"I want a $2400 iPhone", said no one, ever.
I foresee professionals uses for this, for the kind of people who buy stuff with their company's money and not their own.
Opening a spreadsheet or even a PDF on an iPhone is still not ideal at best, moving it to an iPad is still painful, so I can see professionals who value their time and comfort a lot wanting this.

I'm very eager to watch the keynote and read the first hands-on reviews, using my $300 iPad.
Yeah, really, what's the point of this? The smaller iPhone Pro is plenty enough for me personally. The only reason I upgraded to a 17 Pro from my 15 Pro Max was because I couldn't stand the size. I don't miss it.

The iPad is better at being a bigger screened mobile device in every way. This is probably only a smidge more portable, for 4x the price. It'd also need to be nearly as thin as the iPhone Air, imo.

Dead on arrival. I still think fold phones are a gimmick and will go away by the next decade. Its a gimmick with zero use cases except maybe opening multiple apps at once.

An iPad mini and an iPhone cost less than this. Who is going to buy a fragile, hybrid, gimmick device with a plastic screen if you can buy two good devices.

This will be a nice and easy way for the IRS to identify who is either cheating on their taxes or is under-taxed.

If it comes in the right form factor it could be interesting. I prefer if the front was half-screen only, mostly for notifications, and if you want to use it for something else you have to open it up. To actually justify it being a foldable.

But it seems it's going to be too expensive anyway. And Apple will probably castrate it in its first version as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final device, but unless they offer me $1000 trade-in for my 16PM I'll be observing the reactions of others from the sidelines.

Apple's foldable iPhone could be priced at $2,399, according to an estimate shared by analyst Arthur Liao at Fubon Research. There have been a range of price estimates, from as low as $1,800 to as high as $2,500, and the latest estimate falls on the higher side.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said he expects the iPhone Fold to cost between $2,000 and $2,500, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects it to be somewhere around $2,000.

The foldable iPhone will be expensive because of the premium components that Apple plans to use. The display panel and hinge will push pricing toward the upper end of market expectations, Fubon Research suggests.

Demand for the device will depend on the price that Apple sets, but Fubon believes that Apple could sell around 5.4 million units in 2026. Global smartphone demand could fall during the year, and foldables will be the "only spotlight" in the 2026 smartphone market.

The report says that Apple is also working on camera upgrades for 2026, with the first variable aperture lens planned for the iPhone 18 Pro models. It doesn't sound like the iPhone Fold will get the variable aperture lens that Apple is developing, but rumors indicate it will have a dual-lens rear camera setup with Wide and Ultra Wide lenses along with two front cameras.

An absolutely absurd price for yet another brick.

Maybe the folding iPhone will get the spotlight next year, but if you want the best camera, you can spend a lot less on a Pro model and still end up with a significantly better camera. The Pro will be the new value option as opposed to the base this year being the value option. Everyone at Apple is probably crossing their fingers that they don’t get a repeat of the Air.

I'm also not entirely clear if there is another screen on the outside? If not, we'd have to open it up to do anything. But surely there must be. Which is all a bit nonsensical.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be a real pain to have to open it up every time you get a text, email or just want to check the time or take a picture. Adding an outside screen, however, adds costs and complexity; plus no matter how it is implmeneted, stripped down or full, there no doubts will be complaints.

sure, and it could also start at $1799 ...
And just remember that pretty much all "analysts" predicted price increases for the iPhone 17 models - and what happened?

But every "analyst" gotta say something, true or false ...
The iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro did get price bumps. Most people here thought the Air would be $899 to replace the Plus and yes, the iPhone Pro technically didn't get a bump because they just dropped the 128 GB model, but it will result in a large increase in the number of people buying the 256 GB model who would have been fine with a 128 GB model.

That’s where we are heading, but I wouldn’t expect that anytime soon. We could maybe see it by the end of the decade, or later.
Surely we could already have this? A small monitor and foldable bluetooth keyboard was mentioned, so Apple just needs to get better at offering a DEX-like experience on iPhones, but it no doubt Apple is terrified that they could loose their MacBook revenues if you could just plug your iPhone into a monitor and get a good Mac experience. Remember, the forthcoming MacBook Lite or whatever it's called will run MacOS on an A-series chip.

Some people want $100,000 cars. 🚗
I was just going to say the same thing. People spend $10,000 on a suit or dress. Heck you buy a pair of socks that go your feet for $500. Is there any thing that a $500 pair of socks can do that a $10 pair cannot? No! But people will spend money on what they like and if “they” think it makes them feel good.

There are lots of people in the world with lots of money and if they see a way this new iPhone Fold fits into their lives they will not hesitate to spend the money.

I will more than likely pass because I don’t need this in an iPhone. But for people who travel a lot and live on the road, I can certainly see how a foldable phone could definitely be an asset.

But I am excited to see what it looks like and try it out. I would think most people would at least be curious

Will this actually sell well enough though?

I think it will depend on the price and the feature set. It’s not going to sell more than the iPhone Pro but it could still do quite well.

Just remember the MacBook Air outsells the MBP by quite a significant margin but that doesn’t make the MBP a flop. More people buy a Mac mini than the Mac Studio, but again many people love the Mac Studio and find it to be excellent for their needs.

At this price they better add iPhone pro cameras including telephoto and maybe Apple pencil support to eat into the iPad market, or this will end like the Air
