Apple is constantly ragged on by haters about how they are always late and behind. This issue is just one example of why that is.

Apple is so desperate to create new product lines that they have stopped innovating on their current ones for a long time now.

We should have had 7 day battery phones by now or under display camera phones. These things have real world benefits. A folding phone is a gimmick and the poor sales from other brands is a proof of that.
Agree the foldable is a bit gimmicky but all manufacturers are attempting to collect a dollar from those eager to have the latest/greatest. As for the 7 day batter, not necessarily an Apple thing otherwise Samsung, Google, and all laptops would have the same said 7 day battery. This is about technology and our capabilities catching up to our expectations. If anything, complain that we make incremental improvements (1nm at a time) versus just going for a more sizable jump all at once. THAT, is where year by year we see all companies keeping us buying. Not just Apple.

Because only a small number of people really want this feature. Just like a touchable laptop. Lots out there, but not many really care about it (why we still have MB air and iPad as separate items). Just because you want it doesn't mean millions of others do as well (which might justify a legit effort). Must like the AVP, HoloLens, Vive, Quest, and a lot of others have been around. Apple just attempted to do it better at a time when it seems there is a better appetite for selling a substantial amount, and possibly shifting the industry. Business is business. You take your chances on those that appear to shake up the industry and make you a lot of money. Fold and flip are just niche markets that will dies off like some one-off model of car in your favorite line up. They appear, and vanish as the main form factor wins out time and time again.

A few days ago, I took an inherited freezer (AEG) that had been in use since the 1980s out of service

I hope they don’t make a foldable iPhone. The others I’ve seen don’t look good at all IMO. If you need more screen space, just go to your laptop or iPad.

I don't see many benefits on a smartphone, even to this day.
I can see this technology being useful in laptops and tablets, though.
I appreciate Apple waiting for the technology to be perfect.

Why would you hope for less options? You don’t have to buy a foldable phone but why not have the option there for the people who do not want to lug around a backpack everywhere they go just to have access to a larger screen?

Any engineer will tell you the moving parts are the parts that are likely to wear out and fail first... this is not a surprise at all.

Certain companies highlight the lack of moving parts in certain products.. passive cooling for longevity, redesigned strain relief for cables in display hinges... and then folding screens come along 😂

But moving parts can be replaced.

Just as an old rusted hinge on a barn door, you should be able to swap out a foldable screen for a new one. But unfortunately, that's not the Apple way.

hmm... I'm pretty sure people would stand in line again if Apple released this tomorrow:

First off, no, they wouldn't. The reason people don't stand in lines at the Apple Store anymore is that Apple has revamped their entire retail infrastructure to discourage that behavior. I'm sick of people trotting out this line about nobody waiting in line for the new iPhone like that's some kind of own, completely ignoring the fact that it's exactly what the company intended with the introduction of timed product reservations.

Second, even if we pretend like the reason the lines are shorter now is because of a "lack of innovation" or whatever, this is what you think would bring those crowds back? "It's the same phone you already have, but it folds in half to be twice as thick in your pocket"?

People say we don’t need a foldable iPhone. Back with the OG iPhone released was anyone asking for touch screens? Keyboard-less phones? App stores? No. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try to make it. I for one would would welcome a foldable iPhone. I love the concept of Samsungs note fold. I personally do a tremendous amount of email and work on my phone in the field. I’d love something a little larger when needed but not iPad large. It would help my transactions of buying and selling men like myself everyday.

Apple’s design conundrum is making phones that “do everything for everyone.”

The company needs to recognize that there is a large market for smaller phones that are simply phones, and that slip into your pocket. The iPhone 5 was the pinnacle of this design form. I use a MB or one of two iPads for everything non-phone related, and have despised the larger form factor since the iPhone 6.
If the market were profitable, Apple would make a phone for the market.

An iPhone that folds through the display is simply not needed and has way more downside v benefits.

If they ever do roll one out, can't wait to hear all the people that complain about their screen protectors being cracked :)

I think a 7" tiny-bezel iPhone/Tablet would be the way to go if people want even more portable screen size.

Thats only possible with a few select companies.... Most business laptops can be serviced and spare parts bought...

Recently Microsoft serface laptops have service manuals and you can buy certain spare parts including batteries and displays on their website... they even have videos of official teardown guidance. Thats awesome in my mind and I doubt we will ever see Apple do this.

The vast majority of companies don't make laptops with repair or replacement specifically in mind... Apple are notorious for this... because their designs put repairability far down the list of priorities... thats why a lot of the time they give you a replacement device rather than your original back when you go for service. The MacBook Retina devices were horrendous... using butterfly keyboards and usually replacing the entire top half including battery for a single broken key!

How come that Apple has so stringent quality requirements for their displays and, yet, my iPhone has burn-in issues after two years (never used as GPS navigator) when other phones with OLED screens I used in the past (even as GPS navigator for hours and hours) did not?
