That seems more like a poor company policy if you only get two hours notice. But then, if you are on their time then not a lot you can do.
lol - Despite the Govt having policies set in Windows to only do update at certain times, still doesn't prevent the "Your computer is shutting down in 1 hour" or less updates now and then - even on their Windows Servers :p.

Well, not my experience, but I am sure it happens.

I think a lot of it depends on when your (read: my) work machine pings the update server. If it hits the server at say 2:00pm instead of 10:00am, then the window to restart would be shorter.

So things are going well fully out of Apple's walled garden. Even news of a new iMac hasn't made me second guess myself. My machine is performing exceptionally well and enables me to do the tasks I often do. Games run like a dream on the 3090 FE and paired with the Alienware AW3821DW it feels very special, a proper battle station.

Here is how it currently looks, although I have moved the PC under the desk now.

We'll see. I don't expect anything that will tempt me, that is unless we see something exceptional like a 32"+ iMac but that is unlikely. I am going to stick with PC for now although I fully expect to get a new Mac Mini to accompany the PC for various reasons that just make sense for me to do certain tasks via macOS.

Nice set up though, I have given up trying to redo my PC setup given the parts shortages.

Apple can release a MacBook that has 19 hour battery life,
nice screen resolution, a promise ala 2020 to run iOSX apps, portable and very shinny silver.
still many computer users wont flop or flip to their "ecomputer" system, even the ones whom jumped ship.
many computer manufacturers are designing laptops with the same or better specs with chip options and upgradable components such as ssd cards and the freedom to install the drivers and programs they want.

How are you liking the Fractal case?

I may opt for that in a few months, I have nothing again the TU150, its a nice case, but I think I can do better with an ATX motherboard. If I do take the plunge, I'd not put the case on the floor but keep it on the second desk that I currently use for my work laptop and the TU150

It's taken me a while to get to where I am, but I've stopped being all weird about having everything Apple because I convinced myself it was better. Having this PC has shown me that I was choosing a mac for all the wrong reasons. Having the ability to swap and change parts in my PC and maintain it myself over the years is fantastic.

I love this case, there isn't much to improve on really.

That is one chonky and power hungry gpu, I'm surprised it fits in that case. Maybe the FE isn't as large as the 3rd party cards?

Edit: For Context - We have a few machines with 3060s / 3070s in our lab. We also got a 3080 that we had to exchange because it wouldn't fit in any of our cases (couldn't put the side panel back on once power was attached).

I had to mount the AIO radiator to the top position to allow for extra clearance, but yes the FE is a touch shorter than some of the partner cards.

That's the 3090? There's a huge difference between that and the 3080 from EVGA we got - Least of all was the 3x PCI-E power connectors that the 3080 wanted. Heck, even the EVGA FTW3 3070 in my work machine requires 2.

That's a super clean setup you have. Bravo.

Yea it's 313mm and a 3 slot. It's very big. I think the photos don't do it justice.

Here it is next to the 3080.

To be fair, they are the very ones I am seeing going back. Including myself to be honest. Well, I say going back but personally speaking as a web developer I am part of very large groups both public/private where up to 2 years or so ago having a windows device was frowned upon.

All the issues with the MBP led to it being both acceptable and common to have a Windows laptop and discussions around WSL and other topics have been common.

But in the last few months, hundreds have purchased MBAs and MMs with the ultimate positive results being most are waiting for the next instalment. But safe to say they will all be back in and the Windows devices will be secondary.

The grass is always greener....

I've ordered an M1 Pro to check it out -- my current MacBook is a 2011 Air :D

Use Windows or my destop / gaming rig and also work. I have the option of either Windows or Mac for work so might as well check it out (ZBook Studio G7 is the high-powered Windows option by way of comparison)

In the tech roles where I work. MacOS is the favourite (70 / 30 split roughly), but like some of the comments here have mentioned, the gap in terms of capability has REALLY closed over recent years. WSL2 is _excellent_. External monitors just work on Windows. You have gestures and multiple Desktops now.

So... we'll see.... will keep the thread updated if anyone cares :)

Welcome to actually choosing something NOT on the marketing hype and little logo on the back. I tried to "like" macOS 3 times and all three ended with my unloading my crap for a huge loss.

I never did a complete build this time since I could not get anything video card related in stock. I bougt a Dell XPS workstation and I am adding the extras to that as I go along. But I love how fast that machine is.

So I flipped. Caved in and bought an iMac. I was always destined to be on an iMac. I enjoyed the distraction of building a PC once again, this time during lock down. It enabled me to play games with friends and family, but as usual I quickly get over gaming.

It’s true that in many ways Windows is better for the work I do, but my heart is set on Apple. My eyes need retina, my life needs the simplicity of the all Apple walled garden.

at the end we just want a computer we are conformable with that has less hassles.
Even tho in the morning we detest the exploitations of Chinese workers by computer companies.
and vow to use say linux forever,
but in the evening we are gung-ho on our laptops while enjoying our lives.

Never understood why people prioritize OS first. I let the apps dictate the OS 1st then personal OS preferences 2nd so that's usually Windows and Linux. Have used GS/OS on Apple IIgs and MacOS on Mac SE way back and recently MacOS on MBA M1 but still see very few or any attractions. Software availability is still limited, app context menus on the OS is still weird, having to use Finder to manually search and delete files across different folders to uninstall apps is horrifying, Apple trackpad is suppose to be the greatest thing since sliced bread but I can move the pointer with both meaty portions of my palm, subscription nagware is over the top, etc.

What colour did you go haha.

If I were able to get my hands on a PS5 before building my desktop, I prob would have swapped my M1 Air for the iMac, then again when a larger screen one released. Would be nice having a silent system again, but am very happy with my build.

I flip flopped on my 12 mini out of bordem of iOS. The start of April tried a S21, rage quit from the finger print scanner after a week and bought a 12 Pro..
