Bitwarden is quick to fill out login info, simply reaching for the physical key was nicer.

The 38” was really nice but honestly it’s not needed for what I do. I haven’t used sidecar in anger yet but it will come in usual I’m sure.

I could probably say the same, the majority of the time I have a video on half my screen unless I'm in a 3D program or game.

I still live at home but when I get my own place, depending on space I have the idea of a small desk behind the lounge and the clean look of an iMac would be a lot nicer in place and having the TV view just off to the side would eliminate the need for a bigger/second screen.

I downloaded Linux Mint. I like it and will see what I can do with it.

The minor downsides of Mint that I found were:
  • I had to download and install some drivers manually
  • I had to download and install some packages manually
  • Firefox requires you to use one of four search engines for revenue purposes on Linux Mint. I could probably install it myself to get around this.
Ubuntu takes care of everything for you and that's nice but it isn't that hard to add the other needed stuff if you're used to working on Linux.

After a day or two with macOS on KVM, these are the problems that I have:

  • Resolution limit is 1,600 x 1,200 or 1,980 x 1,080. I would like 2,560 x 1,440 to match my monitor.
  • Audio artifacts playing videos. I suspect that this is a PulseAudio buffering issue and I suspect that it isn't an issue on newer CPUs. I got around this by watching YouTube videos on the host instead of the guest.
  • Host/Guest cut and paste integration - this requires the addition of a package to get working.
  • I couldn't get the free version of Synergy to work due to package version incompatibilities. The free version of Synergy is four years old so that should be a surprise.
I changed the configuration of my big Windows system to run 3x4k + 1xQHD (had to add a GT 1030 to the system) and also added a new NVMe 2 TB drive while I had the system opened up. I have another 64 GB of RAM arriving next week so I'm going to try to do everything in this system. A possible upgrade would be to a 11700K which would give me considerably better single-core and about 25% increase in multicore.

I wish Apple would hurry up and ship their M1X systems as that would simplify things for me.

Just no way I could use a 24" screen, not even that is it? 23.5". Personal preference of course but just too small for me to be fully productive.

Which DE? I use Mint Xfce as one of my main daily drivers and absolutely love it. By far the most polished I've used yet, and everything just worked out of the box, including my sketchy unbranded USB wifi and bluetooth adapters.

I found Cinnamon to feel slowler and the experience didn't feel as polished. Xfce is very fast and light, and the UI isn't all too different from Windows (which I happen to like). There's nothing cutting-edge about it but everything I expect of a modern OS is there and feels nicely refined.

I use all 3 (Windows, macOS, and Mint Xfce) regularly and I have a hard time actually choosing which one I like most. For the first time, I think it's Linux, though the lack of availability for some software is a deal breaker for it to be my only boot.

I thought that but the retina resolution is 2,240 x 1,260. More than the LG UltraFine 24” 1920 x 1080 retina.

Depends on what you are doing I guess, but even that resolution does not make up for my 3440x1440 in terms of real estate, ability to have two windows side by side at an acceptable size and so on. If the replacement of the 27" comes along at least 32" then maybe. But not sure that will happen.

The Mac Mini, my choice of monitor and the MX Keys/MX Master 3 works so well for me. Given the iMac and MM and others, all have identical spec (right now) other than monitor it makes the decision so much easier.

And of course, when I want to use the PC, it's a simple button press on the monitor, keyboard and mouse. No need for completely separate systems. Really love this set-up to be honest.

I've usually got 5-6 apps running all the time on my 4k monitor (3840 x 2160). I usually keep the edges visible so it's easy to switch between them if I want to (or I use the Command + Tab).

I used to run 2 1080p monitors but last year I went 4k and did not look back. Yeah, native resolution means the text is a little small but I can always Command-+ most applications these days.

I've got an M1 MBP 13' - but I use it as a desktop mostly (to my 4k monitor).

I am truly jealous. Also of your desk setup. I imagine if I kept my desk 1/2 as clean as yours my blood pressure would be significantly less. That desk is just beautiful. Really enjoy your photos - thanks.

Nice setup @LiE_ . I am in the process of moving my home office to my sons old "pad". He had a big bedroom, hangout room and huge walk in closet in the house here. I am taking all that space over to run my business from now. My office will be clean and a great space to work. My current office is being turned into a music room with mid century modern furniture and turntable set up. I will also be hanging my guitars and amps there too. A nice chill zone for the wife and I.

Nice setup - what does this mean to your PC? Didn't you just finish that up last month?

I moved it on. Honestly I got really carried away building it and was using it as a distraction during lock down. As things started to ease here in the UK and normality resumed I found myself with no desire to game. Luckily due to the GPU shortages I was able to sell the entire PC at only a very small lose (the 3090 FE has such a strong value). Dell were gracious enough to take back the 38" Ultrawide for a full refund, so I didn't loose any money.

As mentioned above I do find working on Windows slightly better for my day job, but there are so many things I really value with Apple hardware. The iMac screen is basically perfect for me, nothing has come close. Even the 5K LG, had some downsides for me. Retina screens are truly a gamer changer for me, who looks at text all day.

Not my money nor do I care, but you've really lived up to your title  Correct me if I'm wrong, but within this thread you've built two PCs (more?), had two Mac Minis, two iMacs, an MBA and an iPad?

Hopefully you find peace and contentment with your current setup - I'm not knocking you, I sincerely mean that I hope this set up fulfills your needs.

Good luck

Oh yea I've been through a lot! Most of it was within returns periods, or bought using student discount meaning I don't loose much on resale.

PCs I'm fortunate to be a member of a forum where I can sell to decent buyers quite easily.

Let me just add that I'm just as guilty, going from a Lenovo to a Razer, to a custom built PC probably within the same span of time (more or less).

Would you trade up once the bigger more powerful iMacs release, or does this meet your needs?

Over the past year I went from a 2013 built desktop, iPad only, M1 Air, then back to a fresh desktop. While I was getting by with the iPad only setup, I found myself needing to take extra steps to get the same stuff done for more serious tasks. That lead me to the Air because I missed the desktop OS. While I enjoy MacOS, I felt like getting back into gaming and design with 3D software, so that alone put me back on Windows.

I'm a sucker for aesthetics, would love to try an iMac at some point, maybe next computer depending on what software I'm using then.

Ever think that some people just make more money than others and spend it on what they like? No "lie" needed. I don't know what either of you do, but not everyone works at the counter at Starbucks or Walmart. There are a few parent basement dwellers here as well. But, alot of us folks have good paying jobs, are self employed that make above average incomes, and spend on things we like.

This meets my needs really well so any extra power wouldn't really be utilised.

I don't think he meant it as a jab, he even said as much in his post.

I work as a technical lead and my wife owns a salon, so money isn't an issue.

I got that after I posted, but I get these comments alot from all sorts of places. Just putting it out there as a generalization.
